VIMY RIDGE 63prising some 64 guns and howitzers, 106 trench mortars and 126 Maymachine-guns are now trophies of the <strong>Canadian</strong>s. 1917<strong>The</strong> training undergone during the winter has borne its fruit, andit is this training, coupled with the zeal and gallantry which are soconspicuous in all ranks of the Corps, that will continue to give resultsas potent and far reaching as those which began the capture of VimyRidge.With the advent of May the weather improved; therewere a few showers but for the most part the days werebright and warm. <strong>The</strong> ground was drying and altogetherboth living and working conditions were vastly improved.<strong>The</strong> <strong>Canadian</strong> Corps was still engaged under the FirstArmy in pressing back the enemy. <strong>The</strong> First andSecond Divisions were employed on May 3rd in thegeneral attack heretofore mentioned. <strong>The</strong> front wasapproximately three miles beyond the village of Vimyon the Mericourt-Acheville-Oppy line. <strong>The</strong> Battaliondid not take part in this attack, but replaced a battalionof the 7th Brigade at the Pylones, a part of the old frontline it had been in a month before. On the 6th they left May 6,these shelters for others on La Folie Ridge, where theycontinued to supply large working parties. While makingthis shift they were heavily shelled, and seven casualtiesresulted. Lieutenants T. Todd and G. V. Cooke werewounded, three men were killed and two wounded. Onthe 10th they relieved two Companies of the 1st C. M. R.of the 2nd C. M. R. in the line on theand one CompanyMericourt-Acheville front. On the first day in the line,Lieutenant H. C. Rounds was wounded.Lieutenant-Colonel H. D. L. Gordon, D. S. O., whoreorganized the Battalion after Sanctuary Wood, andunder whose leadership the unit distinguisheditself bothon the Somme and Vimy Ridge, left on May 16th to take<strong>com</strong>mand of the 8th Reserve Battalion in England.
