Rural MattersRachel Moore and the Young Farmers ClubThe local area provides a number of fineexamples of one of the countryside’sbest kept secrets. No, not a rare plantor animal but a youth organisationwhich I and my brother and sisters havebenefited hugely from being a memberof since the age of 10. I refer to ‘YoungFarmers’; the two local clubs are WorthValley and Aire Valley YFC.Young Farmers is open to anyone agedbetween 10 and 26. It is a Nationalorganisation of over 20,000 memberswhich provides a safe environment foryoung people from the countryside tomeet new people, learn new skills, andhave lots of fun. When I first joined Worth Valley YFCabout half of the forty or so memberswere from a farming background. Now,having a count up, there’s only about 10out of our 95 members. As the numbersof farms has declined dramatically sincethe club was formed almost 70 yearsago as a ‘calf club’ the content of it’smeetings has had to change to suita wider rural audience and yes, eventownies! Yes it’s true – you don’t have tobe a farmer, to be a Young Farmer. The weekly meetings now contain a widerange of activities including, sports, quizzes, crafts, trips out, and evenputting on dramas and pantomimes.Yet despite moving with the times thebackbone of the organisation remainsintact. The organisation is run by themembers for the members and pridesitself in producing vibrant young peoplewho can speak confidently in public anddemonstrate a sound knowledge oflivestock management, and the abilityto handle landrovers and tractors aswell as perfect a wide range of otherrural activities. Keeping these traditionsalive is proving to be successful withinthe two local clubs as the non-farmingbackground members find it all quiteintriguing.Practice of these skills comes in the formof our massive completions programme, the highlight of which, at a Yorkshirelevel is at the Yorkshire County Showheld at Nidderdale Show Ground on 6thJune. In addition to over 80 fascinatingcompetitions with members from the 47clubs from all over Yorkshire fighting itout for glory, our members organise agreat country show which is a windowinto the organisation for the public andfun day for all the family. Come and joinus for the day!Young Farmers also has an awesomesocial side with regular events attendedby over 600 members from across thecounty. Our clubs also raise money forcharities as well as promote causesthat our members are passionate about. There are no two finer examples of thisthan Worth Valley and Aire Valley YFCwho between them have raised over£20,000 for good causes in the past 4years and recently helped to promotelocal food networks at the BronteVintage Gathering. So if you are between 10 and 26 checkout www.worthvalley.org and comejoin us. Meet new people, learn newskills and most of all have fun. More thanthat if you find you’ve a flair for the moreagricultural side of the organisation youcould end up being part of the future ofBritish farming, equipped with the skillsand knowledge to be able to help us copewith an ever increasing demand for food!To advertise Say you saw call it Karen in the or Aire Liz on Valley 01535 Mag! 64222724

Top Tech Tips by Michelle Thompson of CloudFree ITWho’s that using MY network? And whatare they up to?When you first got broadband did you, like most people, rush to un-pack therouter, plug it in, insert the setup CD andlaunch yourself onto the ‘informationsuperhighway’ like you couldn’t wait tostart on the road trip of a lifetime acrossthe USA?Broadband is great, but if you’ve got awireless network did you stop to checkthat it’s good and secure first? If youdidn’t, be prepared for a shock...The popular ISP TalkTalk has warnedthat around 2 in 5 domestic wi-fi networkusers in the UK are now at risk of havingtheir connection hijacked! Most popular broadband routers arrivewith basic security pre-configured.The temptation is to ‘plug in and go’!Unfortunately the default or preconfiguredsettings can leave therouter vulnerable to intruders eager forsome free wi-fi access! Some routers, particularly those that can be bought inretail stores, arrive with NO SECURITYconfigured at all!!!As users upgrade to Wireless-N routerswith a much wider signal coveragearea, the problem can only get worse.Chances are if you can get a good signalin your shed at the bottom of the garden,so can anyone in the street! If a hijacker is using your wi-fi, youmay notice your connection is slowerthan usual, but if you’re only a light oroccasional broadband user you mightbe unaware that you’re sharing yourswith an intruder. This is one area where‘share and share alike’ is definitely a‘no-no’!To advertise Please call support Karen or local Liz on trade 01535 64222728On the external side of a broadbandconnection a unique IP address is usedto connect to the web which can be usedto track down wrong-doers. On the insideof your network there may be severalcomputers, games consoles and wi-ficonnected mobile phones (and yes, maybeeven a wi-fi thief in the street). Each devicegets an individual private IP address (e.g.192.168.x.x or 10.50.x.x), but they’re allsharing that single external connectionthough. What happens on your network, whether it happens within your own fourwalls or outside in the street, it is yourresponsibility.Aside from the obviously illegal internetactivities that regularly make the headlines, other less shocking activities are nowcoming under the careful scrutiny of thegovernment too.Illegal file-sharing is now being addressedby the new Digital Economy Act 2010,which becomes law on 12th June. Thisincludes a ‘three strikes’ rule which canresult in action against the broadbandbill payer such as warning letters, disconnection and even a £500 fine.So if you’re not 100% certain your networkis secured get some advice from one ofyour local IT support providers now, beforesomeone takes advantage and leavesYOU disconnected or with a hefty fine!Better check what those pesky kids aredownloading these days as well! For more info check out:-www.selfseo.com/story-13573.phpwww.microsoft.com/uk/protect/yourself/home/homewireless.mspxwww.microsoft.com/uk/smallbusiness/starting/technology-in-business/security/keep-wireless-networkssafe.mspxSay Say you you saw saw it in it in the the Worth Aire Valley Mag!29All Aspects of Electrical Work UndertakenDomestic, Commercial & IndustrialSecurity Systems Full/Part RewiresInspection & Testing PAT TestingNICEIC Approved contractor & Domestic installerdan@xpertelectrical.co.uk01535 642090 ● 07967 591688Homes will need to be rebuilt
