Envisage • The ORFEO COLLECTIONOrfeo QuagliataOrfeo Quagliata is an industrial designer and founder of Phuze, a glass companylocated in Mexico City. His work explores color, light, geometric and organic formswith playful, interactive designs. Phuze’s OM and Phuzion collections offer innovationsin hand-blown crystal and fused glass jewelry, accessories, lighting, vessels andsculptural objects. In 2004, Orfeo’s work was featured in Metropolitan Home’s “Design100” issue and his designs continue to gain international recognition. Louis Vuittonheld an international design competition for young designers in 2005, where threehundred participants were chosen from around the world. Orfeo participated in ayear-long design review with Louis Vuitton’s design group, and finished second placein The Americas section of the competition.Born in San Francisco in 1972, Orfeo is the son of acclaimed Italian glass artistNarcissus Quagliata. He began working with glass at age 12 as an apprentice to hisfather and continued to work with him on myriad projects over the years, includingthe fabrication and installation of a crystal apex dome for the last architectural workof Michelangelo Buonarroti — the Basilica of Santa Maria degli Angeli e dei Martiriin Rome. Most recently, Orfeo fabricated parts of the 870 sq. meter dome “Wind, Fireand Time” in Kaohshiung, Taiwan. Currently Orfeo is sponsored by Swarovski Elementsto design and produce various custom pieces including five "Martini Shakers" for thelaunching of the movie, Sex and the City 2 in Mexico. He is also creating twenty oneof-a-kindperfume bottles for Givenchy.Early influences drawn from his father’s work and also his grandmother, Herta Jalkotzy,an award-winning jewelry designer in the Wiener Werkstätte (Vienna Workshop) −collective founded by Gustav Klimt. Orfeo’s designs follow an inherited tradition inglass and jewelry while articulating a bold, maverick style uniquely his own.Prior to college, Orfeo apprenticed under Catalonian glass artist José FernandezCastrillo where he learned cold-working techniques that have become a cornerstonein his designs. He later returned to San Francisco to study industrial and furnituredesign at California College of the Arts (CCA) earning a BFA with high distinctionin 1999. At CCA, Orfeo studied with the prominent furniture designer and architect,Chris Deam. He served as Deam’s design assistant for three years, on projects whichincluded work for Airstream and Herman-Miller. Orfeo has taught at both CCA andDale Chihuly’s Pilchuck Glass School in Washington State.
