mo<strong>the</strong>r’s diet while she is pregnant or breastfeed<strong>in</strong>g prevents <strong>the</strong> development<br />

<strong>of</strong> food allergy <strong>in</strong> her child.<br />

allergy from develop<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> children at risk <strong>for</strong> food allergy <strong>and</strong> who are not<br />

exclusively breast-fed.<br />

What else you should know: Only a limited number <strong>of</strong> studies, with vary<strong>in</strong>g<br />

results, have exam<strong>in</strong>ed whe<strong>the</strong>r <strong>the</strong> use <strong>of</strong> hydrolyzed <strong>in</strong>fant <strong>for</strong>mulas can<br />

prevent food allergy.<br />

Guidel<strong>in</strong>e 40 suggests that you should not delay <strong>in</strong>troduc<strong>in</strong>g solid foods,<br />

<strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g potentially allergenic foods, to an <strong>in</strong>fant beyond 4 to 6 months<br />

<strong>of</strong> age.<br />

What else you should know: There is no evidence that supports delay<strong>in</strong>g<br />

<strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>troduction <strong>of</strong> solid foods to an <strong>in</strong>fant beyond 4 to 6 months <strong>of</strong> age to<br />

prevent allergic diseases from develop<strong>in</strong>g. This <strong>in</strong>cludes giv<strong>in</strong>g an <strong>in</strong>fant a<br />

food conta<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g milk, eggs, peanut, tree nuts, soy, or wheat. 2<br />

2 healthcare pr<strong>of</strong>essionals generally advise that no <strong>in</strong>fant or young child should be given whole or pieces <strong>of</strong> peanuts or tree nuts<br />

because <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> risk <strong>of</strong> chok<strong>in</strong>g. This is an important safety consideration. This <strong>in</strong><strong>for</strong>mation is not found <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Guidel<strong>in</strong>es</strong> <strong>and</strong><br />

was not considered by <strong>the</strong> expert panel. Please check with your healthcare pr<strong>of</strong>essional <strong>for</strong> specifc guidance.
