Employment Systems) regional partnership was
formulated out of a $3.8 million U.S. Department
of Labor grant to teach new and incumbent
workers the skills required in emerging
energy efficiency and renewable energy

NRVHBA Is Strengthening
Its Relationships with Area
Educational Entities
Virginia Tech
In a continuing alliance with the Building Construc-
tion department at Virginia Tech, the association
provided financial support for two of their students to
attend the International Business Show in Las Vegas.
In exchange, the students gathered information from
the seminars and booths at the show and provided
a report back to the membership. In April 2010,
NRVHBA toured Virgina Tech’s “Lumenhaus” Solar
Decathlon entry before it left campus for the competition
in Spain. Lumenhaus is smartphone ready and
responds to mobile device applications that allow
remote control of appliances and other electronic
devices inside the home.

Education Advisory Board
In secondary education, the association added
another $1000 scholarship to the existing one; these
scholarships support local high school seniors who
will pursue building trades post-graduation. Working
with the schools to find scholarship applicants has
led to a closer partnership overall with a local public
school system, one in which our members are invited
to contribute their ideas as to what skills are needed
in the workplace. The school system has a ready pool
of companies with which to place its job seekers, via a
seat on the MCPS CTE Advisory Board.
