Chairman’s Chat Aug 2008June has been a very busy month. The 12 car was well attended andthe navigation very stimulating. The car show at Tesco’s raised £200 for Dame Hannah RogersSchool. There were many cars displayed and local police and WestCountry Rescue also supported the event. The diversity of the carsreally attracted the public and gained Plymouth Motor Club a few newmembers. I am not able to thank everyone personally but I extend mythanks to all the people who made the event a success. The summer ball was a cracking event. It was attended by 110 of PlymouthMotor Club’s past and present members. David Sharp ourPresident opened the evening with a welcome speech. Throughout themeal “Anesis” who played a Celtic harp and classical guitar entertainedguests. Stuart Turner and Allen Dean-Lewis MBE were theguests of honour and the speeches were entertaining and complimentaryof the club. The Master of Ceremonies engineered the smoothrunning of the evening. An auction followed the rather good fivecoursemeal. Darren Loveys who is an auctioneer facilitated the auctionthat together with the raffle raised £1400 for the club’s nominatedcharities, PLIMS Clic St Luke’s and Dame Hannah Rogers. Thankyou to Andy and Chris Pearce for organising the raffle. The eveninghas been committed to memory By Terry Thorne who took photographsof everyone on arrival and throughout the evening. These canbe viewed in their entirety on the club website. Orders for other photographscan be taken by ringing me 01752 341675.The tarmac Autotest in Plympton had 21 entries. Brian Benson wrotethe tests and Wayne Grimshaw slid his way to win the event. EditorialThis month has given you an opportunity, an opportunity that is to read lessof my ramblings, principally as ive only got two pages spare left when ivestarted to write my bit. So consider yourself lucky. Ill make up for it nextmonth.Aaaaaany way, what's happened over the last 4 weeks, truth be told not a lot, with a very full calendar it was clear that there was plenty I could have done, but in fact for a variety of reasons there's actually very little that ive done. The 12 car rally at the end of last month was eventually undertaken next toChris Smale in his Astra, due to Paul's unavailability at the last minute, darewe say it but he was fitting my central heating and hadn't finished, andGrowler Chanter, otherwise known as my wife, was quite keen that we havehot water after about 10 days without, I can tell you know, it was needed, she was starting to pong a little. Subsequently, after a few calls to find someoneto either drive my car, or who was looking for a navigator, Chris said hewas available and off we went. I relatively uneventful night left us in thirdafter a short piece of navigation near the beginning caught me out. It was oneof those simple bits that as soon as someone tells you what it was you feellike bashing your head in to the wall and shouting “Dohhhhh” as it reallywas so simple yet I couldn't see it on the night. Third gave a reasonablepoints haul, and left me in second place in the championship, so not the endof the world, and with Paul and I organising the Vauxhall Cup Rally thismonth (July) were not competiting again now until September.Anton and I were due to go off to Wales for the 1000 Lanes road rally, sadlya technical fault with the cars electrics meant that we didn't get to leave therealms of Cornwall, so had an opportunity to stay home that weekend and dosomething else. I think I may have slept for most of it, or vegetated in frontof the telly, not the best way to spend a weekend but the weather was rubbishanyway so nothing lost there. And then there's the weather, lets not talk about the weather as its somewhatdepressing again after a soggy summer for 2007 it seems that the long hotsummers of my childhood (and im only 16) are long gone. Perhaps is a reflectionon the amount of sin around, the big guy has decided to wee on ourfireworks. Or perhaps its random weather, who really cares as there's preciouslittle we can do about it anyway.August 2008 www.plymouthmotorclub.co.uk Page 7

