DIAGNOSIS OF FOOD ALLERGY<br />

Why this is important: As many as 1 <strong>in</strong> 3 people th<strong>in</strong>k <strong>the</strong>y have food allergy.<br />

However, when confrmed by a healthcare pr<strong>of</strong>essional, only about 1 <strong>in</strong> 28<br />

people have food allergy (as dist<strong>in</strong>ct from food <strong>in</strong>tolerance). Self-report<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong><br />

food allergy is unreliable <strong>and</strong> can lead you to avoid foods unnecessarily. This<br />

can affect your nutrition <strong>and</strong> quality <strong>of</strong> life.<br />

Tests to identify foods caus<strong>in</strong>g your allergic reaction <strong>in</strong>volv<strong>in</strong>g IgE<br />

If your healthcare pr<strong>of</strong>essional suspects that you have an IgE-based food<br />

allergy, <strong>the</strong>re are blood <strong>and</strong> sk<strong>in</strong> tests that can identify <strong>the</strong> foods that may be<br />

caus<strong>in</strong>g your reaction. The results <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>se tests only show that you produce<br />

IgE antibodies to food allergens. Blood <strong>and</strong> sk<strong>in</strong> tests alone cannot be used<br />

to diagnose food allergy. You do not have food allergy unless you also have<br />

cl<strong>in</strong>ical symptoms.<br />

Table B summarizes <strong>the</strong> value <strong>of</strong> various tests <strong>in</strong> identify<strong>in</strong>g allergens <strong>and</strong><br />

diagnos<strong>in</strong>g food allergy <strong>in</strong>volv<strong>in</strong>g IgE.<br />
