Co-Owner of Culver Company Convicted on Fraud Charges
The co-owner of two health care companies has been
convicted on multiple health care fraud charges related to his
participation in a scheme to defraud Medicare, announced the
Departments of Justice and Health and Human Services.
A federal jury in the Central District of California found
Evans Oniha, 49, guilty of one count of conspiracy to commit
health care fraud, four counts of health care fraud and one count
of false statements relating to health care matters. Camillus
Ehigie, 50, who co-owned and operated the health care companies
with Oniha, pleaded guilty on July 5 to multiple health care
fraud charges in connection with his participation in the fraud
scheme. Oniha and Ehigie were indicted in February 2011. The
indictment also seeks forfeiture from the defendants.
Oniha and Ehigie co-owned Caravan Medical Supplies
Inc., located on Bristol Parkway in Culver City, a durable medical
equipment (DME) company, and Prosperity Home Health
Services Inc., a purported home health agency.
According to the indictment, from October 2002 to
February 2011, Oniha and Ehigie conspired with others to
Police Blotter
See Page 8
defraud Medicare by paying "marketers" for access to Medicare
beneficiary information and fraudulent prescriptions and other
documents for DME and home health services.
The defendants used the fraudulent documents
obtained from the marketers to submit and cause the submission
of false claims to Medicare for DME and home health services
that were not medically necessary, and that often were not provided
to Medicare beneficiaries. According to court documents,
Oniha and Ehigie caused Caravan to submit approximately $5.8
million in fraudulent claims to Medicare for DME purportedly provided
by Caravan.
The defendants caused Prosperity to submit approximately
$8 million in fraudulent claims to Medicare for home
health services purportedly provided by Prosperity. According to
court documents, Ehigie also owned another DME company,
Osbed Medical Supply. Ehigie caused Osbed to submit $6.1
million in fraudulent claims to Medicare.
Oniha is scheduled to be sentenced on Sept. 19 and
Ehigie is scheduled to be sentenced on Jan. 30, 2012.
Assemblymember Holly Mitchell
(D-Culver City) has introduced Assembly
Bill 1432, dubbed "Caylee's Law", which
would make it a felony in California to fail
to report the death or disappearance of a
child, aged 14 or younger, to law authorities
within 24 hours.
Calls for such legislation have
been inspired by the recent case of the
death, ruled a homicide, of two-year old
Caylee Anthony, who was not reported
missing for 31 days. Her mother, while
having been acquitted of the charge of
murder, has evoked outrage nationwide
for failing to report her child's disappearance.
"Law enforcement has known for
years that the first 48 hours of a person's
disappearance are critical to the chances
of finding that child alive and successfully
prosecuting any related criminal behavior,"
said Assemblymember Mitchell.
"Recent developments make it clear that
we don't have the luxury of leaving the
protection of children to others, or ignoring
well-founded suspicions."
Although it is late in the legislative
session to introduce new laws,
Mitchell, a member of the Assembly
Public Safety Committee and long-time
activist on behalf of children, believes
she's well positioned to lead the charge to
bring "Caylee's Law" into reality. She
looks to garner bipartisan support and
enlist child advocacy organizations in the
effort to get the bill swiftly signed into law.
Similar legislation is being considered in
other states.
"Public awareness of the need
for this bill is, tragically, very high now,"
said Mitchell. "We are answering the call
to get new tools in the hands of law
enforcement so that a negligent or abusive
parent need never be freed on a
technicality again." AB 1432 has been
introduced as an emergency bill so it can
progress through the legislative process
and not be subject to the usual deadlines.
Douglas Theatre Reveals 2011-12 Season Of Plays
Michael Ritchie, Artistic Director
of Center Theatre Group, has set the
2011-2012 season at CTG's Kirk Douglas
Theatre. The new season is the eighth at
the theater in Culver City and will feature
four productions and the popular
DouglasPlus programming.
It will run from September 17,
2011, through June 2012.
The new season will include the
poignant storytelling of Charlayne
Woodard in her newest play, "The Night
Watcher"; the riveting Ebony Repertory
Theatre production of Lorraine
Hansberry's classic "A Raisin in the Sun";
the ever-irreverent Culture Clash in the
new work written by Richard Montoya,
"American Night: The Ballad of Juan
José"; and the powerful voice of Danai
Gurira in her new play, "The Convert."
Included in DouglasPlus are a full
production of Rude Mechs' new musical
"I've Never Been So Happy" and a reading
of the Burglars of Hamm's "The
Behavior of Broadus."
"When we were planning this
new season at the Douglas," said Ritchie,
"I couldn't help but think of Kirk and Anne
Douglas and how their generosity allows
us to do our work. They recently awarded
a $1 million challenge grant to CTG, which
when combined with their earlier $1 million
seed grant, results in a $2 million investment
in the future of new works at the theatre.
This is really quite amazing
"We have four stand-out productions
in the new season. The stories they
tell are exceptionally rich in insight, humor
and compassion. With Charlayne
Woodard's candid look at the challenges
of choosing not to have children, Richard
Montoya's blend of comedy and social
commentary focused on the desire for
American citizenship, the first-class Ebony
Repertory Theatre production of Lorraine
Hansberry's masterpiece about race in
America and Danai Gurira's startling story
of the personal and cultural effects of colonialism,
it's clear that the new season at
the Douglas adds up to a season of smart,
moving theatre.
