Both CaulfieldGrammarians (top) and Beaumaris (second) wouldnot need to falter. Old Camberwell (fourth) werealready two games and lots of percentage backfrom AJAX. Maybe percentage would decide thefinal positions and AJAX did their chances no harmas they routed Old Geelong in this round. DavidFayman up front was again in top form with 8 goalsand Ari Lewski continued to lead the way withdelivery into the forward half. OG’s failed to makeany headway after a slow start and the 24.11 to 4.13was a resounding victory. Alex Thomson and TimHope-Johnstone valiant in defeat.Williamstown CYMS proved they were not out ofthe finals’ race with a terrific win over the previouslyun-defeated Werribee in Division 1. Willy startedwell and never allowed Werribee to take hold of thegame with a 10.11 to 8.8, hard fought victory. Jessehad been part of the VAFA U19 squad and hadcemented his place in the senior Rupertswoodteam.5 Years Ago – 2006In D2 Section Salesian Old Collegians emerged asreal premiership contenders after they disposedof Aquinas by 10 goals, 17.14 to 7.10. The loss byAquinas also set their chances of finals back butthey were not without the ability to re-ignite theirchallenge. There had been little between the twoteams for the first three quarters but Salesians’8 goals to nil in the final term told a tale. Best –Bobetic, Stevens, Hazell, Wilson, Morsello, Kelly(Salesian) and Olarenshaw, Whitehead, Lyng, Evans,J Box, Tyssen (Aquinas).St Mary’s won their first game for the season againstSwinburne, 12.10 to 12.7 in a game that seesawedthroughout the afternoon. Therry’s second half wasdisappointing in the circumstances. Best – Saunders(5), Mason (3), Walden, Bourke, S Langford-Jones,Jense (OH) and Mills, S Bannister (3), C Bannister,Castaldi, M Goodwin, Elliott (Therry).The C Section ‘battle of Mentone’ saw a tight tusslewith Old Mentonians defeating St Bedes 14.3 to 12.7in a tight, entertaining battle. Best - Acreman (6), BKuramoto, Dart, Flaskis, Solley, Costello (OM) and LWintle, Owen, Beasley, L’Huillier, Tomlinson (StB).Craig Brajtberg and Andrea Thwaites were the fieldumps.Matt McKellar played his 350 th game for HamptonRovers and had started with the Rovers in 1979in the Under 19’s. After winning several Best andFairest awards, “the kid” was Club Captain for threeseasons. Matthew was an outstanding example foryounger players to follow.Adam Acreman kicked his 1000 th goal for OldMentonians and this was an history makingachievement for Mentonians. Adam paid tributeto his family , his Club and to his opponents in anemotional speech after the game.20 Years Ago – 1991Old Ivanhoe thumped La Trobe University 17.20 to5.5 in D Section and went two games clear of fourthposition. The Hoes would have liked to have kickedstraighter but the percentage boosting win wasstill of great value.
