The Democratic Club of Culver City endorsed 

Christopher Armenta and Andy Weissman for the Culver City 

Council at its meeting last Wednesday night at Veterans 

Auditorium. 

However, the event also was successful for candidate 

Jeff Cooper. Outgoing Culver City Mayor Alan Corlin rose to 

announce to the large audience that he is endorsing Cooper, 

who had previously gained the endorsements of Councilman 

Scott Malsin and Culver City Treasurer Crystal Alexander.

It's 80th 

On March 3, Culver CityBus is commemorating its 80th 

Anniversary of providing safe, efficient and affordable public transit to the 

residents of Culver City and the surrounding communities. 

Culver CityBus has carried approximately 229 million passengers 

during the past 80 years of service which has contributed greatly to the 

reduction of traffic, air congestion, and pollution. To celebrate, Culver 

CityBus has designated March 3, 2008 as "Free Fare Day." Approximately 

20,000 passengers are expected to ride Culver CityBus on this day. 

Culver CityBus is California's second oldest municipally owned 

transit system, with a fleet wholly comprised of compressed natural gas 

(CNG) buses. Culver CityBus operates seven routes, serving approximately 

5.8 million passengers annually with a service area encompassing 

25.5 square miles, which includes the Westside communities of Venice, 

Westchester, Westwood, West Los Angeles, Palms, Marina del Rey, 

Rancho Park, Mar Vista, Century City, and Culver City.

Royal Swim 

Team Does Well 

The Royal Swim Team, located in the Culver 

City Plunge, participated in the Southern California 

Swimming Spring Junior Olympic championships 

February 1-3 and February 8-10 at Belmont Shores, 

Long Beach. 

Shane Chung, Marena Dieden and Michael 

Dozal all received medals (finishing in the top eight) and 

the 13-14 boys relay team of Sammy Wolfson, Jamie 

Kuprenas, Chung and Dozal achieved five all-American 

times with a third, fourth, two fifths and a seventh place. 

Dieden and Chung each received two medals 

and Dozal, a Culver City High student, made the finals 

in five events, including a second place in the 200 

breaststroke.

Maybe it was an overzealous 

staff report or just a concern after the city 

booted the Sister City Committee as an 

official city organization, but whatever the 

reason everyone from the Fiesta 

LaBallona Committee to the Disabled 

American Veterans (DAV) showed up at 

the City Council meeting Tuesday night 

to convince the council of the worthiness 

of their organizations to the city. 

Long gone are the days of former 

Human Services Director Syd 

Kronenthal, who believed the Veterans 

Auditorium should be the place where 

community groups could meet at no 

charge. The city is now wrestling with 

matters of liability insurance and what 

activities the groups are using the facility 

and other city venues for. 

The council implemented a sixcategory 

chart for the multitude of organizations. 

The divergent groups include 

CERT, Friends of the Culver City Library, 

Culver City Car Show, Culver City Rock 

and Mineral Club, various twelve-step 

groups (AA, CA, NA) and many others. 

Ronnie Jayne, Chair of the 2008 

Fiesta LaBallona Committee, spoke of 

the need to clarify the status of the fiesta 

as the event requires many months of 

planning. "We need to move forward with 

Fiesta 2008." She said the fiesta should 

be "considered a city event" and treated 

as an "official city committee." She went 

on to add that forming a charitable corporation 

as the Sister City Committee was 

required to do would not work for the fiesta, 

"I'm not interested in forming or running 

a charitable organization." 

The 2007 chair of the event 

Laura Stuart spoke about how the "Fiesta 

celebrates Culver City," and is not run as 

a profit making event. 

Included in this category is the 

Martin Luther King Day Committee. 

Of concern to the Fiesta was the 

"seed" money required to produce the 

event and their ability to enter into contracts 

with performers, vendors and suppliers 

while the status of the committee 

was being decided. City Manager Jerry 

Fulwood responded that he could have a 

motion before council next week to make 

the $55,000 the fiesta had in holdover 

earnings available and that he could 

access city reserves to provide necessary 

funding.

Is Saturday 

The Culver City High School Booster Club presents its annual "Casino Night" 

fundraiser Saturday at Vets Auditorium from 7p.m. to 11. The money raised goes 

toward Culver High clubs and athletics. 

