WHITEFRIARS COLLEGE
IN FIDE
FROM THE PRINCIPAL
The tragic death of Paul Hewald (10C5) this week has left us shocked and
bewildered. We have been starkly reminded of the preciousness and fragility of
life. We have been so mindful of his parents, family and friends. We have felt
helpless, but have silently and privately mourned and prayed for Paul and his
family and friends and we’ve come together in prayer and support groups to seek
comfort and consolation in our loss. We have been conscious of the gift of life,
particularly as it flowers in children and young people. We have been drawn
together as families, as friends and as a school community in solidarity and
support. We have been reminded of what is really important in life. We have
given thanks for the life of Paul and have prayed in confident hope that he now
enjoys eternal peace with God.
In the midst of this tragedy, we have been supported by many messages and
expressions of support from other Catholic school communities. We have received
many offers of practical support from these same communities and have been
blessed with the assistance of Mrs Annette Tynan and Mr Michael McLinden,
Counselors from St Joseph’s College, Ferntree Gully, and Mt Lilydale College,
respectively. Along with our own Counselor/Psychologist, Mrs Anna Taranto, and
Chaplains, Fr Kierce and Br Sean, they have done a mighty job in supporting the
many students, staff and parents who have sought their assistance. We expect
that many will continue to need someone to talk things over with. There is no
script or time frame as to how we deal with shock and grief, but it is important
that we do attend to our feelings as and when they arise. A Counselor/Chaplain or
a trusted mentor/friend can be very helpful in this process, so apart from Parents
being sensitive and available to their sons’ needs themselves, encourage them
(and yourselves) to talk to someone appropriate if and when the need arises. Our
Pastoral Care teachers and Heads of House and, indeed, all our teachers, are other
important resources available to students to support them in their needs. Please
encourage your son to talk to someone if he is troubled and I thank all our staff for
the support they have been to students, to each other and to me throughout this
difficult time.
Last term finished on a high with the ACC Night of Excellence Concert, ACCent on
Music, at Hamer Hall. Both the guitar ensemble which played in the foyer
beforehand and the Choir which sang in the main Concert program, along with the
musicians who contributed to various Concert items, did a magnificent job.
Congratulations to them, to the staff who supported them and to all the ACC
schools on a high quality and very entertaining and enjoyable night of music.
On the last weekend of term, Whitefriars and Our Lady of Sion College students
combined in the production of a Senior Students Play, Noises Off. This was
humorous and entertaining and well supported over the two nights’ performance.
Congratulations to the students involved and to the production team, headed by
Ms Nadia Ballan.
Over the term break, many Year 12 students were around school taking advantage
of the offers of special support by many of their teachers. In the last two days of
the break and the first three days of this term, all VCE 3/4 students have been
involved in Trial Exams. I hope that students will make good use of the invaluable
feedback they receive from these Trial Exams and that it will help them to focus
their revision effectively in these remaining few weeks in which they finish school
and sit their final exams. We wish them well.
Our Intermediate and Senior Basketball Teams are both playing for State
Championships at Waverley Basketball Stadium this Friday. The Intermediate
team play Box Hill Senior Secondary College at 4pm and the Seniors are up
against Caulfield Grammar School at 8pm. Any support for the boys would be
much appreciated. We wish them well.
We also have a team of Senior Volleyballers competing, for the first time, in the
Victorian Schools Cup Tournament throughout this Friday afternoon/night and
Saturday. Good luck boys.
While Mr Neal Crossan continues to be on leave, Mr Greg Stewart will continue as
Acting Deputy Principal (Students) until further notice.
Students’ Corner
Captain’s Address
Hello again everyone,
We have now reached the business end of the year. For some of us there are only
a few more months before we join the long line of Old Collegians of Whitefriars. As
subjects begin to wrap up their coursework and focus on exams now is the perfect
time to get the most out of this year. As long as you have the determination and
dedication to succeed then you will get great results at the end of the year. One
man who managed to turn his life around in the span of a year was Chris
Gardener. After investing all his family’s savings in a fast money scheme he was
eventually left broke, homeless and with a young son to take care of. They
struggled with a homeless life initially spending nights on end sleeping on buses
and subway restrooms carrying around what remained of their former life. They
lined up for hours attempting to get a bed at the Glide Memorial Church on a daily
basis. Sometimes they succeeded, other times they were left out in the cold.
