Control and Measuring Systems for
AC/DC Testing
Types BC 5, CMS 22, CMS 23
1.52/3
General Basis AC/DC Control
HIGHVOLT supplies control and measuring systems for AC
test systems with HV test transformers or resonant circuits as
well as for DC test systems with the following characteristics:
Hardware and software are based on sophisticated worldwide
applied industrial standards. The hardware is based on programmable
logic controllers (PLC) of the Siemens type SI-
MATIC S7, on industrial personal computers (IPC) and on
connections between PLC components by PROFIBUS respectively
between PLC components and IPC by ETHER-
NET. PROFIBUS and ETHERNET connections are realized
by fibre optic links to avoid electro-magnetic interferences
completely. The software is based on Microsoft WINDOWS
XP and contains Microsoft OFFICE. It is divided into the system
related software (for internal control processes) and the
procedure-related software (for different HV test procedures).
Both, hardware and software are completed by components
respectively software packages well adapted to the purpose
of HV testing. Such hardware components are e.g.
- peak voltmeter,
- breakdown detection unit,
- fast switch-off device,
- trigger devices.
Functions related to safety of personnel of the test field, e.g.
emergency-stop or door end contacts of safety loop, are realized
by direct action via a conventional lead to the circuit
breaker of the switching cabinet. Computer-based measuring
devices, e.g. for partial discharge or dissipation factor
measurement, are connected via ETHERNET or RS 232
realized by fibre optic links.
Software packages are available for
- PLC control of SIMATIC S7,
- IPC control under WINDOWS by the packages WGMS
(see Data Sheet 1.55),
- standard test procedures (e.g. IEC 60060-1) and customer
related test procedures by templates and
- remote diagnostics and access.
Different parts of the software (including software for control
and measurement) are connected via DCOM interfaces. Interfaces
to outside networks, this means to a local area network
(LAN) or to wide area networks (WAN, e.g. Internet), are
realized by ETHERNET, too. The LAN connection enables
the application of external components, e.g. printers or work
stations, and the data exchange between test field and network.
The WAN connection enables the data exchange between the
test fields of different factories of one group or the connection
to the HIGHVOLT Service Center for support, software updates
or trouble shooting.
Based on these characteristics HIGHVOLT supplies the following
three modular versions of control and measuring systems
for AC/DC voltage test systems.
Type BC 5 …
The basic version BC 5… (Fig. 1) is based on one universal
operator device, type BG 5, and SIMATIC software different
for transformer circuits (system designation BC 5 T), resonant
circuits (BC 5 R) and DC generators (BG 5 G). It is related to
conventional test equipment control with completely separate
extern measuring devices (PD, tanδ, current, etc.). Only the
peak voltmeter type MU 18 is connected to the SIMATIC
control by PROFIBUS for comparison of preselected and
actual voltage values.
Type designation for basic controls:
BC 5 T is the basic AC control for a HV test transformer (on
request including compensation)
BC 5 R is the basic AC control for a HV resonant circuit
BC 5 G is the basic DC control for a HVDC generator
The basic AC/DC control, type BC 5 T (or R or G) comprises
the following components:
Components Type Data Sheet
 Plug-in unit operator device,
including PROFIBUS connection
 Desk-top casing
(see also options)
Fig. 1: Basic version of AC/DC control, type BC 5 …
The computer version CMS 22… (Fig. 2) is based on the
direct connection between an industrial personal computer
(IPC) for the operator and the programmable logic controller
(SIMATIC) in the switching cubicle. A small plug-in unit (BG 6)
contains the control power switch and the emergency stop.
The peak voltmeter MU 18 is connected via PROFIBUS. That
hardware is identical for all AC and DC test systems. The IPC
and SIMATIC software packages WGMS 22 are different for
transformer circuits (T), resonant circuits (R), HV module
systems (M) and DC generators (G). As an option, the more
comfortable software package WGMS 23 instead of … 22 can
be applied.
Very often PD or tan delta measurement is connected with
AC/DC testing. Then computerized measuring devices are
connected via ETHERNET or RS 232 to the IPC. Further
options are related to the remote diagnostic and control module
RDA 23 which enables the connection to local computer
networks as well as to the INTERNET (e.g. for connection to
the HIGHVOLT Service Center).
Advanced Computer AC/DC Control
Type CMS 23...
The advanced computer control CMS 23 … (Fig. 3) is characterized
by the combination of the computer control CMS 22
with a basic control BG 5 for full redundancy, by an extended
software package WGMS 23 for adaptation to the related test
generator (T for transformers, R for resonant circuits, V for
frequency-tuned resonant circuits, M for HV module systems
and G for HVDC generators) and by the remote diagnostic
and access module (RDA 23). The IPC is connected to the
SIMATIC PLC via ETHERNET (optical link), whereas the
connection of the PLC to the operator device (BG 5) and to
the peak voltmeter (MU 18) is realized by the optical PROFI-
BUS. The software WGMS 23 contains automatic test procedures,
test data evaluation and test report printing. The remote
diagnostic and access module (RDA 23) for technical
support, software updates and trouble shooting is a standard
feature. The RDA 23 module includes the interface to the
local area network (LAN) of the user. The connection to the
wide area network (WAN, Internet) should be realized by the
user according to the local conditions. This enables the connection
to the HIGHVOLT Service Center (Fig. 3).
