CITIZENSHIPCitizenship Basics2-Day Workshop / 10 <strong>Professional</strong> <strong>Development</strong> HoursNew citizenship teachers, tutors, and classroom aides will benefitfrom this two-day workshop. Day One will cover the steps tocitizenship in order to help participants prepare their students topass the USCIS citizenship interview. Day one also covers theCivics, Reading, and Writing Tests that take place during thecitizenship interview as well as specific teaching strategies foreach test. Day Two introduces the Application for Naturalization,the ten-page legal document that students must discuss duringtheir citizenship interview. FAMILYLITERACYParents as Educational Partners (PEP):A School-Related Curriculum for Language Minority Parents2-Day Workshop / 10 <strong>Professional</strong> <strong>Development</strong> HoursMany adult ESL learners have children attending public schools.Research shows that children at all grade levels do better academicwork and have more positive school attitudes, higher aspirations,and other positive behaviors if their parents are knowledgeableabout and involved in their education. Language and culturalbarriers, however, make English Language Learner (ELL) parentsparticularly vulnerable to being left out of their children’seducation.Instructors of adult ESL can integrate school-related informationinto their ESL classes by using Parents as Educational Partners(PEP): A School-Related Curriculum for Language MinorityParents. This curriculum helps ELL parents feel comfortableparticipating in their children’s education and assists them inovercoming language barriers. <strong>The</strong> curriculum consists of seveninstructional modules: <strong>The</strong> U.S. School System; School Personneland the School Day; School Procedures; Parent-TeacherConferences; Report Cards and Curricula; Study Skills andHomework; and School Health Procedures.