Despite this hardship, Chris attempted to provide a semblance of a family life for
his son under dire circumstances.
He accepted an unpaid internship course at a brokerage firm that promised
employment to only one of those who completed the course. The struggles he
faced everyday with homelessness and taking care of his son made him more
determined to complete this program and become the sole trainee the firm would
hire. Despite having no guarantee of a job afterwards and needing to compete
with some of the elite from various business schools, Chris Gardner never gave
up. His determination, dreams and his aspirations spurred him towards his goal.
He succeeded at getting the internship and was given a job at the broking firm.
Two years ago he sold his share of this company in a multi-million dollar deal. He
even got his amazing story made into the movie “The Pursuit of Happiness” starring
Will Smith.Chris’ remarkable story shows us that even when times are tough
and things aren’t working out the way you planned, if you want something and are
passionate in working towards it then you achieve it. No situation is so bad that it
cannot be turned around.
In keeping with the theme of how the response to a situation is important, I’d like
to share the story about a King in Africa who had a close friend with whom he had
grown up. The friend had a habit of looking at every situation that occurred in his
life positive or negative and remarking, "This is good!"
One day the King and his friend were out on a hunting expedition. The friend
would load and prepare the guns for the King. The friend had apparently done
something wrong in preparing one of the guns, for after taking the gun from his
friend, the King fired it and his thumb was blown off. Examining the situation the
friend remarked as usual, "This is good!" to which the King replied, "No, this is not
good!" and proceeded to send his friend to jail.
About a year later, the King was hunting in an area in which he should have
known not to hunt. Cannibals captured him and took them to their village. They
tied his hands, stacked some wood, set up a stake and bound him to that stake.
As they came to set fire to the wood, they noticed that he was missing a thumb.
Being superstitious, they never ate anyone who was less than whole. So untying
the King, they sent him on his way.
As he returned home, he was reminded of the event that had taken his thumb and
felt sorry for his treatment of his friend. He went immediately to the jail to speak
with his friend. "You were right", he said, "It was good that my thumb was blown
off." And he proceeded to tell the friend all that had happened. The King said "And
so I am very sorry for sending you to jail for so long. It was bad for me to do
this." "No," his friend replied, "this is good!" The King replied "What do you mean,
'this is good!' How could it be good that I sent my friend to jail for a year?" His
friend laughed and explained "If I had not been in jail, I would have been with
you, and I would have been eaten!”.
The story has a simple message that everything that happens, happens only for
good. When something that may be bad happens we focus on the negatives
however there may be benefits from it that will show themselves in time. Keeping
a positive and determined mind in this final part of the school year will help you
achieve your goals and get the most out of the time.
VCAL 2008
During the course of Terms 2 and 3 the
VCAL students were involved in an
extensive project at the former
St. Clare's Primary School site in Box
Hill, where they designed and
refurbished a courtyard area to be used
in conjunction with the adjacent youth
centre.
The project involved constructing a
gazebo and brick BBQ, reconstructing a
number of garden beds, building bench
seating and creating some
contemporary artwork for the
courtyard. The students were
responsible for ordering required
materials, working within a budget as
well as the design and construction
work required for the project.
After completion of the work the St.
Francis Xavier Parish provided
a morning tea for parishioners,
teachers and students and presented
certificates of appreciation to the
students.
Noises Off:
Senior Play
Last term senior students from
Whitefriars and Our Lady of Sion
Colleges performed Noises Off, a
story of a third-rate theatre troupe
as they tour a farce throughout the
country.
The cast worked tirelessly through three months of intensive rehearsals, perfecting
the timing of opening and closing doors and smashing windows to ensure a
successful performance.