"In addition, our DouglasPlus programming
continues to shine with fun,
new works by Rude Mechs and the
Burglars of Hamm."
"I am happy to point out that
CTG's New Play Production Program is in
full gear with three CTG-commissioned
works, 'The Convert' and 'The Behavior of
Broadus,' and the further development of
Rude Mechs' work on 'I've Never Been So
Happy' through a CTG Completion
Commission. Part of our mandate is to
form partnerships with L.A. theatre companies,
and it's of particular pleasure to
present the important work of Ebony
Repertory Theatre.
"The Night Watcher"
Charlayne Woodard returns to CTG with
her dynamic new work, "The Night
Watcher," November 17 through
December 18, 2011. The opening is set
for November 20.
"The Night Watcher" is written
and performed by Woodard.
A best friend, advisor, confidant
and sage to the many young people for
whom she is an auntie or a godmother,
Charlayne Woodard pays homage in "The
Night Watcher" to the life-enhancing intimacy
that can exist between children and
the loving extended family of "other" adults
who are not related.
"Raisin in the Sun"
The critically-acclaimed Ebony Repertory
Theatre production of Lorraine
Hansberry's American classic "A Raisin in
the Sun" will open the New Year at the Kirk
Douglas Theatre, January 19 through
February 19, 2012. Opening night is set
for January 22.
Phylicia Rashad will reprise her
direction of the play that Frank Rich of The
New York Times said (in 1983) ". . .
changed American theatre forever."
Set in the 1950s, "A Raisin in the
Sun" portrays an African-American family
and its pursuit of a better life while facing
the obstacles of conflicting aspirations,
betrayal and racism. Central to the story is
a $10,000 life insurance payment that
symbolizes freedom in various ways to
each family member, including the possibility
of buying the family's first house,
located at 406 Clybourne St. in Chicago.
American Night: The Ballad of Juan
José"
The highly charged story of the
immigrant in America today is hilariously
upended in "American Night: The Ballad
of Juan José" by Richard Montoya.
Developed by Culture Clash and Jo
Bonney, directed by Bonney and a co-production
with La Jolla Playhouse,
"American Night" will be presented March
9 through April 1, 2012. The opening is set
BIRTHDAYS
for March 11.
"American Night" tells the story of
Juan José, a resident alien on the night
before his U.S. citizenship test. As Juan
crams for his exam he finds himself transported
through history into some of the
chapters left out of the history books.
Filtered through Culture Clash's unique
satirical sensibility, the American Dream
morphs into an exhaustion-fueled flight of
fantasy through the darker nooks and
crannies of Juan José's chosen homeland.
"The Convert"
Danai Gurira's powerful new play,
"The Convert," which was commissioned
by Center Theatre Group, will be presented
at the Kirk Douglas Theatre, April 17
through May 13, 2012. The opening is
scheduled for April 19. The world premiere
production of "The Convert," a coproduction
with McCarter Theatre Center
and Goodman Theatre, is directed by
Emily Mann.
Happy Birthday To Me, 2011
I announce with joy and glee,
That I’ve made it to ninety-three.
Of course, I’m lame, quite deaf, don’t drive;
But there’s no doubt, I’m still alive.
Although I’m pretty much confined
To home, from living, I have not resigned.
My care-ladies drive me to the doctor.
Do shopping, laundry, cook, and more.
They are each one a perfect gem;
I could not manage without them.
The while, I play bridge, do crosswords,
Write poems, and am not deterred
By my frailtes brought on by age.
In the drama of life, this is a stage.
Again I say with joy and glee,
I have made it to ninety-three.
de la Torre cont. from p. 3
“The Deputy Chief of Police is
in the process of evaluating the training
needs of all specialized assignments, including
the Audit and Inspection Unit, to
ensure personnel attend training specific to
their specialized duties prior to or as soon
as practicable upon assignment.”
The SMPD appears to be headed
in the right direction following an incident
that even the biggest opponents of de la
Torre have agreed was an overblown investigation
that was deeply flawed at best
and should not have taken place at all at
worst. However, the real challenge will be
whether the SMPD can overcome its tarnished
reputation over this situation.
There is no doubt that the SMPD
continues to be a powerful force in this
city. It is nearly impossible to win a seat
on the City Council without the support
of the police union. But the department’s
relationship with those whom the officers
and other employees interact with daily
can sometimes be full of tension. This is
a small city with too many police officers,
some residents say. The police officers are
rude and too inclined to harass residents,
making a situation out of nothing. And the
opinion is worse for many racial minorities,
including de la Torre.
It might never happen that the
police in this city will be well-loved by
residents that are determined to be distrustful
and suspicious of authority, especially
those authority figures who carry guns and
are legally allowed to use them. But incidents
like the de la Torre investigation do
not help the situation. The only way the
police department can prove that it has
overcome the incident is by showing, not
telling. And this will take time.
Of course, it would be less than
truthful to treat de la Torre as a man who
is blame-free. He often is quick to jump to
Graffiti cont.
from p. 3
of the Santa Monica City Council.