Plans for the month ahead start this very weekend with a full schedule. Fridayevening sees Paul and I sorting the 12 car rally, so that’s a 2am to bed.Saturday sees Anton and I off to Sidmouth for the Barbara Carter Rally sothat’s no sleep as its an all night event. Sunday sees Mike and I competing atSt Eval in the Pug 106, so that means im driving straight from the finish ofthe Barbara Carter, to my house, collect my wife and cars, and drive to StEval, thus arriving with about 6 hours sleep in approx 54 hours. I think I maywell be tired.Moving through the month we have a variety of events in the calendar, witha selection of rallies and social events, if your interested in any of them thenlet the organisers know ASAP and see what's what.My final word for this month is about the Centenary Dinner, for those of youwho were there, you know how good it was, for those who weren't, youmissed a very good night. Sadly, as with these types of events, they are noteveryone's cup of tea for a variety of reasons, to start with its not a cheapnight out, and for some its quite formal and as such not their thing. All I cansay is the next chance we have is the Plymouth Motor Club Dinner andDance in December where once again we will have the opportunity to wineand dine in style. Some are put off by the title of Dinner and Dance, assumingit’s a very formal affair, and whilst initially it is a refined and dignifiedevent, its simply all about having fun, a few drinks, a decent DJ normallyplays some decent music, and socially it’s a great chance to enjoy at anylevel, whether it’s a drinking competition in the bar afterwards, or a quietchat in a corner, either way its all about fun.I cant believe im talking about year end stuff when were just at the halfwaystage for 2008. The remainder of this year is still all about celebrating our100th year, so there is plenty on to enjoy at this time, so get your lead feetout for driving, your light feet out for dancing, your drinking feet out for socialising, and your smelly feet out for washing, cos after the rest of this yearyou will need to.RegardsAlfPage 8 www.plymouthmotorclub.co.uk August 2008

Competition ReportOkay I unfortunately have to start off this month’s chat on a subjectthat seems to be creeping more and more into our sport. After recountingmy exploits at a recent kart meeting, where an official was verballyabused. To my consternation at the next committee meeting I amhearing that our own marshals are being abused at club events!!My stance on this is quite simple, if it is proven that competitors havebeen abusing any officials / marshals, and they hold a competition licenceI will personally ask the MSA to suspend the licence for a minimumof 30 days. If they do not hold a competition licence, I will askthe committee to suspend the club membership for a minimum of 30days, as such you will not be entitled to take part in any club event. You have been warned, so it’s up to you to control your emotions!!!On a lighter side, I would like to thank all of you who provided auction/ raffle prizes for the recent Centenary Ball. If you did not makethe evening we managed to raise £1460.00 for four local charities StLuke’s Hospice, Dame Hannah Rogers school, CLIC and PLIMS,hopefully we can add to this total during the year and give them abumper payout later.Well let’s talk about competitions Autotests, what a night on the 2 ndJuly down at AD electrical. 21 yes 21 entries for a mid-week Autotest,I was lucky enough again to double drive John Sluman’s Nova, whichseemed suited to the small test area. Fun you better believe it, on thefirst test I managed to scatter 2 cones and failed to stop astride aline!!! But hey I did get better after finding it was better keeping twohands on the protrusion from the steering wheel (knob to you andme!!! Oh er). Thanks must go to Wayne Grimshaw for his efforts,Brian Benson for designing the tests and Andy Slade for the use of thecar park, if you want to know what it’s all about as the old game showsaid ‘come on down’.Okay on to future events the Wiscombe Hillclimb 5 clubs meeting, date 6 th / 7 th September. Venue location south of Honiton, follow theAugust 2008 www.plymouthmotorclub.co.uk Page 9

ADE Tarmac Autotest2/7/2008Reading warnings of torrential rain for the Plymouth area onWednesday afternoon, I was a little doubtful as to whether thismonths evening autotest would go ahead, but it certainly did! Arrivedat ADE car park to find loads of competitors and spectatorsfilling the area, an impressive turnout!Despite the large number of entries, 21 in total, amazing organisationstill got us competing at 6.30, with everyone being a little hesitant tobe the first out there. A couple of familiar tests, and a couple I’d notseen before had been given to us, and it was looking to be a good evening.Things soon got underway, with the more enthusiastic drivers kickingup dust, sliding past the garages on the left. My first run was ok, althoughI struggled with the really tight section, but keen for anothergo. That ended up being a wrong test, but I always get one! A challengingfirst test, with some of the larger cars struggling, but good tokick things off.The next test laid out made me a little nervous at first, as we’re bothstill struggling to spin the 205, but it ended up being damn good fun!It consisted of three gates, which had to be entered backwards, thequickest way clearly using the handbrake, spinning the car in backwardsin one smooth manoeuvre. However, I was fully capable ofmessing this up, so would it be worth taking the slow and steady approach?Nick went for it though, so I was clearly going to try and do itbetter, and I’d seen John and Wayne do it easily in similar sized cars. After I required reverse for five gates, I managed the last gate in one, small achievement, but made me happy! (I glossed over the cone I hitearlier in that run!). Many people seemed to really enjoy this fairlyopen test, which gave everyone the opportunity to open it up a bit andreally go for it.August 2008 www.plymouthmotorclub.co.uk Page 11

