• MAIN FEATURE •(i) Hygiene and Sanitation Working Group (HSWG), with thegoal of encouraging dialog between stakeholders to increaseawareness on hygiene and sanitation; (ii) Water and SanitationTechnologies Working Group (WSTWG), with the purpose to bea media of exchanging ideas and experiences regarding propertechnologies; (iii) Urban Water and Sanitation Working Group(UWSWG), with the main purpose of encouraging better attentionto the availability of clean water and sanitation for poorpeople in the urban area; and (iv) Water and Sanitation forWomen and Children Working Group (WSWCWG), with thepurpose of encouraging attention to the interest of women andchildren in clean water and sanitation development.Program and ProjectIn order to maximize the work result of Clean Water andSanitation NGO, UWASNET develops two main programs of:1. Coordination, Information and Network ProgramThe purpose of this program is to accelerate effective coordination,collaboration, and network between clean water andsanitation NGO with other stakeholders. It is expected thatUWASNET member will be able to influence and respond policies,strategies, and implementations through the network andinformation exchange.The program objectives are (i) enabling the member toexchange ideas and experiences with other stakeholders regardingpolicy, strategy, and implementation; (ii) providing informationfocal point regarding UWASNET or other issues relatedwith clean water and sanitation; (iii) guarantee continuity ofUWASNET.Activities related with the program are (i) involvement in thedecision-making process, (ii) contribution of article writing inthe mass media; (iii) managing center of data and information;(iv) providing consultancy service for the member; (v) publishingroutine newsletter.2. Capacity Building ProgramThe purpose of this program is to enhance NGO capacity inorder to establish independent, dynamic, and effective NGO networkas the working partner of the government. Thus NGO isexpected to have an active role in achieving MDGs targets, havethe ability to respond government policy, and able to performinnovative activities of clean water and sanitation.THE SUSTAINABLE SANITATION ALLIANCE (SUSANA)Basis of EstablishmentThe main motivation of SuSana establishment was the UNGeneral Assembly decision to declare the Year 2008 as theInternational Sanitation Year, which followed in the year 2007by various sanitation development organizations in establishingopen sustainable sanitation network to support TSI 2008.SuSana Purpose Contributing in achieving MDGs' targets through promotionof sustainable sanitation Increasing awareness on sustainable sanitation solutionand promoting the awareness in large scale Demonstrating the important role of sanitation in achievingthe overall targets of MDGs Changing the sanitation paradigm through promotingreuse oriented sanitation approach without endangeringhealthMain FocusMain focus of SuSana is to promote sustainable sanitationimplementation in large scale water and sanitation program.Special Objectives Collecting and compiling information that will help decisionmaker in assessing various sanitation systems andtechnologies by taking sustainable criteria into consideration Demonstrating reuse oriented sanitation Collecting and presenting sanitation best practices withregard to TSI 2008 Identifying and illustrating mechanism to replicate sustainablesanitation implementation including funding instrumentto provide pro-poor sanitation Develop vision of how sustainable development can contributein achieving MDGsIn order to obtain these special objectives, general road mapfor TSI 2008 has been compiled.The Form of OrganizationSuSana is not a new organization, but more as unbindingorganization network that cooperates, with open and activenature in promoting sustainable sanitation. SuSana is supportedby several thematic working groups. • OM from various sources.PRINCIPLE SUMMARY OF SUSTAINABLE SANITATIONSeveral years ago sustainable sanitation principles have beenagreed by Water Supply and Sanitation Collaborative Councilknown as "Bellagio Principles for Sustainable Sanitation" on the 5thGlobal Forum, November 2000, namely:(i)Human value, live quality and settlement environmental safetyshould be the basis of all sanitation approach.(ii) In line with the good governance principles, decision makingshould involve participation of all stakeholders, especially costumerand service provider.(iii) Waste should consider to be resources and the managementshould be integrated and become part of integrated waterresources and waste management process.(iv) Overcoming sanitation problems should be done in minimumsize as manageable (household, environment, city, catchmentarea). • MAIN REPORT •WATER AND SANITATION(WATSAN)NETWORKINGThe network was establishedbased on concerns of several partiesthat realized that the issue ofclean water and environmental sanitationare currently often being ignored andhave not become the attention and commitmentof decision makers both innational or local level.On the other side, government policyin the WSES is not yet integrated. Manyprograms are overlapping; stakeholderswith WSES concern are still workingalone without cooperation, while thecommunity awareness with regards to theclean and healthy lifestyle is still considerablylow.A more strategic coordination andintegration is required from variousstakeholders to inter-coordinate andestablished bigger strength. Thus, a networkthat can communicate the need andinterest of all parties is necessary so thateach party may have place to be able tocontribute and synergized to accelerategoals achievements in the WSES development.Since the first Watsan Network meetingon February 27th, 2007 in Bappenasthat reached agreement to buildCommunication Network between stakeholdersin this sector, continued by amore intensive meeting on July andAugust 2007, a concept draft and strategicdirective of the future WatsanSigning agreement of Watsan Network establishment on October 8th, 2007 in JakartaNetwork. This concept is the basis ofagreement of Network members onOctober, 8th 2007 and has become amandate to be accomplished by the directiveteams.Name and Explanation of theNetworkWatsan Network-INA is a forum tosynergized potencies of information,knowledge and communication betweenstakeholders in cooperation that presentsbenefits for all parties.Vision of Watsan Network is to presentthe network as an effective forum ofWSES communication and informationin supporting stakeholders' participation(of governments, private and community)in the process of National development ofIndonesia.Whereas the mission is to synergizestrategic and applicable programs throughapplication of partnership principles,cooperation development of WSES management,capacity building of the institutionand the human resources, and increasingthe fund for WSES development.MembershipIn general, the Network is open,inclusive, and independent; anyone canbe the Network member: Individual, open for individuals withany citizenship.PercikAugust 20085