Neighborhood leaders and law enforcement
officials also blamed what they
call a glamorization of graffiti, reflected by
a new graffiti exhibit at the Sunset Marquis
Hotel in West Hollywood, even after an
earlier furor over a full-fledged graffiti exhibit
at the Museum of Contemporary Art.
“It’s because of the pop culture,”
said Ramona Findley, a Los Angeles police
detective who heads the department’s graffiti
task force. “It’s very interesting; with
your violent crime going down, it seems
like your mischievous crime is going up.
The art world has accepted it. People make
money from graffiti T-shirts. I was in Wal-
Mart on Easter, and I saw graffiti Easter
eggs.”
the race card when it comes to controversial
issues, whether it is related to crime or
schools—or both. And in his mind, the police
are always wrong. This is a simplistic
way of looking at things, and does little to
improve the situation in Santa Monica. The
police department has accepted criticism in
the aftermath of the de la Torre investigation,
and either begun to make changes or
promised to do them. Perhaps de la Torre
could do the same thing.
Santa Monica’s Skaggs Progresses
Toward Majors
Since a couple
of Santa Monica lads
are going through the
minor leagues in their
quest to reach the
majors, I’ve begun
a study of what happens
to premier baseball
prospects
I’ve found
that some reach the majors
with the team that
drafted them, others
are traded and become
major leaguers with
another team and some
never get to the majors
Last week I
traced the professional
career of Cody Decker,
the all-time career
home leader at Santa
Monica High. He’s now at Double-A San
Antonio, a farm team of the San Diego Padres,
who drafted him in the 22nd round in
2009
Decker is regarded as a borderline
major league prospect. His ability to hit
home runs is unquestioned but at 5-foot-11
he’s short for a first baseman. If he makes
the majors it could be as a Designated Hitter
in the American League
Today we take a look at Tyler Skaggs,
a 6-foot-4 lefthanded pitcher now in
his third season in the minors.
Skaggs was the 40th selection in
2009 by the Angels (a pick between the
first and second rounds) and has been traded
to the Arizona DiamondBacks for an
established major league starting pitcher,
Dan Haren
Actually, Skaggs was one of four
players the DiamondBacks acquired from
the Angels for Haren -- major league pitcher
Joe Saunders and three minor leaguers.
But according to sources with both teams,
Skaggs was the key to the deal.
Scouts project Skaggs as a major
league starting pitcher in a few years. What
he needed was strength and he’s gone from
185 pounds to 205.
“Being traded for a pitcher of
Haren’s ability changed my whole mindset
on baseball,” he said.
In Arizona it’s been written that
the DiamiondBacks didn’t get enough in
the trade.
“I want to go out and prove people
wrong,” said Skaggs.
After pitching no higher than Single
A with the Angels (Orem, Cedar Rapids,
South Bend and Visalia), Skaggs was
sent to Double-A Mobile by the Diamondbacks.
This month Skaggs turned 20. He
is the son of Debbie Skaggs, who retired
last season after coaching Samohi softball
for 23 years. Her last team won the CIF
championship.
In her final few seasons Debbie
coached Samohi games while getting re-
ports from friends who
were watching Tyler
pitch, sometimes on an
adjoining diamond.
Several draft
projections had Tyler
being chosen eighth
or ninth, which would
have resulted in a signing
bonus in the vicinity
of $4 million.
Instead he sprained an
ankle, couldn’t pitch
for Samohi for a month
and dropped to 40th.
The bonus became $1
million.
My memories
are vivid of attending
Samohi games that season
and watching several
dozen major league
scouts with radar guns crowding in behind
the backstop to measure Tyler’s pitches.
The scouts liked his fastball,
weren’t sure about his curve and agreed he
needed another pitch.
The maturing process is now
underway and he’s drawn comparisons
to another tall lefthanded starting pitcher,
Barry Zito. Others compare Skaggs to Cole
Hamels and Chuck Finley
Eddie Bane was the Angels’ scout
who selected Skaggs. Bane, now with the
Detroit Tigers, says:
“When I was with the Angels it
killed me that we lost him.”
NBA Players Scatter To Other
Countries
The NBA lockout is beginning
to bring on new worries to club owners.
Their players are heading to foreign
countries. I see nothing wrong with
this choice because basketball is their profession
and if NBA teams won’t pay them
teams from other leagues will.
Kobe Bryant seems serious about
playing elsewhere.
At this writing a team
from Turkey appears
to be losing interest
but China is a strong
possibility because
Bryant is extremely
popular there.
Pau Gasol is leaning toward playing
for his native Spain in a September
tournament and perhaps
elsewhere too.
The Lakers can
only hope their star
players aren’t injured.
The players’
willingness to play
elsewhere increases the pressure on the
NBA to settle its current financial dispute
with the Players Association.
I’m intrigued by the choices players
have even when they aren’t being paid
by their NBA teams.
Jrue Holiday, the Philadelphia
76ers’ point guard from UCLA, attended
the Womens’ World Cup championship
soccer match in Germany because he’s dating
US player Lauren Cheney, who he met
at UCLA.
How did they meet? They were
watching a UCLA girls basketball game
a few years ago when another spectator
rushed up to Holiday and said, “Oh my
God, it’s Darren Collison. Can I have your
autograph?”