More brilliant organisation saw all drivers getting 3 runs at the finaltest, a slalom with one gate before the finish. Yet again the minismade this look far easier than I found it, the red mini driven by AndySlade and Paul Inch looking particularly impressive. My confidencewas definatley up by now, which saw me attempt to pull away in 3 rdand unnecessarily reverse half the length of the car park! All in all an amazing evening, with a good range of experienced anddrivers quickly learning, but good to see so many drivers out there. Ireally enjoyed it, my second tarmac autotest, and would encourageanyone thinking of doing it to go for it. We started at a grass autotest, which was relaxed and brilliant fun, and the upcoming grass autotestin August would be a brilliant opportunity to get involved. Massivethanks are due to all the marshals and everyone who organised theevent, managing a very impressive 145 runs in 2 hours or so, welldone! Also thanks to Kevin coopers, who’s very generous discounthas kept the 205 on the road, and of course Andy Slade for the use ofhis car park.Lawrence JonesPTO for resultsKEVI COOPER MOTOR FACTOR’sJust a reminder to members that on production of a valid membershipcard, you will be entitled to some very generous discount whenyou are buying your car parts from the Octagon Depot. The discount varies depending on what you buy, but certainly generalservice items like filters and brake components get great reductions, whilst other items like oil not quite so generous, but you stillwill be pleasantly surprised.Page 12 www.plymouthmotorclub.co.uk August 2008

Camel Vale Motor Club ASWMC AutotestSt Merryn 29 th June 2008In some ways this event started back during the winter , a chance mentionto Pam Hartill about Camel Vale running a Nat B event as around of the 2008 ASWMC Championship . This thought comingabout having competed several times at the tarmac event venue at StMerryn. With the endorsement of Nic Ayre , Championship Co-Coordinator , itwas in the calendar . Not paying much attention , just that it was in ,but it was to be the day after Plymouth MC’c Summer CentenaryCharity Ball ! This major event had been planned for well over threeyears , the organisers of which were rewarded by special guests StuartTurner and Alan Dean-Lewis from the MSA , not only were they todeliver two very entertaining speeches , but also present to PMC the15 th MSA CENTENARY TROPHY , in recognition of the clubsachievement , the club now officially the 15 th oldest licensed club inthe UK out of over 400 clubs , well chuffed are we .The celebrations had to be in moderation as I did not want to miss theevent at St Merryn , James and Tracey Menear were also at the Dukeof Cornwall for the celebrations , another driver whilst enjoying thenight had thoughts on the activities of the next day.The night survived and a leisurely start by normal standards , events atWarminster and Blandford usually have 9.00 am starts , the plannedsign on for St Merryn a sensible 11.0 am , ideal.Twelve entries assembled for the event , with National AutotestChampionship Leader Alistair Moffatt being drafted in as Clerk of theCourse , assisted by Thomas Bricknell. At first glance the tests looked quite complicated , but that is one ofthe tricks of drawing and designing tests, as when they were beingdriven they were not quite as bad and were fantastic. The venue cer-Page 14 www.plymouthmotorclub.co.uk August 2008