"We encourage all Centaur parents, alumni, and fans to come out and have a 

good time playing blackjack, craps, and roulette," said Culver sports announcer/statistician 

Greg Dynabursky. "We're hoping for a good turnout; I'd like to see about 200 

guests attend this event." 

Gambling chips will be exchanged for raffle tickets. There will be several 

prizes as well as a silent auction and RamFunkshus will provide music entertainment. 

Tickets are $25/person or $40/couple. The booster club is also looking for individuals

"Carnage Extends at 

Actors' Gang 

"Carnage, A Comedy," The Actors' Gang's satire about televangelism and the 

state of religion in America, co-written by Adam Simon and Tim Robbins, has extended

Boy Scouts Honor

Former Culver City Mayor Richard Marcus has received the Silver 

Beaver Award from the Boy Scouts Of America Western Los Angeles County 

Council. 

The award is in recognition of noteworthy service of exceptional 

character to youth in the area. It is the highest honor a council can award to 

its volunteers.

King Committees should remain under the 

city and while the council wouldn't appoint 

the members to the committee they would 

need to ratify the members and officers. 

By far the largest contingent was 

from the Disabled American Veterans who 

meet in the Veterans Memorial building for 

three hours, once a month. A dozen 

speakers, disabled veterans from World 

War II, Korea and Vietnam, spoke about 

the group with the most poignant statement 

being "how can you charge veterans 

to meet in a veteran's memorial building." 

Several members of the council clarified 

that it was not their intention charge the 

Veterans for use of the facility. 

Mayor Alan Corlin remarked that 

it doesn't "make much sense to charge a 

veterans group in a veterans building." He 

went on to suggest that veteran's organizations 

be allowed to use the AMVET's 

building or the National Guard Armory. 

Both buildings are leased to the respective 

organizations and are not generally open 

to other organizations. He went on to talk 

about the benefits to the community of 

these organizations noting that the Culver 

City Garden Club might have their rent go 

from $1,000 per year to $7,400. 

Tom Supple from the Culver City 

Scholarship Committee spoke to the issue 

of fees, "we used the Rotuduna Room at 

Vet's for many years. We take in $1,000 

and grant $1,000 in scholarships. We 

have no income. So we had to leave Vet's 

but we would like to come back." 

The motion by Councilmember 

Scott Malsin to adopt the new six-tiered 

structure met with a strong objection from 

Councilmember Carol Gross. She wanted 

to make sure the new rules did not lock in 

a fee structure and the fees would remain 

unchanged until the issue came back to 

the council. "How does the fee structure fit 

with the new policy,?" she asked. 

Councilmember Steve Rose shot 

back that the council would be subject to 

every group that was unhappy coming 

before the council, "they will come here 

and whine and whine and whine." 

The motion passed 4-1 with 

Gross in opposition. 

After delaying the vote from last 

week's meeting the council took up the 

issue of mixed-use projects. Mixed use 

would provide ground floor retail or commercial 

with residential units combined 

into the projects. 

Projects such as 9900 Culver 

Boulevard, and Washington/Centinela 

have substantially reduced density after 

protests by local residents and neighborhood 

associations, not to mention the disastrous 

project proposed by Champion 

Development for Sepulveda Boulevard 

between Jefferson and Sawtelle. The 

community outcry was unprecedented in 

the city. 

The 9900 project was particularly 

embarrassing for the city in that the Culver 

City Redevelopment Agency had to refund 

$500,000 of the purchase price to the 

developer after they required the developer 

to cut the density and cut the five story 

building down to three. 

The ordinance will reduce density 

to 35 units per acre with 50 units per acre 

being allowed with "community benefit." 

The plan also addresses lots that are partially 

in Culver City and partially in Los 

Angeles. Those lots would be allowed 

density up to 65 units per acre. The city 

has identified approximately 1,300 lots 

where mixed-use would be permitted with 

102 of these lots split between Culver City 

and Los Angeles. 

It would reduce building heights 

to 35 feet where they abut single-family 

residential areas and allow a step-up to 45 

and 56 feet on larger lots. 

The "community benefit" portion, 

which would allow an increase in density 

and would be based on the developers' 

willingness to provide the following: 

Streetscape improvements in the immediate 

commercial area. 

Public open space and "pocket parks." 