Holiday laughed and Cheney,
who was sitting nearby, said “you’re much
cuter than Darren Collison.”
It wasn’t much later when Holiday
and Cheney began dating.
As a first round NBA draft choice
Holiday achieved wealth. So if he doesn’t
play for awhile he can get by.
They all can
if the lockout is a
temporary thing.
I’ll be very
surprised if there
isn’t a 2011-12
NBA season. After
a few months when
the season would be
reduced to about 50
games, both sides
figure to get serious.Unfortunately,
this is the
path most negotiations
take as some
laid off team employees and frustrated fans
suffer the most.
Who’s going to cave in first?
That’s the question.

Bringing AT&T customers a stronger network faster.
Observer Newspaper • July 20 - 27, 2011 • Page 9
AT&T customers, including those who join us from T-Mobile, will see significant
service improvements from the merger. The addition of T-Mobile’s spectrum resources
and thousands of cell sites will quickly increase capacity and coverage, resulting in better
call reliability and data speeds.
Mobile data traffic on AT&T’s network has grown 8,000% over the last four years.
With tablets, cloud computing, and a new generation of bandwidth-hungry devices on
the horizon, demand is expected to increase an additional 8-10 times by 2015.
Integrating T-Mobile’s network resources, while continuing AT&T’s network investment,
is the surest, fastest, and most efficient way to meet this challenge.
Continued innovation for T-Mobile customers.
Through the integration with AT&T, T-Mobile customers can continue to enjoy innovative
technologies, devices, and services for many years to come. They will have the freedom
to keep their existing pricing plans and phones, and will benefit in the future with
expanded capabilities.
T-Mobile customers will also benefit from network enhancements — such as improved
coverage in remote regions and access to AT&T’s planned next generation networks.
Reaching more of California with LTE.
LTE technology is a super-fast way to connect to the Internet. The combination of AT&T
and T-Mobile will allow AT&T to expand its LTE wireless broadband network to cover over
98% of California residents. That means one million more people in California, many in small
towns and rural areas, will get access to LTE due to the merger.
Our customers will get a stronger network. The state will get a new choice for broadband.
And more of California will get access to a cutting-edge wireless network and all the
opportunities it brings.
FASTSIGNS® Owner Named
Culver Rotarian of the Year
Clint Ehlers, owner of the Culver
City FASTSIGNS® sign and graphics
center located at 5554 Sepulveda Blvd.,
has been named the Rotarian of the Year
by the Culver City Rotary Club.
A Rotarian of the Year is named
only if the outgoing club president chooses
to do so, although most do not. When
joining a Rotary Club, a person joins to
uphold the goal of "Service above Self"
and members take on different voluntary
positions within a club in an effort to give
back to their community. A Rotarian of the
Year is named when a member exceeds
the expectations placed on Rotarians.
"Every once in a while, a member
goes above and beyond their position.
That person quietly goes about helping
wherever they can, contributing not just
monetarily but in enthusiasm and handson
participation. That is Clint," explained
Linda Black, president of the Culver City
Clint Ehlers
Rotary Club from 2010 to 2011. "He is
always willing to help, quick to volunteer and amazing in his support. He truly exemplifies
the highest example of 'Service above Self'. Clint just did things, without even being
asked, that added so much to our club. He made us better."
Ehlers was honored on June 25 at the Presidential Demotion Party, an event
in which a Rotary Club's past president steps down and a new president is welcomed.
Since opening the Culver City FASTSIGNS center in 2007, Ehlers has been involved
with several organizations, including the Culver City and Santa Monica Chambers of
Commerce. This year marks the second year that Ehlers will be serving as the Rotary
Club's treasurer.
"It means a great deal to be recognized with this honor and I am both surprised
and humbled to receive it," said Ehlers. "Ever since joining the Culver City Rotary Club,
I have really enjoyed all of the projects that the club has taken part in, such as supporting
the Culver City school district and the Culver City YMCA. We are even partnering
with the Rotary Club in Pune, India in order to rebuild schools and water wells, train
teachers, and provide school supplies in one of the poorest areas of the city."
"In a time when community service is often looked upon as drudgery, when
'volunteerism' is often talked about but rarely practiced, Culver City is lucky to have Clint
as an example of someone who both 'talks the talk' and 'walks the walk'," said Andrew
Weissman, former mayor of Culver City and fellow Culver City Rotarian. "In the various
projects Clint and I have worked together, he is unfailingly friendly, engaged and has an
attitude that suggests to me that he approaches projects as opportunities to help and
not as obligations to be fulfilled. We could only hope to have more community-minded
people like Clint in Culver City."
Letters To The
Editor
Dear Editor;
Although I enthusiastically support the concessions made by PXP in the oil
field settlement, I can't help wonder what took so long considering that I believe PXP
was willing to make the same concessions over two years ago before lawsuits were
filed.
The filing of lawsuits ended hopes of open and confidential dialogue that could
have resolved a lot of the issues. As a consequence, the parties had to lawyer up and
let the lawyers make tons of money. Culver City alone has spent from $1.2-1.8 million
dollars on lawyers and consultants suing PXP. Think how much that money could have
been used to help the city if it weren't spent on the lawyers. None of the city council
members even approached PXP directly to have an open dialogue. They were
lawyered up and had to work through the city attorney who had an openly hostile and
biased attitude toward PXP.