A big thank you to Ms Nadia Ballan, the show’s Director, the make-up and stage
crew led by Zoe Wood and Alexandra Bleazby, the front of house personnel
organised by Ms Rachel Valentine and Mrs Sandra Kennedy. Thanks also to Steve
Hobbins, Trish Carr, Phillip van Nes, Les Marton and our Technical Director, Jacob
Battista, for all their work on their tremendous two metre high, seven door and
one window set that was able to rotate 180 o to reveal a “backstage” area.
The Play was a great success and was very well received by large audiences. We
look forward to future productions with Our Lady of Sion College.
ACCent on Music –
A Musical Success!
The inaugural Associated Catholic
Colleges Night Of Musical Excellence
was held on Wednesday, 17 September
at Hamer Hall. The concert was titled
ACCent on Music, and it truly was a
night of excellence. Three hundred and
fifty students from ACC affiliated
schools participated in the concert to
an appreciative and enthusiastic
audience. The night was expertly
compared by internationally renowned
conductor and strong school music
advocate, Mr Richard Gill.
The concept behind the event was put
forward to the ACC by Mr Robert Deller,
who strongly believes in the value of
involving the boys professional music
making. The act of bringing the concert
together took 8 months of careful
planning and preparation, additional
rehearsals, and combined workshops.
Each school that participated in the
concert presented a prepared item,
with all schools combining for massed
items to open and close the show. The
Whitefriars College Choir and Choral
Band, under the direction of Choral
Director, Darren Wicks, presented the
piece “He Lives In You” from the
Broadway production of the Lion
King. The performance was a great
success and very well received.
In addition to the choral piece,
Whitefriars College was represented in
the foyer items. Under the leadership of
Mr Simon Rowley, the Guitar Ensemble
played 5 pieces in the foyer prior to the
concert to a large and captivated
audience.
The Music Department would like to
thank the staff who volunteered to
supervise mealtimes and of course the
students who behaved maturely and
responsibly throughout the day’s
rehearsals which culminated into a
confident performance of the main
event. The opportunity to be involved
in such a concert was an inspirational
experience for all. We look forward to
future ACC music events.
Next Week
Sport Report
This week is just a short note to say the ACC Sport is underway and that coaches have completed a very difficult task of
selecting squads from a very talented pool – we are very grateful for having 2 Divisions at Year 7 and 8. All selected players
should have brought a letter home outlining the details of the season.
Good luck to everyone. In particular we look forward to tonight’s Victorian Championship Basketball Finals at Waverley where
both our Intermediate (4.00pm v. Box Hill SC) and Senior (8.00pm v. Caulfield Gr.) teams are striving for the State titles. Any
support would be fantastic and I’m sure you’ll see some great Basketball.
We also wish our Volleyball Squad well as we venture into the Victorian Schools Cup for the first time. Mr Heath McGregor and
Luke Renehan (Volleyball Captain) have done a great job initiating our involvement in this and preparing the Squad who will
play at Dandenong this afternoon and over the weekend.
Year 10 ACC Volleyball
Game day had arrived and the boys
had to play the first game of the
season against Emmanuel College in
Altona. After the drive to Altona the A
Division played a nail biting set by set
game that could have gone either way,
with both teams playing catch up at
various points throughout the first and
second set. In the third, our A team ran
away with the set 25-12. Notable
performances from Calvin Spencer and
his dynamite serve, and some solid
setting and spiking work from Christian
Serrao, Stefan Ionescu and Adam
Conti. Unfortunately despite their
efforts they, conceded defeat in the
fourth set to Emmanuel 3 sets to 1.
The B team having waited patiently for
their chance to step up started well
taking the first set 25-21. They then
dropped the second set 25-18 and
picked up our performance throughout
the following two sets to steal the win 3
sets to 1. Excellent performances from
the entire team throughout the match,
but noticeable contributions from
Andrew Daou with a fantastic serve and
some consistent work from the rest of
the boys coming together very well as
a team to take the well deserved win.
Great effort to the Year 10s under
some trying conditions and a credit to
the boys that showed good
sportsmanship despite some
contentious decisions at times. Training
times will be confirmed in the next
week. GO FRIARS!
