Creating an Active WalesActive environmentStrategic aimTo develop and maintain a physical environment that makes it easierand safer for people to choose to be more physically active.Walking, cycling and active play form an important role in enabling people to meet theirrecommended levels of physical activity as part of everyday living. As there is a clearlink between the design of the environment and participation in these activities, it isimportant that the physical environment in Wales supports individuals to undertake regularphysical activity as part of everyday life. These key actions complement activity plannedunder the Welsh Assembly Government’s Walking and Cycling Action Plan publishedin February 2009.Our overall aim here is to support the development of and access to well designed andmaintained built environments and natural environments across both urban and ruralcommunities. There needs to be a specific focus on ensuring appropriately designedand maintained play areas, safe and attractive streets, pedestrian links and cyclepaths and ensuring access to green space such as parks, playing fields, woodlands,allotments and waterways.The provision of a network of well designedfacilities for leisure and recreation is likelyto be a challenge in the current economicclimate. New and innovative solutions willneed to be found, such as shared clubfacilities and opening up of school sites,following reviews of local facility provision.This will form a key action for the MinisterialAdvisory Group.Evidence indicates that the following factorscontribute to an environment that willencourage people to be more active:• proximity of local services to people;• streets designed to encourage physicalactivity;• attractive environments which areperceived to be safe;• traffic reduction and calming measures;• well designed, user friendly walking andcycling routes, which also consider theneeds of disabled people;28
Creating an Active Wales• cycle facilities such as racks showers and lockers;• accessibility and design/position of stairwells;• access to well designed and maintained green spaces such as parks;• access to a variety of environments for play.Priorities• Ensuring that the natural and built environment encourages peopleto be physically active, ensuring any redevelopments or new buildsare accessible, safe and designed to make physical activity anattractive option.• Developing an infrastructure to support travel by healthier and moresustainable modes, such as walking, cycling and public transport.• Increasing availability, access and use of high quality local greenspace, waterways and countryside.29