I was defamed and attacked viciously and unmercifully in the papers and blogs by faked
named individuals for calling for dialogue and not lawsuits in the oil field dispute. It did
not matter that my intent was to raise oil royalties to help fund our schools.
Now that there appears to be a settlement, I think the city should raise the royalty
rate it gets from PXP from an estimated 1.2% to at least 6%.
In addition, I would like to advocate that there be a statewide progressive windfall profits
tax against all the oil companies, with the added revenues being allocated to our
schools.
The Culver City Council and Culver City School Board can pass a resolution to
endorse a progressive windfall profits tax on oil companies, with the money going to our
schools. The windfall profits tax would capture a share of the profits over the cost of
producing a barrel of oil.
I do share the same long term view of many Culver City residents that when
the oil fields peter out that the land will be converted to a park and thus end the oil question
once and for all.
New El Marino Park Playground Opens
The City of Culver City announces that after much community anticipation, the
new El Marino Park Playground improvements are complete, and the park was opened
to the public on the 4th of July Holiday weekend.
All new equipment is Americans with Disabilities Act compliant and designed
for the enjoyment of children ages 5 to 12.
This playground project achieved the City's three primary goals. Firstly, the
equipment, manufactured by Landscape Structures in partnership with Global Relief,
uses all sustainable products and processes, thereby offsetting its carbon footprint at
the manufacturing level. Secondly, the playground is completely accessible, from the
Engineered Wood Fibar surfacing to the equipment itself, offering play opportunities to
children of all physical abilities. And, finally, the equipment offers a completely kinetic
and interactive play experience.
"The Department's philosophy and objectives of creating a totally challenging
play experience, both physically and mentally, has been achieved in this project. Just
watch the children on this playground, and you will see," stated Dan Hernandez, Parks,
Recreation and Community Services Director. Every piece of equipment either moves,
swivels, or tests a child's agility, balance, climbing, hanging and jumping ability. The
equipment also provides a certain element of risk (even if it is only implied).
Culver City Rainwater Harvesting
Program Available
The City of Culver City and the Santa Monica Bay Restoration Foundation are
working together on a city-wide rainwater harvesting program.
SMBRF is providing the funding and technical expertise for the Culver City
Rainwater Harvesting Program , offering all Culver City residents and commercial properties
the opportunity to receive a professionally-installed rain barrel for a fraction of the
retail price.
Rainwater harvesting involves capturing rainwater from a roof (or other surface)
and putting it to use - watering lawns and gardens, for example. The goal of Culver City
and SMBRF is to install 500 rain barrels during the first year.
The first 500 Culver City residents to sign up can take advantage of this opportunity
for a professionally installed rain barrel for a suggested donation of $40 to cover
material costs for the barrel, an estimated value of over $250. Interested residents and
business owners can fill out an application at www.CCrainwater.ballonawatershed.org.
"This Program will serve as a benchmark for green cities by allowing residents
to help clean up Santa Monica Bay and conserve precious water," said Micheál O'Leary,
Culver City Mayor and early supporter of the Rainwater Harvesting Program.
Culver Reaches Tournament Final, Loses
By Melanie Trup
Special to the Observer
The Culver City High football team took on a powerhouse field at the Claremont
Passing Tournament this past weekend.
In a field that included Los Angeles Cathedral, the Centaurs, and Burroughs of
Ridgecrest among many other strong teams, Culver City advanced to the second day
of the tournament with a record of 4-0. Culver City was one of four teams to advance
with an undefeated record.
In the pool play opener against Cathedral, a team that now features former
Centaur Zakee Johnson, Culver City won, 38-16 as quarterback Lukas O'Connor threw
six touchdowns and two interceptions.
Reggie House, Ben Matsushita, Kevin Porche, Alex Jackson, and Jimmy
Haywood each had touchdown receptions. Anthony Luckett made a great play on a
pass from the Cathedral QB by leaping for an interception. .
In game two against Burroughs the defense, as it has many times in summer
competition, starred in a 32-8 victory. After O'Connor threw a touchdown to Jackson on
the first play of the contest, the defense stepped up, holding the Burros scoreless on five
straight possessions.
Burroughs was able to score on its final offensive play..
In the third game against St. Francis (of La Canada), O'Connor threw six more
touchdowns to four different receivers in a 36-18 win. (Porche caught the first two and
Sydney Dorsey, Reggie House and Michael Horchin also had receptions.
It was in this game that highly touted receiver Julius Wilson saw extended playing time
for the first time this summer. Wilson, who also plays basketball for Culver City, had suffered
an ankle injury which rendered him unable to play.
In the fourth and final game of pool play the Centaurs faced off against
Etiwanda in a hotly contested battle of undefeated teams. The Eagles quarterback,
according to long time assistant coach Greg Goodyear was, "an incredible athlete, he
was a wrestler and threw a pretty nice ball and also threw it fairly hard."
In the first defensive series, Ronald Jones intercepted a pass. Jackson starred
for the offense, pulling in five of O'Connor's six touchdown passes. Jimmy Heywood
caught the sixth and final ball in what was a see-saw battle that eventually ended up with
Culver City winning, 40-30.
