The topteams and individuals in each divisionqualify <strong>for</strong> the Intern<strong>at</strong>ionalYouth Hunter Educ<strong>at</strong>ionChallenge in July.“Participants wishing to competein the n<strong>at</strong>ional event must<strong>at</strong>tend a st<strong>at</strong>e event like the one inNew Mexico,” said Rick Andes,st<strong>at</strong>e coordin<strong>at</strong>or <strong>for</strong> the challenge.“Last year, we even had a teamfrom Pagosa, Colorado, <strong>at</strong>tendour event.”Not all st<strong>at</strong>es have a st<strong>at</strong>e-levelcompetition. Five gener<strong>at</strong>ions ofthe Bruton family have ranched in NewMexico.Jack’s grandparents, Charlie and AgnesBruton, ranched <strong>for</strong> a time in Texas andbegan ranching in New Mexico in the1880’s.Jack married his high school sweetheart,Grace Harriet, in 1948. In 1952, Jack andGrace started ranching on the San AugustinePlains. The Bruton family has ranched onthose plains ever since. Throughout his life,Jack was active in the community. He servedon the Socorro Electric Cooper<strong>at</strong>ive Inc.Board <strong>for</strong> 40 years. He was on the SaladoSoil Conserv<strong>at</strong>ion Board <strong>for</strong> 15 years and onthe Good Samaritan Planning Board <strong>for</strong>Socorro County.Jack was also a member in the NewMexico C<strong>at</strong>tle Grower’s Associ<strong>at</strong>ion and theNew Mexico Farm Livestock Bureau.
