In the '60s, hair got longer, skins got shorter, and pop music became a driving societal force. The space race was on, and The Beatles werein. This was the age of Flower Power and Black Power; the age of peace and protest. "Something's happening here, "sang rock group BuffaloSpringfield, "what it is ain 't exactly clear." However, one thing was clear: "These times, they were a' changin.' " Admidst this dynamicdecade, Archbishop Moeller High School is erected and accepted as a premier educational institution, and so begins our story...The '60s: Moeller's Genesis1960Fall ArchbishopMoeller HighSchool welcomesits first freshmanclass. Then freshman Barry Borman, Moeller'scurrent Director of Athletic Operations and honors biologyteacher, became one of the 196 first Crusaders to wa,these halls. He recalls many "slices of life, " tibits and pieces of his early Moeller e9 f f *Barry Borman ('64)remembers.a group it was great(to j^Jthe ^Bt cla^l becailR we were four-year— there never was a class ahead of us!what do I remember most? Well...Classes: I remember phys. ed. class. We didn't goto the gym because there wasn't a floor, so weplanted all the bushes. I think many of those bushesare still here today.Sports: The first year we didn't have any varsitysports, and the only sports we had were football andbasketball. Brother Eveslage, the principal, hiredGerry Faust to coach football that year, and BillDaley to coach basketball. All the football equipmentthe first year was donated by area colleges andhigh schools. There were lots of intramural sports, though. Thefirst year, the Dad's Club bought and installed all thebaskets in the gym.Traditions: We began our winning tradition that firstyear. A radio station, WSAI, had a contest for themost popular high school in Cincinnati. Studentswere invited to nominate their favorite school bysending in postcards. Of course, we were allfreshmen, but Brother Keys ran a campaign anywayto fill out the postcards and mail them in. Moellerwon the contest! No one had ever heard of usbefore then.W I N D O W S S U M M E R 2 0 0 0
Crusaders Name: Of course, we chose our currentnickname, the Crusaders, that year.We had a contest. A guy named EdFinke won the contest. His prize wasa $10 gift certificate to our bookstore.Social Activities: After basketballgames we had sock hopsin the gym.nke ('64)Teachers: Gerry Faust was in the army reserve.Periodically, he would come into class and show usmilitary maneuvers. His first year he taught math.Later he taught world history, then typing.Discipline: Discipline was tough. Bill Daley, thegym teacher, would paddle you if you got introuble. Father Middendorf had a little woodenbaseball bat he carried around, and if you got awrong answer, you would get whacked on thehead. You would get either a single, double, triple,or home run. Man, that would hurt! You gotwhacked for just about anything back then. One ofthe worst things you could do was not to have yourtie pulled up all the way.Facilities: The band room was in the basement, andeverytime it would rain, the band room wouldflood. It flooded several times that first year. In fact,on May 7, 1961, which was our school's DedicationDay, the band room flooded. I think it took themabout 20 years to fixthat problem. The cafeteria wasn'tfinished, so we ate lunchon the third floor hallway.Library: The library hadno books, so we held abook drive. Our job asstudents was to go doorto door around the neighborhood asking people ifthey had any books to donate.School's Funding: The school was funded by theArchbishop's Fund Drive, which also built LaSalle,McAuley, and funded improvements to Mt. NotreDame.Fund-Raising: Our first raffle was called a 50/50Drive. Once a week or so, we pulled out a winnerand recieved 50% of the proceeds. We also had theAd Drive, the Clothing Drive, the Marianist Drive, and Bishop's Relief Fund.Tuition: Tuition was $90 a year. The local parishcontribution was also $90. However, as tuition wentup, the parish contribution remained at $90. •"Moeller High School,as an intangible idea, bad its beginningsback in the fall of1958 when MonsignorEdward A.