In pool play, Villa Park, Crespi, Claremont and Culver City came out with
unblemished records of 4-0. With their explosive offense and solid defense, the
Centaurs were given the top seed entering tournament play.
In the opener against Chino Hills, RJ Jones started off another game with an
interception and then O'Connor connected with House for a touchdown. The defense
held Chino Hills scoreless and then Jackson caught a touchdown pass. Yamen Sanders
then picked off a pass and O'Connor would connect with Dorsey for another touchdown.
It was when the score was 22-0 that the Huskies would find a rhythm, scoring
twice to make it 22-12. Heywood's touchdown would extend the Centaur lead to 28-12,
and Jones' interception would provide the winning margin of 30-18.
In a familiar scenario, the Centaurs found themselves facing off against Charter
Oak in the tournament quarterfinal and lost, 34-26.
Culver City was scoreless on its opening drive and then Charter Oak scored on
three possessions, jumping out to a 20-6 lead.
Anthony Luckett had an interception and after the Chargers were unable to
score, O'Connor connected with Jackson to bring the deficit to 20-14.
Charter Oak answered back yet again to make it 26-14. This game was very
spirited as the two teams had faced off in the Air Assault Tournament at Bonita High a
few weeks before. Horchin put another touchdown on the board to make it 26-32, and
then the defense held.
With a minute left the Centaur offense drove down the field and had two plays
to win. The first attempt fell incomplete and on the final play O'Connor threw an interception.
NBA Players Scatter To Other Countries
The NBA lockout is beginning to bring on new
worries to club owners.
Their players are heading to foreign countries. I
see nothing wrong with this choice because basketball
is their profession and if NBA teams won't pay them
teams from other leagues will.
Kobe Bryant seems serious about playing elsewhere.
At this writing a team from Turkey appears to be
losing interest but China is a strong possibility because
Bryant is extremely popular there.
Pau Gasol is leaning toward playing for his native
Spain in a September tournament and perhaps elsewhere
too.
Mitch Chortkoff
The Lakers can only hope their star players aren't
injured.
The players' willingness to play elsewhere increases the pressure on the
NBA to settle its current financial dispute with the Players Association.
I'm intrigued by the choices players have even when they aren't being paid
by their NBA teams.
Jrue Holiday, the Philadelphia 76ers' point guard from UCLA, attended the
Womens' World Cup championship soccer match in Germany because he's dating
US player Lauren Cheney, who he met at UCLA.
Wide-receiver Alex Jackson scores on a 31-yard touchdown pass from
Jordan Arrington. Jackson also caught a 56-yard touchdown in Culver's
easy win 44-0 over Morningside.
Lakers Scheduled
To Open November 1
If the NBA settles its labor dispute the Lakers will open their season on
November 1 at home against the Oklahoma Thunder.
The NBA released the news this week by saying the schedule applies only
if the owners and players settle their dispute, which currentlt includes a lockout.
The Lakers' opening game will be nationally televised on TNT. In the first
game that night the Dallas Mavericks will be featured and will receive their championship
rings.
How did they meet? They were watching
a UCLA girls basketball game a few years
ago when another spectator rushed up to
Holiday and said, "Oh my God, it's Darren
Collison. Can I have your autograph?"
Holiday laughed and Cheney, who
was sitting nearby, said "you're much cuter
than Darren Collison."
It wasn't much later when Holiday and
Cheney began dating.
As a first round NBA draft choice
Holiday achieved wealth. So if he doesn't play
for awhile he can get by.
They all can if the lockout is a temporary
thing.
I'll be very surprised if there isn't a
2011-12 NBA season. After a few months Pau Gasol
when the season would be reduced to about
50 games, both sides figure to get serious.
Unfortunately, this is the path most negotiations take as some laid off team
employees and frustrated fans suffer the most.
Who's going to cave in first? That's the question.

When a book is on the Best Seller List for
120 weeks (after initially being rejected by
publishers for years) and then gets adapted
as a film, one should sit up and take notice.
When the story involves a fresh and different
point of view and a very sorrowful and moving
subject, the Holocaust, one should sit up
and take notice. When the film stars Kristin
Scott Thomas, one MUST get to the theater
as quickly as possible. Such is the case with
SARAH'S KEY. With a book written by bestselling
author, Tatiana de Rosnay, and
adapted and directed for the screen by
Gilles Paquet-Brenner, SARAH'S KEY is a
visually and emotionally powerful film that
eloquently spans the decades, transfixing
one to the fictional story of American journalist
Julia Jarmond and her quest to uncover
the truth about a little girl named Sarah and
the events that transpired in the 1942 Vel'
d'Hiv Roundup in France. Artfully intertwining
Julia's life with Sarah's story, past and
present collide with electrifying, heartpounding
emotion.
Julia Jarmond is a respected American al
journalist who has made a life for herself in
Paris as a writer for a high profile magazine.
With the 60th anniversary of the Vel' d'Hiv
Roundup approaching, she is assigned to
cover the event and its history. [The facts of
Vel d'Hiv are factually presented in the film.]