Metered public parking 

Green building construction 

Developments located within 1250 ft of a 

mass transit station 

Council may add additional benefits 

as they determine appropriate. 

Councilmembers were concerned 

about the financial viability of the 

projects and the economic costs verses 

the benefits. While residential projects cost 

the city more than they produce in taxes, 

commercial and industrial developments 

provide the city with positive revenues to 

fund city operations. 

It was noted that while the new 

upscale stores and restaurants in downtown 

have a PR value, the city gets very 

little revenue from them. At last week's 

meeting Rose remarked, "It's the 

Costcos, the Westfields, the car dealerships….that 

provide the money to run this 

city. These mixed-use projects are a little 

profitable, a little not profitable but don't 

generate a lot of money for the city." 

In the end as the 1 a.m. hour 

neared, a weary council passed the new 

ordinance, leaving veteran council watchers 

to ask, if we plan it will they come and 

build it? 

24 CCUSD Students 

Await Spelling Bee 

Twenty four of the best and brightest students in the Culver City Unified 

School District are getting ready to S-P-E-L-L their way to the top! 

On Monday four students from each of the district's five elementary schools 

and Culver City Middle School will compete in CCUSD's district-wide spelling bee at 

Robert Frost Auditorium, 4401 Elenda Street. 

The competition, sponsored by Westfield Fox Hills, will begin at 7 p.m. 

Admission is free, and the public is invited to attend. 

"Every year, millions of students participate in spelling competitions around 

the country," said Diane Fiello. "We are excited that we will be having a districtwide 

spelling bee right here in Culver City. We are hopeful that it will be broadcast on local 

television to showcase all of our talented students." 

The winner of the CCUSD Spelling Bee will advance to the county-wide competition 

in Alhambra on March 19. 

In addition, the winner of the CCUSD competition will receive a $250 savings 

bond, courtesy of Westfield Fox Hills. Second- and third-place finishers will also 

receive savings bonds, and every participant will receive a certificate. 

All 4th, 5th and 6th-grade students throughout the district will have an opportunity 

to compete at the school level first, and the top four spellers will advance to the 

district-wide competition on February 25. 

This is the third year that the Los Angeles County Office of Education will hold 

its Los Angeles County Spelling Bee. The first National Spelling Bee was launched by 

the Louisville, Kentucky, Courier-Journal in 1925. With competitions, cash prizes, and 

a trip to the nation's capital, the Bee hoped to stimulate "general interest among pupils 

in a dull subject." 

THE MARKETPLACE

Dear Editor, 

We have been told that Culver 

City is having fiscal problems. I believe 

that it is grossly unfair and outrageous 

that the City Manager and his two 

assistants have been given raises of 40 

to 45 thousand dollars each. 

This is being done at a time 

when all Culver City employees are 

being asked to tighten their belts and 

take on additional duties and workloads. 

The citizens of Culver City are 

going to have to pay for those raises 

even though we are being told that the 

city has to cur back on programs. 

Not only will these outrageous 

raises - unless they are rescinded -cost 

us close to $150,000 each year 

they are employed, but the Culver City 

citizens will probably be responsible for 

millions more when they retire. This 

waste of Culver City tax dollars - which 

we are told we don't have - needs to be 

rescinded and stopped. 

Culver City is a great city and 

we want to keep it that way by treating 

all the people who work for our city in a 

fair and equitable manner.

Dear Editor, 

Some of your local citizens may 

have noticed a small protest at the City 

of Angels Veterinary Specialty Center in 

Culver City recently and are wondering 

what it is about. 

My dog Clooney was very 

badly misdiagnosed there after 

$8,200.00 worth of tests and hospitalization. 

Dr. Perlis ignored numerous 

(15) clinical and definitive signs of 

Clooney's illness. Clooney's referring 

veterinarian Dr. Tom Talbot, asked Dr. 

Mills (lead veterinarian at City of 

Angels)for help when Clooney's condition 

worsened. Dr. Mills said he would 

go over Clooney's case with Dr. Perlis 

and and come up with a game plan and 

call Dr. Talbot and myself back. They 

never called back. 

Dr. Mills at that point surely recognized 

that Clooney had been badly 

misdiagnosed and the medication Dr. 

