Caused by <strong>Food</strong><br />

What should your healthcare pr<strong>of</strong>essional underst<strong>and</strong> when diagnos<strong>in</strong>g<br />

anaphylaxis caused by food?<br />

Guidel<strong>in</strong>e 41 recommends that a healthcare pr<strong>of</strong>essional diagnos<strong>in</strong>g a patient<br />

with anaphylaxis should underst<strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> follow<strong>in</strong>g:<br />

• Signs <strong>and</strong> symptoms <strong>of</strong> anaphylaxis<br />

• Tim<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> symptoms <strong>in</strong> relation to exposure to <strong>the</strong> allergenic food<br />

• Conditions such as asthma that may be associated with food allergy<br />

<strong>and</strong> how <strong>the</strong>se conditions may affect treatment<br />

• The limited value <strong>of</strong> laboratory tests dur<strong>in</strong>g an anaphylactic episode<br />

What else you should know: If you are experienc<strong>in</strong>g symptoms <strong>of</strong> anaphylaxis,<br />

seek immediate treatment <strong>and</strong> tell your healthcare pr<strong>of</strong>essional if you have a<br />

history <strong>of</strong> allergic reactions to food or have been previously diagnosed with<br />

food allergy.<br />

The symptoms <strong>of</strong> anaphylaxis<br />

The symptoms <strong>of</strong> anaphylaxis vary <strong>and</strong> can be diffcult to recognize. If you<br />

experience any one <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> follow<strong>in</strong>g three conditions, you may be experienc<strong>in</strong>g<br />

an anaphylactic episode:<br />

• Your symptoms appear with<strong>in</strong> m<strong>in</strong>utes to several hours <strong>and</strong> <strong>in</strong>volve sk<strong>in</strong>,<br />

mucosal tissue (moist l<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> body cavities, such as <strong>the</strong> nose, mouth,<br />

<strong>and</strong> GI tract), or both. You also have trouble breath<strong>in</strong>g or a drop <strong>in</strong> blood<br />

pressure (pale, weak pulse, confusion, loss <strong>of</strong> consciousness).<br />

• You have two or more <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> follow<strong>in</strong>g symptoms that occur with<strong>in</strong><br />

m<strong>in</strong>utes to several hours after exposure to a suspected allergenic food:<br />

– Hives, itch<strong>in</strong>ess, or redness all over your body <strong>and</strong> swell<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

lips, tongue, or <strong>the</strong> back <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> throat<br />

– Trouble breath<strong>in</strong>g<br />
