(The remarkably durableSteve McCarthy umpired his 600 th game last week;what a fantastic effort Macca – well done).30 Years Ago – 1981In C Section Hampton Rovers were a game clear inthird place following their 17 point win over MHSOBwho slipped out of the four. Best – Rowston, Wilson,Marshall (HR) and Jones, Flegeltaub, Delaney(MHSOB).Brunswick’s accuracy in F Section enabled themto inflict Banyule’s second only defeat for theseason, 15.5 to 13.13. Best – Quigley, Hutchison, BLewis (Brunswick) and Wilcox, Stevenson, Hitchins(Banyule).At Collegians Scott Wagstaff played his 100 th gamesand Mark Hibbins and Greg Parsons each recordedtheir 50 th .Leading goal kickers were A Jones (Marcellin) ASection 57, J Priestley (Old Brighton) B Section 55,Devere (Bulleen Temp) C Section 57, Ryan (St Bedes)D Section 58, S Scullin (North Brunswick) E Section62 and A Quaife (Bulleen United) F Section 51.40 Years Ago – 1971In A Section, and in very windy conditions,Ormond’s defeat of Caulfield Grammarians, 21.15to 18.13, saw the Grammarians lose their topfour place in a very even competition. Despiteleading goal kicker, John Butcher’s 5-goal haul forCaulfield, they did not have the multi goal scoringoptions that Ormond were able to present. It wasa high quality, skilful exhibition from both teams.Best – Morgan (4), Wood (3), Logan, Jackson, AlanGraham (4), Crumpton (Ormond) and Butcher (5),Fox, S McLaughlin, Williams, P McLaughlin, G Tootell(Caulfield Grammarians).In B Section, Old Carey’s accuracy kept them inthe game against Kew but Kew’s overall strengthenabled them to win by 8 points and stay in touchwith the top four. Best – Smith, Berry, Hayes, Nihill(6), Mullin, Stone (Kew) and Thomas, Birrell (3),Kingdom, Douglas, Chapman, Elliott (Old Carey).Kew’s Don Mullin played a great 150 th game.The amazingly durable Les Gordon, Power Housechampion and premiership player, turned out forhis 350 th Game and had not missed a match throughinjury since 1954! Multiple winner of best and fairestawards, Les was one of thegreats of ammo footy. John“Pincus” Penhale played his200 th game for ANZ Bankwith his personal highlight as leader of the 1969reserves; premiership side.50 Years Ago – 1961In A Section Old Melburnians scored an exciting 3point win against Collegians and were back on topof the ladder, one game ahead of Collegians andUniversity Blacks. Melburnians looked to have thegame won when they ran to a 16-point lead half waythrough the last quarter but Collegians had hit backstrongly to nearly steal the game. Final score 11.13to 11.10. Best – Reid, Graham, R Wilson, Knott (OM’s)and R Daff, G Hibbins, Levin, L Hibbins (Collegians).A brilliant half back line enabled CommonwealthBank to score a shock win over Power House in BSection 13.9 to 5.7. The result placed pressure onPower House who were now ahead of fifth placeonly on percentage. Best – Cleary, Neill, Board, BobMulligan (Comm Bank) and Brzezinski, Gordon,Bishop, Wheaton (PH).Nigel Kendall, Gary Harvey and Rex O’Brienall completed their 50th games for CaulfieldGrammarians. As well as being consistent playersfor Caulfield, all three were serving committeemembers.60 Years Ago – 1951Commonwealth Bank defeated Ormond to holdtheir top spot in A Section and the passionateComm Bank scribe declared – “and that was thebest-played, hardest-fought, most fair dinkumgame I’ve ever seen. The umpiring was perfect andjudging by the cheers from the fence, I think aboutthree thousand spectators all agreed”. No mentionof the Bankers’ best, however, Ormond agreed itwas a great, fast game and congratulated the Bank’sdefenders who repeated marked deep in the lastto ensure a win. Col Campbell, Ron McFarlane andLaurie Holman (3) were announced as the Monds’best three.A Section Captain were P Cox (Old Melburnians),D Arnold (Hampton Rovers), K Lewis (Collegians),J Thomas (Comm Bank), W Sparks (Ivanhoe), JSheehan (Ormond) but no details of the leaders forBrunswick, Uni Blacks, Old Scotch or Uni Blues!THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER 2011 23