Perlis put him on had destroyed his 

immune system and he would be 

unable to fight off the disease he did 

have. After numerous unreturned calls 

to their facility, I took Clooney to UC 

Davis spending another $18,730.00 to 

save his life. 

After some improvement and 

then going badly downhill Clooney was

THE CITY OF CULVER CITY TO CONSIDER THE APPROVAL 

OF THE PUBLIC HOUSING AGENCY ANNUAL PLAN 2008 

The City Council of the City of Culver City Council hereby gives notice that the 

Section 8 Housing Choice Voucher Program (HCVP) Public Housing Agency (PHA) 

Annual Plan (2008), will be considered for approval at a public hearing by the City of 

Culver City Council on Monday, April 14, 2008, at 7:00 p.m., or as soon thereafter as 

the matter may be heard, in the Mike Balkman Council Chambers at 9770 Culver 

Boulevard, Culver City, California. The purpose of the public hearing is to obtain the 

views of citizens, service providers, participants, and interested individuals regarding 

the development of the Annual Plan (2008). This is in accordance with 24 Code of 

Federal Regulations, Part 903 et seq., as published by the U.S. Department of 

Housing and Urban Development (HUD) on December 22, 2000, in the Federal 

Register, Public and Indian Housing (PIH) Notice 2000-43, and the Quality Housing 

and Work Responsibility Act of 1998. 

The PHA Annual Plan describes the immediate operations, assesses housing assistance 

needs, housing stock conditions, and rental housing subsidy needs of lower 

income households for the upcoming fiscal year. 

Upon approval by the City Council, the Annual Plan (2008) will be submitted to HUD 

to ensure the City will continue to receive federal funds that benefit very low income 

individuals and households from the Section 8 HCVP. Section 8 HCVP subsidies will 

be contingent upon the availability of funding to the City from HUD, as well as, the 

preparation and submittal to HUD of the Annual Plan. 

ALL INTERESTED AGENCIES, GROUPS, OR INDIVIDUALS who wish to be heard 

on this matter are invited to attend this public hearing and speak to the City Council 

at the time and place stated. The City Council will consider approval of the Annual 

Plan (2008) at the public hearing after receiving testimony, oral or written.

Dear Editor, 

I have been listening to the political 

campaigns, both Presidential and City 

Council, for weeks now. I am amazed at 

how much they talk and how little they 

say. They speak in little catch phrases 

that people make into what they want. 

The biggest nothing that has been said 

recently is that the candidate is for 

change. What does that mean? Repeal 

the tax cuts. That is a change. Make the 

tax cuts permanent. That is a change. 

Seal the borders. That is a change. Open 

the borders. That is a change. So every 

candidate who is not an incumbent or following 

a popular incumbent will campaign 

on the need for change. So saying that 

they are for change really says nothing 

about the candidate. 

There are other phrases that pop 

up in campaigns but mean nothing. In 

every school board election there will be 

candidates who say they are running for 

the children. This differentiates this candidate 

from his opponents because the 

opponents are for the wombats? And the 

ever popular "I will unite both sides". This 

doesn't mean that the candidate plans to 

compromise to arrive at solutions. What 

he means is that he thinks his ideas are 

so superior and he is so dynamic that 

when he is given the opportunity, people 

will come to his position. So it is just more 

talk, saying nothing. Another favorite is 

when the candidate says that, unlike his 

opponent, he is an outsider. This implies 

that the insiders are on the take. Is this 

message for us or for the people who are 

enriching the insiders, stating that this 

new candidate will be available for enriching 

soon. 

We hear politicians promising 

things but not indicating how they will 

achieve them or pay for them. It is like a 

skeleton, all bones but no meat or muscle. 

This used to be more of a State and 

National thing. But now we have candidates 

in our local elections promising 

things which may be difficult to achieve.

SPECIAL TO THE OBSERVER: THE SPIRIT AWARDS

Once viewed almost as the ugly 

stepsister to the Academy Awards, over 

the years the Spirit Awards have now 

become an important measuring stick as to 

what is truly golden in the art of filmmaking. 

From the unending support of its sponsor, 

Film Independent, to the spectacular 

showcase afforded by the Los Angeles 

Film Festival, the Spirit Awards celebrate 

not only independent filmmaking, but the 

art of the craft that truly encompasses the 

inherent essence and purity of film. 

