Box 1986Indianapolis, Indiana 46206-1986(800) 668-8016In 1961, the Christian Church Foundation was planted, the idea of a handful of visionaryleaders who believed Disciples would be well-served if they had their own foundation toencourage planned giving as an additional form of stewardship.In 51 years, that seed has grown – nurtured by faithful Disciples – to where it nowstands as a sturdy tree, providing for the church through planned gifts and prudent fundmanagement. 2012 was a tremendous year for your Foundation. With $8.2 million innew permanent fund gifts, $29.4 million in new deposits and strong investment returns,the Foundation ended the year by crossing the $500 million mark in assets for the firsttime in our history.These numbers are important because of the Foundation’s role as a steward. Moreimportantly, however, these numbers convey the faith individual Disciples have for thefuture of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) as they provide the resources toenhance the witness of congregations, regions, general ministries and other institutionsand church ministries. These gifts are expressions of the love and trust Disciples havefor the ministries of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ). These legacy gifts are thetangible expressions of the donors’ faith witness and commitment to the Gospel.The Foundation in 2012 distributed $7.2 million according to the donors’ instructions, a4.2% increase from 2011. Disciples ministries and institutions who have investmentswith the Foundation also used the income from their investments to further theirindividual witnesses.The Foundation participates in the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) mission to be amovement for wholeness in a fragmented world by:o Providing donors an opportunity to match their resources with their passions.Through planned giving opportunities, including life-income gifts, donor-advisedfunds and permanent funds, donors can direct their legacy gifts to Disciplesministries and other charities. Congregations also can extend their ministrybeyond their lifetimes by converting their assets into permanent funds that benefitongoing and future ministries. These legacy congregations, though their doorsmay have closed, are providing ongoing witness and service.o During 2012, $8.2 million – the largest amount since the start of the 21 stCentury -- was given for permanent funds.• $5.0 million was given for permanent funds by individuals asoutright gifts or from bequest and estate gifts. These dollars willsupport Disciples ministries into the future.

• $3.2 million was given by legacy congregations as a way tocontinue their witness. These congregations, like individual donors,advise future distributions to the ministries they choose to support.• Individuals contributed another $1.0 million to fund gifts that willprovide life-income payments to individuals with the charitableremainder going to ministry.o Undergirding the work of the church, in its varied expressions, throughpermanent fund distributions that keep the Disciples of Christ witness vital.Endowment funds, provided by individuals through bequests and planned giftsand by legacy congregations, extend the witness of individual ministries andcauses beyond their annual stewardship efforts. Many donors also provide a giftfor the benefit of the church’s common mission funding system.o In 2012• Donors established 86 new permanent funds, bringing the totalunder Foundation management to 1,300 funds, with a total marketvalue of $130.7 million.• Six new legacy congregations extended their witness by using theirremaining assets to undergird ongoing ministries. A total of 73Disciples legacy congregations have entrusted their assets to theFoundation to benefit the church’s future witness.• Distributions from permanent funds, matured deferred gifts, donordirectedand donor-advised accounts (Steward’s Bank) totaled $7.2million.• Of the $7.2 million distributed during 2012, more than $822,000went directly to Disciples Mission Fund to support the church’switness.o Offering church ministries cost-effective and prudent investment services. Byfocusing on long-term, endowment-type investing, the Foundation provideschurch ministries holding endowment funds with an investment program that is incomplete alignment with their interests. The investment services program giveschurch ministries cost-effective access to a sophisticated asset mix that isspecifically designed for endowment-type investing, as well as oversightprocesses that most ministries are unable to perform. The Joint Investment Trustis an all-inclusive solution for the church’s long-term endowment assets. Thisinvestment service provides ministries of the church disciplined investment andspending counsel as they seek hands-on ways to be a movement for wholenessin a fragmented world.o In 2012, the Foundation received $29.4 million in new deposits into itssubject-to-withdrawal accounts, the most in a single year since 2006.• The Foundation’s Joint Investment Trust holds almost $441.3million of the church’s money under its care. Total Foundationassets, including operations and life-income gifts, totaled $501.7million at the end of 2012.• The Joint Investment Trust’s pooled funds returns, net of maximumcosts, for 2012, were:• Beasley Growth Fund: 13.9% in 2012; average return since

inception in December 1985, 9.0%• Common Balanced Fund: 12.2% in 2012; average returnsince inception in December 1985, 7.8%• Campbell Multi-Strategy Fund: 12.5% in 2012; averagereturn since inception in February 2008, 0.5%• Brown Income Fund: 9.5% in 2012; average return sinceinception in December 1989, 6.5%o The economic markets, while volatile, rewarded investors who maintaineddiscipline and were able to stay the course. Despite two dramaticeconomic declines since 2000, the Foundation’s investment servicesprogram has continued to grow and is stronger than ever.o Being a faith-based investor. We seek to fulfill our fiduciary responsibility byensuring that the resources we manage reflect our faith values. By sponsoringshareholder resolutions and engaging in dialogue with key corporate managers,the Foundation works to influence the way global companies conduct business,use resources and treat employees and the environment. We are in partnershipwith the Interfaith Center on Corporate Responsibility. ICCR, a coalition of faithbasedinstitutional investors, raises a prophetic voice of faith by seeking to builda more just and sustainable society by integrating social values into corporateand investor decisions.o Living out our faith in all aspects of our ministry. People, regardless of means,have concerns, hopes and a need for significance—to make a difference in theworld. Our development officers, through their work with individuals andcongregations, listen to donors’ and investors’ needs, share their joys, join intheir vision for the future, protect their interests and reassure them of God’spresence in their lives and in the world. The Foundation seeks to bringwholeness with a personal presence to congregations, pastors and individuals.o Through 2012, Foundation development staff:• Made 523 personal visits to donors and donor prospects• Visited 471 congregational pastors• Led 94 inheritance planning seminars for congregations and otherministries• Preached 57 sermons on planned giving• Conducted 93 investment seminars for leaders of church ministries• Met with 46 congregations to assist in the development ofendowment fund policies• Encouraged congregations to create their own planned givingministries. Workshops called Blessing Generation to Generationhelped better articulate for pastors and church leaders the value ofpermanent funds to enhance future ministries. More than a dozenof these special events were conducted in 2012 in various regions.Several similar events were held in partnership with the Center onFaith and Giving.o Inspiring trust, honesty and transparency. In a world fractured by mistrust of

institutions and dishonest activities, the Foundation strives to be a model of trustand transparency. Committed to work with a long-term vision, the Foundationstrives to preserve and protect the integrity of gifts made by donors to churchcauses now and forever. Maintaining accurate records, providing vital andresponsive customer service and working to serve the church as an “honestbroker” helps the Foundation maintain a climate of trust and honesty.Staff TransitionsAt the end of 2012, Clifford Chandler retired as assistant vice president; he hadoverseen the Foundation’s investment services program since joining the staff in 2001.Joe Hartman was appointed assistant vice president and they worked side-by-side inpreparation for the transition. Joe, who joined the staff in 2000, carries a deepunderstanding of the needs of Foundation partners. In the fall of 2012, Cathie Whitewas named the new investment services supervisor. She is a CPA and brings to theFoundation a broad experience in the banking industry.