The time was July 16, 1942 in Occupied
France. Not the Nazis, but the French
Police, performed their own "cleansing" raid
in the heart of Paris, and rounded up all the
Jewish citizens in the City, herding them like
cattle to the great Velodrome d'Hiver.
Mothers, fathers, aunts, uncles, brothers,
sisters, grandparents and children - no one
was exempt. For days, they were held like
prisoners in the Velodrome. No food. No
water. No toilet facilities. Perhaps the best
visual of the situation is to analogize it to
New Orleans during Hurricane Katrina. But
unlike the victims of Katrina, for these people
help would never come. They were all
shipped off to Nazi concentration camps
where, as history has shown us, their fates
were all but sealed. Husbands separated
from wives. Children separated from their
mothers. Many never came back. Few survived.
And for still others, it was as if they
disappeared from the world. For Julia
Jarmond, one of those that seemingly disappeared
without a trace was Sarah
Starzynsky...and her story began in the childhood
home of Julia's husband.
Bertrand Tezac is a less than loving sympathetic
husband. A cold business oriented
architect through and through, although he
provides a good life for his wife Julia and
their 11 year old daughter, work is his life and
family is second. Since 1942 his family has
owned an apartment in the Marais district of
Paris and now, having been vacant for a
number of years, he has decided to renovate
the apartment and make it their new
home.
While Bertrand is involved with the renovation
and other business matters, Julia delves
ever deeper into researching her story on
Vel' d'Hiv. Part of that research reveals that
Bertrand's family took over their now apartment
in July 1942 after the family residing
there was taken away to Vel' d'Hiv. With this
personal connection to her story, Julia digs
deeper, determined to learn what has
become of the family that was taken away.
To Julia, this is their home and it should be
returned to any heirs; if she can find any.
Turning to 1942, we meet Sarah and her
family. On that fateful day in July, she fears
for her 4 year old brother Michel and in an
effort to protect him, hides him in a secret
closet behind the wall in their bedroom.
Assured by her mother they will return home
soon, Sarah locks Michel in the
closet, taking the key with her.
But on being locked in the
Velodrome herself, Sarah realizes
that she will not be returning
home and tells her parents
about Michel. Frantic, Sarah is
desperate to save her little
brother but her pleas fall on deaf
ears. Making matters worse,
she is separated from her parents
and shipped by train to a
camp out in the country. Still
determined to save Michel,
Sarah plans a desperate
escape.
Segueing between the past and
present, as Julia digs for every
bit of information she can find on
Sarah and her family, we see
Sarah's parallel life unfold. With
the clock ticking for each, history
soon collides with emotional
fury.
Is there nothing that Kristin Scott Thomas
can't do? As Julia, she runs the gamut from
girlish and coquettish to strong and independent
to touching and unsure. Filled with
conviction of heart and soul, Scott-Thomas
is mesmerizing in her most absorbing performance
since "I've Loved You So Long."
Harnessing restraint like an emotional volcano
ready to erupt, Scott-Thomas knows
the exact climactic moment to let herself go,
drawing a willing audience deeper into the
heart and pain of Julia. Outstanding.
But the real joy of SARAH'S KEY is Sarah
herself - Melusine Mayance. Mesmerizing.
Magical. Mayance transports you to 1942
Paris. She has the most soulful eyes and
expressiveness. Her performance is heartbreakingly
real to the point of giving one
goosebumps just watching her. If there is a
dark horse in this year's Oscar race, it's
Melusine Mayance.
And the supporting cast is equally impressive,
starting with Aidan Quinn as William
Rainsferd, an American heir of Sarah
Strazynski. As the subplot of Rainsferd
develops, Quinn just stuns with his soft-spoken
emotional range, not to mention those
blue blue eyes. And his chemistry with
Scott-Thomas is undeniable. Notable is also
Niels Arestrup who plays an elderly French
farmer named Jules Defaure. Instrumental
in Sarah's story, Arestrup, together with
Dominique Frot as Jules' wife Genevieve,
add a new layer of emotional complexity and
warmth. Particularly stirring is Michel
Duchaussoy as Julia's father-in-law, Edourd
Tezac. Forceful as the family patriarch,
Duchaussoy pulls no punches and bares his
soul in one highly emotional pivotal scene.
Written and directed by Gilles Paquet-
Brenner, I have to say that SARAH'S KEY is
one of the most faithful book to screen adaptations
I have seen. Never once does he
compromise the emotional integrity of the
novel nor does he rely on cheap melodrama
to elicit emotion on film. Although there are a
few modifications from the novel (most
notably, the ending), "It was not that difficult
an adaptation because it's a very well plotted
book. Adaptations are very difficult when
you like the atmosphere, you like the characters,
but you have no plot." With
SARAH'S KEY, " you keep the plot, all the
rich tones that the book has, good characters
and good structure. Good structure was
the real challenge with the book because
dealing with two periods of times can be
confusing for the audience, so the challenge
was to keep that very fluid so that the audience
knows in a second what period of time
there were in. That's something we worked
very hard on writing the screenplay.
SARAH'S KEY
debbie lynn elias
Working on the transitions, so that we can
find that balance."
Aiding in the time transitions are the distinct
visual palettes created by Paquet-Brenner
and his cinematographer Pascal Rideo.