Originally known as the FINDIE 

Awards at its inception in 1984, the awards 

were renamed the Independent Spirit 

Awards in 1986. As an added bonus, 

members of what was then known as IFP 

and now Film Independent, of which I am 

proud to be a part of, began voting for the 

winners. 

Over the past 22 years, the Spirit 

Awards have grown to be a highlight in not 

only the film industry but for our geographic 

area as well. As George Clooney opined 

a few years ago, independent films are 

truly now the mainstream of the industry. 

So, this Saturday, independent filmmakers 

hit the beach in Santa Monica as they celebrate 

and honor what I believe is one of 

the finest years of independent filmmaking 

to come along in quite awhile. And don't 

think for a minute this fete is by any means 

second rate. There are enough "swag" 

and celebratory parties to rival anything 

that the Academy Awards may turn out, 

without the uncomfortable formal attire and 

footwear. 

I have been most fortunate this 

year by having not only viewed all of the 

nominated films, some as early as Los 

Angeles Film Festival in June 2007, but 

also interviewed the majority of nominees, 

many of whom I am now privileged to call 

friends. And I am pleased to note that Film 

Independent and the Spirit Awards nominating 

committee appear to be right in step 

with my top picks given the list of nominees. 

So, who should shine on 

Saturday? 

Right off the bat, I admit that there 

is one category that, for me, has no clear 

cut winner - that of the John Cassavetes 

Award. This is tie. Two of my favorite filmmakers, 

Chris Eska and Stephane Gauger 

are both nominated for their feature films, 

respectively, AUGUST EVENING, a 

poignant tale of an extended immigrant 

family, and OWL & THE SPARROW, a tale 

of three people among the 8 million souls 

in Saigon who are looking for love and a 

family. Both heartfelt and visually exquisite 

and touching, both were also award winners 

at Los Angeles Film Festival, 

AUGUST EVENING for not only the jury 

award for Best Feature Film but a special 

award for Best Ensemble, and OWL &THE 

SPARROW for the Feature Film Audience 

Award. I got to know both Chris and 

Stephan during LAFF thereafter and they 

are two of the most enthusiastic and passionate 

filmmakers around. With similar 

technique, they each rely on exemplary 

cinematography and natural sounds of the 

environ to tell a story. However, Stephane, 

an intuitive filmmaker, may have an added 

edge thanks to the beauty and elegance in 

his film's simplicity which eloquently captures 

the beauty of Saigon and its people. 

A category with extremely tough 

competition is that of Best First Feature. 

Leading the pack are Julie Delpy's 2 DAYS 

IN PARIS, Scott Frank's THE LOOKOUT 

and Jeffrey Blitz with ROCKET SCIENCE. 

The diversity in this category is extraordinary 

and never moreso than between THE 

LOOKOUT and ROCKET SCIENCE. 

Scott Frank is a master at big screen suspense 

and character development. As 

both writer and first time director, with THE 

LOOKOUT, he seamlessly melds unconventional 

and compelling characters with a 

searing realism and dark intensity of a classic 

film noir thriller. Jeffrey Blitz, on the 

other hand, takes his own life experiences 

with stuttering and wows us with the irreverent 

and funny tale of young Hal Hefner 

who must overcome stuttering, debating 

and puppy love in the course of a high 

school semester. It's a toss up, but I think 

I've got to put my money on ROCKET SCI- 

ENCE. 

And while Cate Blanchett not only 

garnered an Oscar nod for her portrayal 

Bob 

Dylan but a Spirit Award nomination, I have 

to believe it doesn't take rocket science to 

know that Anna Kendrick should be a lock 

as Best Supporting Actress with her portrayal 

of Ginny in ROCKET SCIENCE. 

Although Blanchett is mesmerizing, I suspect 

that Spirit voters may look to Kendrick 

and leave Oscar gold for Blanchett. Steely 

and determined, Kendrick keeps you 

guessing as to exactly what Ginny is all 

about, holding back, building questions 

about Ginny, giving you the sense that 

something is bubbling beneath the surface 

before exploding with energy and emotion 

at precisely the right moment. 