tainly lending itself to some open long tests. The surface changes alsoadded to the fun , some really grippy tarmac and concrete mixed withpatches of grass and in places lots of gravel on the tests.Four attempts at six tests was the plan and after the first twelve , CurrentASWMC Championship Leader Mark Williams from Bristol inhis home designed and built Mini based special was leading , by asmall margin of 1.7 secs from Wayne Grimshaw in his Babcock Marine/ Pure Motorsport supported Nova 1.4 SR. Nic Ayre was at thispoint not far behind in 3 rd place in his Westfield. The second set of three tests were just as much fun as the first , howevermost drivers had a penalty of some sort by the end. Mark in hisMini Special continued to dominate the event , the nimbleness of hiscar be suited to the day. ASWMC which sees him extend his lead in the 2008 Richard EggerInsurance ASWMC AUTOTEST CHAMPIONSHIP.I must say that on home ground , rarely do I get the better of Roger orJames , but this was an exception , and unusually by quite a marginWayne took the class win on 1210.57 secs which moves him up intosecond place in the ASWMC Championship , Roger taking 1 st in classon 1330.81 secs and James 2 nd on 1389.16 secs. Things could havebeen so different , as on the last test , just after the final directionchange Wayne had a CV Joint disintegrate, not wanting a penalty ormaximum he leapt from the car and pushed the Nova over the line ,as at that point he was unaware how close Roger or James was. Otherrunners in the class , Camel Vale regular , when the tides wrong! atleast Les Duff was playing in his Skoda , another well travelled driverwas Chris Damper heading West from Dorset to share the Pug 206 offirst time auto tester Simon Quoreenton. Both drivers in the sharedPug were having fun , perhaps Alistairs tests were not totally ideal fora first event , none the less they carried on and seemed to enjoy themselves.Nic Ayre took the class win in the combined Sports and Special Classwith 1194.67 secs , in his Westfield with Ian Griffiths , past winner ofthe ASWMC Championship in 2 nd place in his Mini Special on1238.41 secs. Tony Carver having a bit of an off day was 3 rd with1247.99 secs. Also in the specials class , and not the most common ofspecials vehicles were Mark Light and Lewis Lee in there sharedRover 400 Special on 1351.80 secs and 1584.22 secs respectively.Truly a great day , good tests great venue ideal weather , . ewcombe's rally season gets back on track inWales.Rally Driver : Martin ewcombe : RPM Evo ChallengeMedia Award Winner 20042008 South West Rally Championship & ational Rallycontender_____________________________________________________________________Plymouth Motor Club rally driver Martin Newcombe is off to theSwansea Bay National B Rally next weekend (19 July) to get his rallyseason back on track. Early season woes saw an early exit from theSunseeker Rally in Bournemouth due to engine overheating problems.Although he was on the pace and heading for a podium finish on theCaerwent Rally, similar problems denied him third overall and a classwin. However, he did bring his Mitsubishi Evo 6 home to second inclass and thirteenth overall following a spirited fight back after droppingto 70th at one point."Everything seemed to go wrong that day"; Said Martin. "We pushedthe car over finish line to complete the event. It was a miracle becausethe clutch had packed up, the gearbox was making an horrendousnoise, and the engine and turbo had both cooked in the melee to get tothe finish." He added. After a couple of months of hard work Martin and his co driver fatherPeter have rebuilt the engine, changed the gearbox and repaired theclutch. Martin further added; "The car is now ready, it is stronger andmore powerful and we have the potential to compete favourably in theopen group A class which includes the very expensive world rallycars. The Swansea Bay Rally is a qualifying round of the Southwest RallyChampionship along with five other regional championships. Martinand his Dad will be racing with over 100 competitors at speeds of 120mph along gravel tracks in the forests of South Wales. Starting at oneminute intervals the event will include 5 special stages over 44 competitivemiles linked by 90 road miles.August 2008 www.plymouthmotorclub.co.uk Page 17

