NRECA International, Ltd., a whollyowned subsidiary of the National Rural ElectricCooperative Association (NRECA), stands at the forefrontof rural electrification around the world. For more than 40 years, we haveprovided developing countries access to safe, reliableand affordable electricity, sharing lessons from the U.S. electriccooperative experience along the way. Wherever we design, constructand operate rural electric utilities, we also build local institutional capacity—including the training of personnel—to own and manage them.The NRECA International Foundation is the charitable armof NRECA and helps bring electricity and its inherent benefits to thepeople of rural areas in developing countries.The Foundation delivers electricity to developing countries by coordinatingand supporting co-op employees throughout the United States. Co-opsparticipate by sending employees who volunteer their skills, donating usedvehicles and electric equipment, and providing funding.When the recipients of their gifts have access to reliable electricity, familiesin developing countries become healthier, more productive and self-reliant.

volunteers bring change to those who need it mostOut of 15 Municipal-owned utilities that operate in Guatemala, theInternational Foundation is currently providing support to four, includingIxcan, and continues to look at ways to assist the other utilities. Togetherwith U.S. member co-ops, the Foundation is assisting in the following ways:• In 2005, Kandiyohi Power Cooperative in Minnesota and the Municipalityof Zacapa formed a sister co-op partnership. Kandiyohi is sharingknowledge and sending much-needed equipment so Zacapa cansucceed in providing safe and reliable electricity.• Six linemen from Singing River Electric Power Assn. in Mississippi helpedrepair and renovate a section of the distribution system in Jalapa.• Volunteers from Illinois Rural Electric Cooperative and Duck River ElectricMembership Corp. in Tennessee have worked alongside the linemen inGuastatoya. Not only did they help repair several kilometers of faulty line,but they also provided hands-on advice on safety issues.

The Power of ChangeIn 2008, volunteer linemen from the Georgia cooperatives went to the remote mountain regionof Ixcan in Guatemala. Ixcan’s infrastructure had been devastated by the decades-long civil warthat ravaged the country. When the war ended the local municipality established the MunicipalCompany for Rural Electrification, or EMRE as it is known in Spanish, to begin the process ofrestoring power to the region. EMRE made great progress over the years. However, they lackedthe resources to fully electrify the villages in its service area. A call for help went out. NRECAInternational Foundation and the Georgia cooperatives answered the call, and helped bringreliable electrical power to more villages in Ixcan.One year later, NRECA and the Georgia volunteers returnedto Ixcan. They saw that the power of change waseverywhere...and it was astounding.The villagers, who once suffered high crime rates, nowenjoyed increased safety simply because the streets werelit at night. Students were using computers to connectto far away places and learn about technology.Mother and infant mortality rates droppedsignificantly because local health clinicscould now provide critical care whennecessary. Businesses had affordableand reliable energy to boost servicesand production. And homes oncelit solely by candlelight were nowilluminated by electricity.But change didn’t just come to Ixcan.It came to the volunteer linemen, too.“This trip changed my perspective on life.It was overwhelming,” said volunteer linemanErik Hansek from Greystone Power Corporation.Curtis Baker of Cowetta-Fayette EMC summedup the power of change: “Every lineman oughtto do something like this once in his career.”