Someone who was so grossly 

overlooked by the Academy this year but 

thankfully, has been acknowledged by the 

Spirit Awards, is Frank Langella. As 70 year 

old novelist Leonard Schiller, Langella lifts 

the already superlative emotion generated 

by novelist Brian Morton''s Pen/Faulkner 

award-nominated novel STARTING OUT 

IN THE EVENING to ethereal heights. 

With eloquence and simplistic beauty, his 

singular performance touched my heart so, 

so as to move me to tears. Although he is 

my pick for Best Male Lead, he will probably 

face stiff competition from Philip 

Seymour Hoffman in THE SAVAGES. 

Best Female Lead is an interesting 

category. There was much ado about 

Angelina Jolie being passed over for Oscar 

for A MIGHTY HEART but in the spirit of 

independent film, she is one of the hot contenders 

for a Spirit Award. However, I think 

we've all got to give it up for Academy 

Award and Spirit Award nominee, newcomer, 

Ellen Page who just blows everyone 

out of the water as JUNO. 

We might have a showdown 

when it comes to Best Picture and Best 

Feature Director with Julian Schnabel and 

Jason Reitman going head to head with 

THE DIVING BELL AND THE BUTTER- 

FLY and JUNO, respectively. Both equally 

fine films, I think Schnabel's experience 

may carry him further with the voters in 

both categories unless popular opinion 

prevails, in which case Reitman should win 

leaving Schnabel to possibly take home 

some Oscar gold on Sunday. 


When it comes to the more eclectic 

categories like Best Cinematography, I 

think you all know my vote this year for 

every award in cinematography is Janusz 

Kaminki for DIVING BELL. His beauteous 

lensing takes us on the emotional roller 

coaster with long suffering Dominique 

Bauby. Paired with the superlative screenplay 

adaptation by Ronald Hardwood and 

Julian Schnabel's direction, words pale to 

the visual excellence and emotional 

wrenching of this film. 

And not to be overlooked is Best 

Documentary, long a cornerstone in independent 

film. Again, a tough category, but 

my pick is Dan Klores CRAZY LOVE, the 

most bizarre, insane, kitchy, and let's face 

it, weirdest love story of the ages telling the 

true life 

story of Burt and Linda Pugach. 

In case you aren't one of the lucky 

few to make it into the tent down on the 

beach Saturday (although I will be thinking 

of you as I wander through the swag 

room), you can catch all the fun, frolic and 

unfettered exuberance of independent film 

and the Spirit Awards live on IFC channel 

at 2:00 p.m. Pacific Time or on a repeat 

AMC broadcast later Saturday night.

Culver's Coons Helps 

West LA Get First Home Win

If a succession of Culver City 

High baseball players advance to the new 

program at West Los Angeles College in 

upcoming years, as is expected, Alex 

Coons will be their role model. 

Coons, a righthanded pitcher, 

became the first Centaur alumnus to play 

a prominent role in an Oiler home victory 

in 21 years last Saturday when he 

worked the first 7 2/3 innings of a comefrom-behind 

5-4 win over Saddleback 

College. 

Saddleback won the second 

game of the doubleheader, 12-1, bringing 

West LA's record to 4-5. 

Coons was not the winning pitcher. 

He was relieved by Kelsey Kondo, a 

righthander from Brazil, with the game 

tied, 4-4. Kondo received credit for the 

win when right fielder Ricky Guitterez hit 

a bases loaded single in the ninth to bring 

home Milan DePillars. 

But Coons lasted longer than 

any Oiler starter has for a program 

brought back this season after the school 

had been without a team since 1986. 

"Alex was outstanding. I'm very 

proud of him," said West LA coach Bob 

Grant. "He kept us in the game against a 

very good hitting team, and then we rallied 

like we have in most games." 

The West LA program was 

revived and a coaching staff hired late in 

the recruiting process and most of 

Culver's key 2007 players had committed 

to other schools, leaving Coons and 

pitcher Will Helmn as the only former 

Centaurs to join the Oilers' program. 

Helmns is redshirting. 

However Grant is optimistic that

Culver, the closest high school to the 

West LA campus, will soon contribute 

more players to his program. 

"We inquired, but the Culver 

players had made other commitments," 

said Grant. "But we're looking for good 

ballplayers and good students, and 

Culver has an excellent baseball program 

with Rick Prieto as coach. We're certainly 

going to be interested in their players." 

Last Thursday West LA traveled 

to Porterville and won a non-conference 

game, 12-8. 