Letters to the EditorDear Alf,Firstly, may I congratulate all concerned for a truly memorable eveningon the occasion of The Centenary Ball on June 28th.at TheDukeof Cornwall Hotel. However, without wishing to appear churlish, may I take this opportunityto correct and `fill-in` some of the information given during theevening regarding past members of The PMC who have competed inInternational Rallies in their day.I was very pleased to hear reference made to my late Father, RonaldHarper, who competed in a number of Rallies in the 1950`s with hisbusiness partner, George Turnbull. These included the Monte-CarloRally (several times), The Alpine Rally, and the RAC Rally in whichthey won their class in 1951.However there were other PMC memberswho were competing at International level at that time, (now referredto by many observers as `The Golden age of Rallying`); LeonFredman and Peter Weeks, Managing Director of the Vauxhall Dealers,Allens of Plymouth, (incorrectly referred to as Peter Allen duringthe evening) ,to name but two, but there were others, most sadly nolonger with us. George Turnbull was for many years considered to be`The Father of The Plymouth Motor Club`, even to the point of Guaranteeinga substantial loan taken out by the Club to purchase our ownClubhouse in Mannamead, which had to be resold when Planningpermission for change of use was refused. Just think what that wouldhave been worth today!!Moving on to later years;Mike Lane, who must surely have been themost successful Rally Driver the PMC has ever produced , was competingin numerous International events in the 1960`s both in the UK,( RAC,Welsh, Scottish Rallies) and in Europe ( Monte-Carlo and TulipRallies). His navigator on most of these events was Roger Doidge,a PMC member who was also a very skilled driver in his own right.Roger also navigated for me on a number of events at that time;TheScottish,The RAC, and The Monte-Carlo Rally of 1968 when we werepart of the Semi- Works NSU team driving NSU TTS `s ( an amazingcar incidentally!!) Also, when the RAC Rally of 1967 was cancelled atPage 22 www.plymouthmotorclub.co.uk August 2008

short notice because of an outbreak of Foot and Mouth Disease, I wasinvited to take part, together with all the Works Drivers, in thefirst ever Televised Rallycross event which took place at Lydden Hill, and a new type of Motor Sport was born that day!! Other drivers thereincluded Paddy Hopkirk and Graham Hill, ( Damon`s Dad for thebenefit of younger readers !!), and I even managed to find myself inthe winning team with them!!.Thank you for allowing me the space to share some historyand memories of past members of the PMC with you, and may I sendall present members of The PMC my very best wishes for the next 100years.....and thanks again for a great evening!!Rodney Harper.Spotlamp is published on the penultimate Friday of each month (hopefully!).Contributions should be sent to the Editor, address as published in the list of ClubOfficers, or Emailed to Spotlamp@blueyonder.co.uk (in MS Word plain text ).Copy should arrive by the 13th of the month. !!!Official’s Rant!!!Although Alan & I were away on holiday for the last 12 Car, I havefound it necessary to put pen to paper (or fingers to keyboard) to highlighta few anomalies not just from 12 Car competitors, which havebeen increasing over the past months, which are as follows:-1. Filling in forms correctly and signatures – All Club and MSAforms are legal documents and are required to be filled in fully andcorrectly and signed in Blue or Black ink! (Not in Pencil!) Don’t forgetalso that some forms have two sides and yes, you do have to fill itall in, as there are reasons for it.2. Driving Standards when leaving a venue – Although the competition/eventmight have finished, you are still a representative of theClub whether you were a competitor, marshal or spectator until youarrive home, so please, no more speeding off or testing the handbrakein car-parks etc, as we all know that it sounds & looks good, but not tothe general public or PC Plod!3. Retiring from an event – If as a competitor on an event (Comus,12 Car, Scatter, Autotest etc) you retire due to either mechanical failure, accident, sickness or just lost, then you must contact the organiser/co-ordinator(or pass a message via a marshal), stating your retirementas well as either visiting the finish venue to hand in your timecard/answersheets (or, where you are unable to do so, send in yourtimecard/answer sheets within 24hours). As a Club member competingon a Club event, you must also abide by the rules laid down in theMSA ‘Blue Book’.4. Protests – If you are going to make a protest, your first point ofcall is to the organiser/co-ordinator who will allow you to, as Alansays, bash your gums for 2 minutes! Whereupon the organiser/coordinatorwill make a decision. If you feel that this decision is not correct, you need to protest in the correct manner either laid down in thecompetition/championship rules or the MSA Blue Book, along withthe correct fee. Do not take it upon yourselves either as a competitoror organiser to enter into any conversation or correspondence (e-mailsetc) with any one else, as it may corrupt further proceedings by Stewardsetc. which might affect the outcome. The protest is between youand the Co-ordinator/Stewards and no-one else.August 2008 www.plymouthmotorclub.co.uk Page 25

