Leaving behindmortgages, mundane jobs, challenging relationships, public sector strikes, austerity measures, and the minutiaethat make up our lives in exchange for a seemingly stressfree life is understandably appealing. If you are feeling thepressure this season, retired psychotherapist Peter Wilkin’sarticle on page 4 might help you find the calm you desire. Finding CALM ByChristmas is coming, the geese are getting fatPlease put a penny in the old man’s hatIf you haven’t got a penny, a ha’penny will doIf you haven’t got a ha’penny, then God bless you! With the pressures of Christmasalready upon us, the chances of ushaving any spare change to toss intothe old man’s hat as this old nurseryrhyme suggests are highly unlikely. Ofcourse, financial pressure isn’t theonly stressor ushered in by the arrivalof the festive season. At this time ofyear family pressures aboundas parents, siblings and otherclose family members eitherbattle to host the Christmasday meal or desperately tryto avoid it. Ironically, what ismarketed as a joyous holidayoccasion may well turn out tobe the most stressful part ofthe whole year.Whatever form the stressors take, there are some simple, common-senseguidelines that really can take at leastsome of the stress out of Christmas.1 Don’t just say ‘No!’ Explain yourfinancial restraints in some detail tothose close to you and let them decidetheir priorities within the limits of yourbudget.2 Don’t try to please everyone – it’san impossible task! Again, explain anyfamily decisions you make with yourreasons for making them.Peter Wilkin3 If money is tight, compensate withyour Christmas card greetings. Makethe recipients feel special and not justsomeone who’s been ticked off the list. And perhaps make the cards yourselfwith the help of any available children.4 If you drink, identify some alcoholfreedays. Booze is incredibly expensiveand over-imbibing is possibly the maincause of family arguments.5 Find some ‘you’ time. Make surethere are high spots in your calendarfor you to enjoy: a peaceful walk in thecountry, time with a close friend, arelaxing massage or a soothing, candlelit soak in the bath.6 And perhaps most importantof all –Talk! Don’t let pressure build upto exploding point. As soon as you startto feel stressed seek out someone youcan trust and talk things through withthem. If you feel the need for a morestructured approach to stressreduction, look into the practice ofMindfulness, a scientifically provenform of meditation that helps peoplefocus on their thoughts and feelingswithout becoming overwhelmed bythem. Behind the scenes at the museumby Jenna Holmes Arts Officer Bronte Parsonage MuseumThere will be an air of anticipation at themuseum as you read this. An important ‘littlebook’ written by Charlotte Bronte in 1830,when she was fourteen years old, is going to besold at auction at Sotheby’s on 15 th December. The manuscript was previously untraced andunpublished, so it is one of the most excitingliterary finds in decades, and is one of six tinylittle books that the Bronte siblings created forBranwell’s set of toy soldiers to read. This onetells the story of a murderer who is driven tomadness after being haunted by his victims, and describes how ‘an immense fire’ burning inhis head causes his bed curtains to set alight, which is very like the famous scene in JaneEyre, when Rochester’s insane wife sets light tohis bed curtains. The manuscript is expected to reach£200,000 - £300,000 at auction, which is ahuge amount of money for us to find. Museumstaff have been busy writing applications tofunding bodies in the hope that we can securea grant to help, but we have also launched aTo advertise call us on 01535 64222716images reproduced by the permission of Sotheby’spublic appeal for donations. It would be so sad ifthe little book was lost to a private collector, andwe desperately hope to be able to bring it backto Haworth for the nation to enjoy.Despite the last Bronte (Patrick) dying in 1861,newly discovered belongings and writings bythis remarkable family are still coming to light, often scattered across the globe. Just lastyear, several items were donated back to themuseum from a family in Canada, and we alsobought some Bronte-made lace on Ebay (wewere able to verify that it was authentic!) whichjust goes to show the many ways in which itemsmake their way into the Museum’s collection.Next year our special exhibition will look atthe history of the Bronte Society’s collection, and will tell the story of murky book dealers, missing manuscripts and the efforts to trackdown special items and bring them home tothe Parsonage. It would be fantastic to displaythis new manuscript, one of the most importantBronte finds in years, as the crown jewel of theshow. We are all keeping our fingers crossed.

Help Us Put theTop on the BandstandWhen Haworth Cross Roads & Stanbury Parish Council wasformed it was identified that a major request by villagers wasfor the replacement of the BandstandThe original Bandstand was built around 1928 anddisappeared sometime during the early 1970’s. It was removedas unsafe due to neglect by the council of the time. We havetried to discover what became of the structure, with manyrumours circulating as to its whereabouts, but all storiesfollowed up proved to be unfounded. We have been told that itwas taken to the depot at Cliffe Castle in Keighley, where it wasbroken up and disposed of. Sad, but probably true.Haworth Park now proudly boasts a brand new base inreadiness for a new iron top to complete the performancespace for which the Friends of the Park are busy encouragingfundraising. This is to be a 21st century answer for amultipurpose outdoor venue for the Performing Arts, but willstill look like an Edwardian Bandstand as required by EnglishHeritage for our Grade 2 listed Park.It has been an interesting but quite difficult journey gettingthis far with a project that has the village firmly behind it.Sept 18,2011Haworth BandstandLaunch with a concertby The Haworth Band, directed by Tony Jaegar-Fozard.Many funding bodies have been approached but for onereason or another have not been able to award funds tocomplete the project. By far the biggest sticking point beingthat no one seems interested in funding buildings. Thebiggest disappointment was when the Heritage Lottery, afterencouraging us all the way with the application process refusedfunding saying we didn’t have enough Heritage. We still don’tunderstand that one. We have managed to raise enough insmaller amounts to build the base with thanks to various localfunding bodies & many donations from Villagers. The projectis being delivered by a partnership between the Friends ofthe Park and Bradford Council.
