What qualificationsdo I need to starton Advanced level courses?Taking an A-level course is relativelydemanding. To succeed, you will need tohave coped satisfactorily at GCSE level.Most students will take four differentsubjects in their first year of Advancedlevel study, or three and a GCSE resit inMathematics. For this reason, we havea minimum entry requirement of five fullGCSE passes at grade C, from at leastfour different subject areas. This mustinclude a grade C, or higher, in GCSEEnglish Language. Courses “equivalentto GCSE” will be accepted only at thecollege’s discretion. Grades at meritor higher will only be accepted. Onlyone course equivalent to GCSE will beincluded in the entry criteria. We preferGCSEs as they provide more appropriatepreparation for GCE AS and A-levelcourses. To progress onto Mathematicsor separate science (Biology, Chemistry,Physics) AS and A-levels, you must havea grade C or better at the higher level ofGCSE Mathematics, Additional Scienceor separate sciences as appropriate. Ifyou are predicted a grade C in GCSEScience and apply for AS Biology and/orAS Chemistry you may be asked to attenda summer school.How many subjectswill I be able to take?You will embark on four courses chosenfrom our list of A/AS level subjects. Therest of your programme will be made up oftutorial support, A/S General Studies andoptions from our wide range of enrichmentopportunities. In the second year, moststudents continue with four courses andcontinue the study of General Studies toA level. Other courses such as A/S levelCritical Thinking and the Extended ProjectQualification are also on offer.The pace of work is fast and you areexpected to commit yourself to a regularprogramme of private study, at home andat college when you have no timetabledlesson, devoting about sixteen hours aweek to this. Each department deliversa programme of subject specific supportand revision sessions throughout the yearfor you to attend. In addition , the studycentre provides more general support forall students who require it.
