Prior to injection the procedure should be explained to the patient. The site needsto be cleansed by wiping the area in concentric circles working from the insideout. For both injections the needle is to be inserted in a dart like motion and pullback on the plunger to ensure no flashback of blood. If blood is present, the needlemust be withdrawn immediately and discarded. Drawing and administrationprocedures must be repeated. If blood is not present, slowly inject drug, withdrawneedle and massage the injection site (IM injections only) to reduce discomfortand disperse drug. Always discard all sharps in appropriate container. Reassesspatient for changes and document the procedure.Figure P 8Land marking for IM injectionThe deltoid is an excellent choice for IM and SQ injections in the emergencysetting. For an IM injection find the acromion process and place three fingersdistally to find the proper injection site (See Fig. P 8).
