cial causes. Like many major historical foundations,<br />
Senckenberg’s lifework has carried on until today. “My<br />
foundation will produce good people, it will attract people<br />
from abroad and entice local residents to follow their<br />
good example, and I shall rejoice in a city that will be<br />
well served in medicis.”<br />
Johann Christian Senckenberg is case in point that such<br />
foundations were – and continue to be – essential for a<br />
functioning, vibrant urban society. The history of the<br />
City of Frankfurt is unimaginable without the manifold<br />
efforts of its countless benefactors. Few other cities have<br />
seen such active involvement from their citizens. Foundations<br />
based in Frankfurt have assets exceeding 5 billion<br />
euros and dividends of more than 130 million euros.<br />
Next to Hamburg, Frankfurt is the city with the most<br />
foundations, a fact that is attributable to the middle classes<br />
having made their fortune though trade in both cities.<br />
In Frankfurt, there are more than 160 foundations dedicated<br />
to science and research, more than 100 are<br />
committed in social fields, 60 are devoted to the promotion<br />
of culture, and 53 have made it their goal to foster<br />

education. The Hospital zum Heiligen Geist, Frankfurt’s<br />
oldest foundation, dates back to the year 1208. Other<br />
foundations like St. Katharinen- und Weissfrauenstift<br />
are themselves nearly 800 years old. The six major “public<br />
and charitable” foundations in Frankfurt - Allgemeiner<br />
Almosenkasten, Hospital zum Heiligen Geist, St. Katharinen-<br />
und Weissfrauenstift, Stiftung Taubstummenanstalt,<br />
Wiesenhüttenstift and Stiftung Waisenhaus – are<br />
legally independent but employees may come from the<br />
municipality. Long before state and city institutions assumed<br />
responsibility for such tasks, these foundations,<br />
which include Cronstett- und Hynspergische evangelische<br />
Stiftung established in 1753 and the Stiftung für Blinde<br />
und Sehbehinderte established in 1837, devoted themselves<br />
to helping the city’s poor, sick residents. “We are<br />
steeped in this history,” Roland Kaehlbrandt, Chairman<br />
of the Stiftung Polytechnische Gesellschaft, says in explaining<br />
Frankfurt’s plethora of foundations.<br />
As with Senckenberg, life experiences and circumstances<br />
often provided the incentive for benefactors to donate<br />
