NRECA International, Ltd., a whollyowned subsidiary of the National Rural ElectricCooperative Association (NRECA), stands at the forefrontof rural electrification around the world. For more than 40 years, we haveprovided developing countries access to safe, reliableand affordable electricity, sharing lessons from the U.S. electriccooperative experience along the way. Wherever we design, constructand operate rural electric utilities, we also build local institutional capacity—including the training of personnel—to own and manage them.The NRECA International Foundation is the charitable armof NRECA and helps bring electricity and its inherent benefits to thepeople of rural areas in developing countries.The Foundation delivers electricity to developing countries by coordinatingand supporting co-op employees throughout the United States. Co-opsparticipate by sending employees who volunteer their skills, donating usedvehicles and electric equipment, and providing funding.When the recipients of their gifts have access to reliable electricity, familiesin developing countries become healthier, more productive and self-reliant.
volunteers bring change to those who need it mostOut of 15 Municipal-owned utilities that operate in Guatemala, theInternational Foundation is currently providing support to four, includingIxcan, and continues to look at ways to assist the other utilities. Togetherwith U.S. member co-ops, the Foundation is assisting in the following ways:• In 2005, Kandiyohi Power Cooperative in Minnesota and the Municipalityof Zacapa formed a sister co-op partnership. Kandiyohi is sharingknowledge and sending much-needed equipment so Zacapa cansucceed in providing safe and reliable electricity.• Six linemen from Singing River Electric Power Assn. in Mississippi helpedrepair and renovate a section of the distribution system in Jalapa.• Volunteers from Illinois Rural Electric Cooperative and Duck River ElectricMembership Corp. in Tennessee have worked alongside the linemen inGuastatoya. Not only did they help repair several kilometers of faulty line,but they also provided hands-on advice on safety issues.