Abusive language – When competing, you must remember that Organisers,Co-ordinators and Marshals and other Officials are classedas Judges of Fact. If abusive language is used either against them orheard by them against another competitor or Club member, then as acompetitor you may be asked to leave the venue or have your timecardremoved and further action maybe taken against you. Abusive languageis unfortunately out there, but will not be tolerated by our Club.Sometimes the Marshal might get it wrong, but there are ways andmeans of dealing with the problem and swearing and shouting is notone of them, especially when junior members are present! It is ashame that I have had to write this but these points need emphasisingand the guilty ones amongst you know who you are!!HelenPure MotorsportFast road and racing brake upgradesSuspension kits includingmotorsport applicationsInduction kits, carb & throttle body filtersPerformance exhaustsPerformance clutchesAlloy wheel and tyre packagesEngine conversionsEngine upgrades:Gas flowed headsPerformance camsFull engine buildsECU fitting & mappingAuthorised dealers for:Weber & Dellorto carbsJenvey throttle bodiesEmerald ECUsNewman camsRecaro seatsKoni suspensionAvo suspensionKW coiloversK&N filtersRam-Air filtersAP brakes & clutchesMintex brakesTar-Ox brakesMagnex exhaustsMilltek exhaustsSRDesign enginesFitting service on allproducts.Diagnostic capability.Suspension set up.Performance servicingECU mappingw w w . p u r e - m o t o r s p o r t . c o . u kVisit our showroom open 9:00-6:00 Mon-SatBroadmeadows Garage, WadebridgeTel: 01208 812046Page 26 www.plymouthmotorclub.co.uk August 2008

2008 PLYMOUTH MOTOR CLUBADE GROUP AUTOTEST CHAMPIOSHIPWith Andy Slades generous offer for the club to use the car park of hisbusiness HQ at Marsh Mills for midweek events this has given us theopportunity to run a full club championship this year. If all theplanned events run , we will have 9 rounds with the best 7 scores tocount. It all started back in March at Tavistock , then the first midweek eventin May , we managed to get on the grass at the Spring Bank Holidayevent followed by two more evening events at Marsh Mills.Tavistock saw Dan Benson in the “Team Benson” Mini take the overallwin , the first Marsh Mills event had Wayne Grimshaw in his BabcockMarine/Pure Motorsport supported Nova SR take the overallwin , onto grass and James Menear in his Mini showed us all the wayto do it in what was best described as difficult conditions. Back toMarsh Mills at the beginning of June and Peter Kelsey in the MiniSpecial he shares with Tony Carver took the overall honours. The Julyevent will be remembered if for nothing else 21 drivers competing !What a night , but this saw Wayne take his second overall win of theyear in his Nova.Wayne is now just clear on 90pts with John Sluman in second with 88pts . Dan Benson with a consistent run of results is 3 rd with 84 pts .James Menear , not making the Tavistock event , is there in 4 th on 72pts waiting for the dropped scores to come into play. The success story of the year must be the number of new and relativelyyoung drivers and members entering these fun good valueevents. So much so that we are running a “Production Class” sectionwithin the series. Under the guidance of Dad , Brian Benson , ChristopherBenson is developing his skills and car control as each eventpasses , also assisted in the car by Dan Benson. Christopher is leadingwith 82 pts from Jennie Locke in second on 58 pts . Also worthy of aPage 28 www.plymouthmotorclub.co.uk August 2008

mention , new members and new to Autotestng is Lawrence and NickJones , certainly learning fast and getting in the swing of things.

