APPENDIX 1Appendix 1Types of cost evaluationsThe major types of cost evaluations reviewed in this document are as follows:Cost-Benefit Analysis (CBA): provides information on both the costs ofthe intervention and the benefits, expressed in monetary terms. Someof the CBA studies provide information only on the net savings,without providing details on the levels of costs and benefits. OtherCBA-type studies provide information only on the monetary benefits orsavings from an intervention without calculating the cost. A subset ofthese studies uses willingness-to-pay methods to calculate individuals'and society's aversion to interpersonal violence.Cost-Effectiveness Analysis (CEA): provides information on the cost ofthe intervention and its effectiveness, where effectiveness is notexpressed in monetary terms but rather by a defined metric - generallythe cost per life saved in the case of interventions to reduceinterpersonal violence. CEA studies are in principle directlycomparable if they use the same metric and the same methodologies incalculating costs.Cost-Utility Analysis (CUA): similar to CEA, but the metric in thedenominator is adjusted for quality of life or utility.
