TheTuskegee Airmen included pilots,navig<strong>at</strong>ors, bombardiers, maintenanceand support staff, instructors,and all the personnel whokept the planes in the air.The military selected TuskegeeInstitute in Alabama to t<strong>rain</strong> pilotsbecause of its commitment to aeronauticalt<strong>rain</strong>ing. Tuskegee had thefacilities, and engineering andtechnical instructors, as well as aclim<strong>at</strong>e <strong>for</strong> year round flying. Thefirst Civilian Pilot T<strong>rain</strong>ingProgram students completed theirinstruction in May 1940. TheTuskegee program was thenexpanded and became the center<strong>for</strong> African-American avi<strong>at</strong>ionduring World War II.The Tuskegee Airmen overcamesegreg<strong>at</strong>ion and prejudice tobecome one of the most highlyrespected fighter groups of WorldWar II. They proved conclusivelyth<strong>at</strong> African Americans could flyand maintain sophistic<strong>at</strong>ed comb<strong>at</strong>aircraft. “They - the TuskegeeAirmen and their descendants -are bent upon giving kids betweenthe ages of 13 and 17 educ<strong>at</strong>ionclasses, labs, and activities on avi<strong>at</strong>ion,”Sauer said.He said the group strives toencourage not only AfricanAmerican, but also Hispanic andNavajo kids to consider a career inavi<strong>at</strong>ion. “And also girls,” Sauersaid. “We educ<strong>at</strong>e twenty-five kidsannually. Ten of these kids comefrom Magdalena.”He said th<strong>at</strong> the program wasin jeopardy and was about to becancelled, “because nobody wantedto organize it.” Sauer said hewould do it, but not <strong>for</strong> money. “Ididn’t want money. I just wantedten kids [out of 25 st<strong>at</strong>ewide] tocome from Magdalena.”The Tuskegee AirmenIncorpor<strong>at</strong>ed sponsors the educ<strong>at</strong>ionalprogram each year. Sohaib and Moazz are both Biologygradu<strong>at</strong>es; Omar, computer science.Tech President Dan Lopez said, “Therewas an impressive group of students gradu<strong>at</strong>ingthis year. Some have done major workas first authors, and many more are secondauthors. Extraordinary.”He said many have jobs waiting <strong>for</strong> them,and others are going to gradu<strong>at</strong>e school.“Tech gradu<strong>at</strong>es normally see a startingsalary of $63,000, compared to the naitonalaverage of $60,000,” he said. “Of all theschools in the intermountain st<strong>at</strong>es we ranknumber two after Colorado School ofMines.“This is my favorite day of the year,”Lopez said. “Our commencements are morefestive and light-hearted. These studentswork very hard to earn their degrees.”Sohaib Soliman, SGA President,accepted the Brown Award, Tech’s topaward, from President Dan Lopez. Heearned his bachelor’s in biology with a 3.87GPA. He impressed his professors by hisresearch ability and his academic prowess.He worked with professors in the chemistrydepartment to synthesize novel anti-cancerdrugs. He is a co-author of a paper th<strong>at</strong> hasbeen submitted to the Journal of MedicinalChemistry. Last year, he was selected as aMacey Scholar, which is Tech’s top academicaward.Sohaib also worked <strong>at</strong> the office ofSocorro dentist Dr. Duane Beers, where hedesigned and built crowns <strong>for</strong> more than400 p<strong>at</strong>ients. His career goal is to become adental surgeon and he’s been accepted todentistry school <strong>at</strong> the University ofWashington in Se<strong>at</strong>tle.As Student Government president, heled a st<strong>at</strong>ewide collegi<strong>at</strong>e ef<strong>for</strong>t th<strong>at</strong> successfullylobbied the legisl<strong>at</strong>ure to provide $10million of emergency funding to keep alivethe Legisl<strong>at</strong>ive Lottery Scholarship <strong>for</strong> oneyear, and organized a st<strong>at</strong>ewide summit inSocorro th<strong>at</strong> opened a dialog about providinga permanent solution to the financial crisisth<strong>at</strong> is besetting the fund.One st<strong>at</strong>e sen<strong>at</strong>or who <strong>at</strong>tended the summitsaid he is trying to convince Sohaib toabandon his plans to pursue dentistry andrun <strong>for</strong> office instead.Not to be outdone, Sohaib’s brotherMoaaz was told he has been named theDavid K. Shortess Prize winner <strong>for</strong> academicexcellence in the Biology Department,which comes with a $300 prize. The awardwas presented to him after the ceremony byDr. Snezna Rogelj, department chair.