Looking at the past, the pair created a
warmer, more sepia-toned visual, while for
the present and Julia's world, a brighter,
clear, sharper look. "You have the cinematography
but you also have to have the
right shots. For 1942, it's hand-held [camera]
and short lenses; short lenses are
important because I wanted 1942 to be very
personal so that people could basically
experience the time." Paquet-Brenner
accomplished this goal beautifully as one
feels as if they are right in the Velodrome
with Sarah. "I was obsessed with that." You
can almost feel the swelter, feel the beads of
sweat flopping off of people, smell the
stench or urine and feces and unclean bodies.
A very powerful sensory experience is
achieved. For Julia's world, Paquet-Brenner
drew inspiration from the lensing in "Klute."
Calling for "very classical filmmaking. Not
too many shots. The only thing I wanted to
underline with Julia...to see her alone. I
wanted to insist on her loneliness in her
quest." Very important to Julia's character,
this quest that she is on is such a solitary
journey. She
may have her
co-workers
along for the
story, but even
they are not that
taken with the
story or the story
of Sarah.
Paquet-Brenner
truly captures
the solitude and
loneliness of
both Julia and
Sarah. Their
respective emotional
isolation is
beautifully paralleled
and presented.
"I'm very
happy that you
mention that
because very
very few people
notice and
respond to that.
I always felt that
there was a way
that we could
reach a connection
between the
two of them."
Aiding in this
emotional
palette is the
smoother, seamless editing of Herve
Schneid. Also noteworthy are the camera
angles themselves which, in 1942, retain the
point of view and angular perspective of an
11 year old. "It's through Sarah's eyes that
we see all this." Adding to the historical gravitas,
SARAH'S KEY is the first film to lens at
the Holocaust Memorial in Paris.
Francoise Dupertui's production design is
superb as he constructs two distinct worlds,
each as believable and immersive as the
next.
Enhancing the visual and emotional complexities
of SARAH'S KEY is an exquisitely
rich score by Max Richter. So definitive as to
each of the characters and pivotal scenes,
the music carries one along the journey, lifting
the spirit and filling it with life and hope.
Unlock a magical movie experience this
weekend with SARAH'S KEY.
BEAT THE HEAT; GO ONLINE
By Essie Landry
Social Security Public Affairs Specialist in West Los Angeles
If the dog days of summer have you turning up the air conditioning or fan, here's
a hot tip to keep cool. When the time comes to apply for your Medicare benefits, don't
worry about trudging into the heat and making your way in the blazing sun to a Social
Security office. Just pour yourself a tall glass of iced tea, sit back in the comfort of your
home or office, and go to www.socialsecurity.gov.
Winter, spring, summer, or fall, all you have to do is go online. You can use our
online application to sign up for Medicare, even if you are not ready to retire. It takes less
than 10 minutes.
Keep in mind that if you're applying to start receiving Social Security benefits at
age 65 or are already receiving benefits, your enrollment in Medicare is automatic and
no additional application is needed. However, if you're within four months of your 65th
birthday and you plan to delay your retirement benefits, you should consider applying
for Medicare.
Applying for Medicare on the Internet is convenient, quick, and easy. There's
no need to drive to a local Social Security office or wait for an appointment with a Social
Security representative. In most cases, once your application is submitted electronically,
you're done. There are no forms to sign and usually no documentation is required.
Social Security will process your application and contact you if we need more information.
Once we process your application, you'll receive your Medicare card in the mail.
For more information about applying for Medicare only and delaying retirement benefits,
read our Retirement Planner page: Applying for Medicare Online at www.socialsecurity.gov/retire2/justmedicare.htm.
Once you've read over the information and reviewed your situation, you can
make a clear decision on whether the time is right for you to apply for Medicare. When
you're ready to apply, here's exactly what you need to do:
" Go online to www.socialsecurity.gov and select "Apply for Medicare;"
" Go through a series of questions that will help you consider either filing for
retirement and Medicare benefits or only filing for Medicare;
" Use the "More Info" links if you need more information;
" Answer questions about current benefits you may be receiving, such as
Medicaid or other health insurance; and
WLA College Offers Paralegal Info Session
Unlike some career colleges, West Los Angeles College offers a fully accredited,
ABA-Approved Paralegal program at an affordable price. Classes are taught by
current and former attorneys, judges and paralegals. Part-time and full-time evening
options are available.
An information session will be held at the college, Building A9 on Saturday, July
23 from 10 am to 11 am. There is no cost.
A paralegal is employed or retained by a lawyer, law office, corporation, governmental
agency or other entity and performs specifically delegated substantive legal
work for which a lawyer is responsible. Paralegals gather information and investigate
facts, research laws relevant to a case, compile reports, prepare legal documents and
more depending on the employer. Nationally, salaries typically range from $30,000 to
$63,000. In Los Angeles, salaries tend toward the higher end of this range or above.
According to Careeroverview.com, job growth for paralegals is expected to continue be
faster than average for other careers.
"We hold these information sessions for prospective students so that they can
learn more about our program and the career path," explained Dr. Vanita Nicholas,
Director of WLAC's Paralegal Studies Program. "It's a no pressure environment. You
don't need to make any commitments. We don't market to you for months afterwards.
That's what is nice about being in a community college setting."