2008 Celebrations / Social Corner. What an evening, after years of planning the Clubs Centenary Ballwent off superbly well on the 28 th of June.It was a hard job to recognise people all dressed up in their finery forthe evening. Everywhere you looked there were people smiling andenjoying themselves.Fran and I were fortunate enough to be on the Top table next to AlanDean-Lewis and his wife, 2 of our guests of honour. They commentedon how friendly the Club is, how nice it was to see a large spread ofages and how much thought and effort had been put in to the event. They liked the commemorative Wire Glasses that the guests got tokeep and the program / booklet on the Club history and also on howmuch they had enjoyed the event.Certainly the Ball room at the Duke of Cornwall looked stunning anda big thank you must go to everyone involved in making the eveningone to remember for a long time to come by all who attended. The Charity Raffle and Auction raised over £1400 and saw allsorts ofitems being bid for ranging from a ride in a Rally Car to a book of Picturesby David Bailey to a Subaru Umbrella, and even our CompetitionSecretary Andy Pearce was put up for auction. (I am not sure if itwas Chris that put him up for sale, but they only get him for a day.)During his day as a slave he is going to have his head shaved for theClubs Charities, I have agreed to have my beard shaved off after 20plus years as well if enough people sponsor us so please dig into yourwallets and help the Clubs Charities this year. WISCOMBE AWAITS YOU!“Times is ‘ard and friends is few” so the saying goes. There’s no denyingthat the first part is true with petrol & diesel prices at record highs &prices rising faster than one of Darren’s lifts. I’m not so sure about the secondpart though, in fact I’m rather hoping that it’s not true at all.A couple of weeks ago I saw something extremely rare, Andy Pearcelooking embarrassed!!!! We were at a Five Clubs Wiscombe meeting & thelack of marshals from Plymouth was mentioned, which was the cause of theaforementioned embarrassed look. To be fair, it wasn’t just Plymouth thathad failed to supply marshals for the event last year but the other club(begins with a “B” in case you want to know) concerned can go & sort theirown life out…..As part of the “Five Clubs” partnership, our primary task is to supplysufficient marshals to run the bottom paddock. Not an onerous task really, 3or 4 people are quite sufficient. In fact 2 people, John Sluman & DebbieLocke managed admirably last year. So this year we are looking to at leastdouble our marshalling force, preferably without calling on the efforts of lastyear’s marshals. So come on then, don’t be shy, stand up & be counted. Wiscombe issituated 5 miles South of Honiton, a comfortable one hour drive from Plymouth– the same sort of time it takes to get to Werrington, but a bit furtherin terms of distance. When you get there, a warm (well usually) welcomeawaits you. You even get to drive down the complete hill to get to the paddock- you don’t get that at Werrington , do you! For those who can rememberNational A Top 12 runoffs, Dick Mayo, & very late finishes and haven’tbeen back since, Dick passed away several years ago & the new Clerkingteam are rather less grumpy – in fact more like a bunch of clowns really.Sorry Andy!!!In fact, you’ll get a free lunch & you’re very likely to get a bag ofchocolates to munch on if you stay till mid afternoon, & I can guaranteechocolate buns or cake to all Plymouth marshals on both days. Just go & seeLinda in the results caravan & say I sent you!!!!!Going back to the first part of my opening statement, I’m sure that theclub will be providing some financial assistance to those who come along tomarshal, see next month’s Competition Secretary report for more details.

Lawrencenow has 52 pts , so as with the main Championship it is turninginto quite a battle in this section and the dropped scores later in theyear will be all important.Next eventsSUNDAY JULY 20 th TAVISTOCKWEDNESDAY AUGUST 6 th MARSH MILLSMONDAY 25 th AUGUST GRASS , BERE ALSTON venue tbcTUESDAY 9 th SEPTEMBER MARSH MILLSPLEASE OTE THE SEPTEMBER EVET DATEIf you want to have a go at any of the above events please contactWAYNE GRIMSHAW to let him know of your intentions07817703168Vauxhall Cup Rally25th JulyMarshals and crews wanted.Start in Estover at AC Haines Engineeringand finish near Tavistock in the Mary TavyInn for breakfast at approx 12.30am.For marshals contact Alf/Paul on 205638For Entries contact Helen on 219739August 2008 www.plymouthmotorclub.co.uk Page 29
