(both guide for western)Harper was born on June first at 4:09 p.m. Shewas twenty inches long and weighed eightpounds five ounces, most of which is hair. Icould have sworn that Melissa had given birth to ourown little Yeti, but it turns out that she cries just like ahuman baby and hasn’t yet eaten any campers, so I’mconcluding that the mailman isn’t a Sasquatch…I’m having a difficult time deciding whether I’m aprouder papa or a prouder husband. Melissa has beensuch a trooper through all of this, I remain the luckiestguy in the world. In light of having lost baby Everett justover a year ago, the docs at the hospital had categorizedthis as a “high risk” pregnancy. This means that, despiteher commitment to natural childbirth, Melissa had toagree to an induction if the pregnancy went a weekoverdue (June 1). We were sure that the baby wouldcome on her own by then but May 31 came and wentand, despite our confidence that a natural birth was howthings were supposed to go for us, Melissa still hadn’tgone into labor. We started thinking about renegotiatingfor more time with the medical folks, but it was stressfulknowing that we were already on borrowed time in somerespects.Fate has a funny way of stepping in, though, andsure enough Melissa went into labor early the nextmorning…only hours before the docs could stick an ivin her. We checked into the hospital at 10:30 a.m. andhad Harper in our arms less than four hours later.Although helping her through labor and delivery wasone of the most humbling and overwhelming thingsI’ve ever been through, she somehow made it lookeasy. I’m sure it wasn’t…but don’t forget that, despiteher horrible taste in men, I’ve married a remarkablewoman.The last week has been surreal, sublime and overwhelmingall at once. It must sound like a horrible’80s love ballad to hear me say it, but looking into ourdaughter’s eyes feels like gazing into eternity somehow.There’s no feeling like it…suddenly the diaperchanging and insomnia are completely worth it.Travis Pearcepage 44grand canyon river guides
