It was a remarkable achievement for one<strong>com</strong>pany and much of the credit was due to the splendidexample of leadership set by Major Coleman and Lieutenant Moore. <strong>The</strong> force was not strong enough to holdits gains if the enemy counter-attacked but help was onthe way; Lieutenant Moore, who was wounded after leading his Bombers so bravely, successfully reported thesituation at 11 p.m. to Colonel Gordon who had alreadysent &quot;C&quot;Company to help consolidate the newly-wonposition. Also, a <strong>com</strong>posite <strong>com</strong>pany under CaptainGale, after considerable difficulty made its way throughthe dark and unfamiliar ground laden with water, sandbags, bombs and ammunition to assist in consolidatingand help&quot;B&quot;Company in case of a counter attack.At daylight, contact aeroplanes passed over and thenew positions were signalled to them. During themorning information was received at Headquarters thatfurther operations were contemplated but when ordersarrived later in the day it was found that the BattalionBombers under Lieutenant Moore had already done allthat was expected. For his tireless, unflinching energyand splendid example of bravery, Lieutenant Moore wasre<strong>com</strong>mended for the Military Cross, but unfortunatelywas killed before he received it.Rumours of further attacks had filtered through thetrenches, but the Battalion did not move. It was subsequently learned that the Higher Command had decidedto strike again while the Prussians were disorganized.At 5 p.m. on the 16th a surprise attack by the 9th and7th Brigades was opened in an effort to take the ZollernRedoubt and extend the advantage to Zollern Trench onthe right. This famous redoubt was in front of the <strong>4th</strong>C. M. R. and as the men stood in their trenches under agentle rain they saw the troops of the 7th Brigade following the barrage over the gentle slope toward ZollernGraben.
