Oh What a Lovely War!On the 18th & 19th of May, Haworth onceagain turned the clock back to the 1940’s.Record crowds turned out dressed inGrandma’s Sunday best with many hundredsof people in war time uniforms to enjoy twodays celebrating the 70th anniversary of theiconic Dambusters raids. The organisers hadworked long and hard to turn the Parsonagecar park into RAF Haworth, complete with afull size replica Spitfire and the magnificent36.7 litre Griffon aero engine that made theground shake each time it started up.A superb Dambusters exhibition, completewith a bouncing bomb, stalls and the ENSAtroupe went with a swing. Meanwhile, inCentral Park there were period vehicles, music, from the ENSA Troupe, dancing, more stalls plus theveterans beer tent.Main Street had afurther display ofperiod vehicles andwas used for paradesand marching bands.Naturally all our usualtraders were thereto provide shoppingopportunities, foodand drink.Saturday started wet,but despite chilly winds, visitors kept comingand by lunchtime the venues filled with happypeople. On Sunday, the skies cleared andrecord crowdsturned up to seethe show and enjoythe fly past by thelone Hurricane thatmade three excitingpasses over thevillage. Customer Service the way it ‘used to be’?by Michelle Thompson of Cloud FreeITPlease accept my humble apologies forthe topic of this month’s ‘Tech Tips’. It’s notabout anything techie! It’s about Service, witha hint of food and fashion! If you actually prefer the scripted ‘robotlike’customer service offered by unskilled, inexperienced, sullen ‘burger flippers’ orcompletely faceless ‘call centre drones’ overgood old fashioned service with a smile, provided by experienced and knowledgeablepeople, please turn the page, because there’s nothing for youhere! In tough economic times mostbusinesses are looking to savemoney wherever they can. Firstunder the axe is proper customerservice. In this techno-focused worldcontacting a customer serviceor support helpdesk has becomethe bane of our lives, but if you’re anythinglike me you’ll avoid it until you absolutely haveto. They don’t want your call at all, you know. They want to cut the number of support staffto the bare minimum so they can continueto offer the cheapest broadband or phoneservice for the next 10 minutes, whilst stillretaining a massive profit. They really don’t care if you switchsupplier at the earliest opportunity and nevergo back. There’s plenty more people queuingup to save a few quid on their car insurance/mobile phone/broadband/electricity/gas. Customer retention is not in theirbest interests. Long-term customers have‘expectations’ they want fulfilling. In my mid-teens I was fortunate to learncustomer services skills in a diverse rangeof settings. I Working in a large fast foodchain was utterly soul-destroying. ‘Customerservice’ meant ‘scripted everything’ , fromflipping the burgers on the beep and givingthe fries a jiggle when the buzzer went offto asking if the customer would ‘like friesTo advertise call Karen or Liz on 01535 64222720with that?’! It only took 6 weeks of repeatingmyself, before I had to get out and regrowmy brain.I worked in a proper café and tearoomin Harrogate after that, where, if you madethe effort to provide genuinely attentive, friendly and professional service, the rewardswere handsome indeed. It was much harderwork and longer hours, but by gosh it wasworth the aching feet, and I don’t meanjust financially. I learned thatinteracting with customers andturning them into regulars is theroute to success and happiness. In a restaurant I don’t wantmy meal plonked down in front ofme at the same time as having theword ‘Enjoy’ grunted by a creaturethat hasn’t even made any eyecontact. This is not good customerservice. The only tip they’ll get fromme is ‘Plant your potatoes later this year…’and I won’t return. In a supermarket we shouldn’t expectthe staff to advise on the best beer to usefor a beef in ale pie. If you want a top qualitysteak and possibly some advice on how tocook it as well, try a professional butcher. It’samazing what they know. If you want a wellcut and hardwearing suit forget ‘Primani’,and visit a proper tailor instead. It’s the same with technology. Cheapbroadband does not include friendly andhelpful support from properly trainedtechnicians, because that’s the bit that costs.A smile costs nothing, but it’s not reasonableto expect poor souls trapped in a sweatycall centre to sound happy when you’re their100th angry customer of the day.Why not switch to a supplier thatcharges just a little bit more? You’re morelikely to get experienced support technicianswith ‘a smile in their voice’ and better valuefor money service, so you’ll be happier as aresult too.The Grouse InnCLAIRVOYANTEVENINGTuesday 18th JuneInc. 2 Course Meal £18.9515% OFF YOURFOOD BILLEVERY MONDAY!2 Courses For £10.95Lighter Lunches MenuMon To Fri 12– 5pmSay you saw it in the Worth Valley Mag!21FATHERSDAYSunday 16th June2 Courses For £15.95YORKSHIRE TAPASNIGHTTuesday 11th June2 X 10oz rumps and abottle of wine just £30every ThursdayHarehills Lane, Oldfield, Near Oakworth, Keighley,West Yorkshire BD22 0RX Telephone: 01535 643073enquiries@thegrouse.co.ukwww.thegrouse.co.uk

Country Cooking & Foraging For FoodFor the promotion of Health & Wellbeing by Cath BromwichI love elderflower cordial. Elder has a strong place in Englishhistory, there are lots of traditions about it and many usesincluding hollowing out twigs to make whistles. This time of year the edible elderflowers begin to emerge and canbe used for a variety of dishes and later in the year the near blackberries can be baked in crumbles, but are a bit pippy so add a fewto apple crumble for best results.A traditional flavouring marriage is elderflower and gooseberry. You eat gooseberries, green and tart, with the elderflower head cooked in amongst the fruit. They are in seasontogether and are a delicious combination, in a puff pastry tart, crumble or just stewed.Other possible desserts using the flower head aroma includes elderflower sorbet or deepfrying the flower heads in a batter and dusting with sugar; Very Italian! I’ve also had avery tempting elderflower and vodka aperitif. If you do make elderflower cordial then for reasonably little effort you can halve the costof the shop bought variety. I think it tastes much better too. You can also bottle it for gifts. As soon as you see the beautiful creamy coloured flower heads on the bushes make thecordial, because if you leave it until the season is ending the flowers smell of cat wee! (Ihave experience of this!) Another reason to be ready is that you need to order citric acidfrom the pharmacy, as it is an aid to drug-taking they don’t keep large stocks.Get all your ingredients ready then takea walk where you have seen elder bushes.Take a plastic bag and some scissors, theusual foragers’ tools. You will find largeelder bushes in hedgerows as you walkalong a footpath. Their green leaves areoval and pointed with serrated edges andare about 5 cm long. Tiny flowers are onstalked umbrella sprays. Each umbrellaflower cluster or head can be anything upto 15 cm across. When a bush is in flowerit will be covered in them. Enjoy!Tip: Freeze cordial in plastic bottlesor as ice cubes for later in the year.Cath Bromwich, is a Silsden resident,a cookery teacher and forager with abackground in health promotion. Summer Learning LossDon’t Let your Child Fall Behind!Did you knowthat theschool year isbased on theagricultural cycle? Students traditionallyhad long summer holidays over harvesttime when they were expected to help outin the fields.