West LA will begin Western State 

Conference Southern Division play 

tonight with a 6 p.m. game at Glendale 

College and will play Glendale again 

Saturday at 1 p.m. at West LA. 

USC-UCLA Rivalry Flares Anew 

We've known that the USC-UCLA rivalry 

has a life of its own, regardless of how the 

games are going on the field. 

But the latest episode in the rivalry 

has arrived in a most unexpected way - 

a debate about the worth of assistant football 

coach Norm Chow. 

Because Chow has helped develop 

four Heisman Trophy winners ( Carson 

Palmer and Matt Leinart at USC, Phillip 

Rivers at North Carolina State and Ty 

Detmer at BYU), he is generally regarded 

as a master of his profession. And 

although he and Pete Carroll didn't appear 

to be on the best of terms when he left 

USC for an NFL job with the Tennessee 

WLA Coach Bob Grant 

Titans, Chow's image remained solid even 

when the Titans fired him. 

Until recently, I had never heard 

anyone question the wisdom of a school 

having Chow on its coaching staff. 

In fact, Los Angeles Times sports 

columnist Bill Plaschke recently praised 

UCLA for hiring Chow and suggested that 

high school players would be drawn to the 

Bruins with the chance of being developed 

by Chow. 

I didn't disagree. I also thought it 

was an excellent move for new Bruin head 

coach Rick Neuheisel to bring Chow onto 

his staff. 

UCLA students agreed too, giving 

Chow a rousing ovation at halftime of a 

recent basketball game in Pauley Pavilion. 

However, we now hear from the 

other side. 

Columnist Loel Schrader, writing 

in USC Report, a publication devoted to 

Trojan athletics, wrote a scathing piece in 

the current edition. He portrayed Plaschke 

as a columnist who doesn't understand 

sports and told of a time Chow was sent on 

a recruiting trip by USC and botched it so 

badly he was removed from those duties. 

Schrader grudgingly admitted that 

Chow is good at calling plays but emphasized 

his point that the impact Chow will 

have at UCLA is being overrated. 

"As Steve Bisheff and I revealed

in our book, "Fight On. A Colorful Story Of 

USC Football, the offensive scheme for the 

Trojans was taken away from Chow after 

a 6-6 2001 season," Schrader wrote. "In 

other words, the BYU offense Chow 

brought with him was junked." 

I am a longtime friend of Bisheff 

and called him to clarify this issue which 

had become confusing to me. 

"It's true that Loel and I wrote the 

book, but he wrote that chapter 

and I don't agree with him about 

Chow," Bisheff told me. 

"I don't think USC's 

offense has been nearly as good 

since Chow left. And a year ago, 

when USC lost to UCLA, 13-9 

and lost a chance at another 

national championship, Chow 

was missed. 

"If he was there I believe 

he would have figured out a way 

at halftime to successfully attack 

the defense UCLA was using." 

The arrival of Chow has 

helped UCLA bring in one key 

recruit so far, quarterback Robert 

Croft. 

He will arrive from Mt. 

San Antonio College in time for 

spring practice to join the competition 

with returnees Ben Olson 

and Patrick Cowan. Croft, who 

was at San Diego State for a year, was the 

community college player of the year last 

season when he completed more than 300 

passes. 

Well, it wouldn't be USC and 

UCLA if they weren't sparring about something. 

And we couldn't expect a former 

Trojan with the stature of Chow joining the 

Bruins without kindling some kind of controversy.

Kidd Adds Intrigue to 

Pau Gasol with the Lakers, 

Shaquille O'Neal with the Suns, Damon 

Stoudamire with the Spurs and now Jason 

Kidd with the Mavericks. 

The four Western Conference powerhouses 

all have made significant additions 

for the stretch run, all hoping to gain a berth in 

the NBA Finals. 

The latest move is an eight-player 

trade between the Mavericks and Nets, bringing 

Kidd into the mix. 

This is a gamble for the Mavericks 

because they gave up so much. Kidd will be 

35 next month. One player the Mavericks 

traded was Devin Harris, a swift guard who is 

24. Another is Desagna Diop, a 26-year-old 

backup center who provided defense and 

muscle on the many nights when starter Eric 

Dampier wasn't playing well. 

But make no mistake about it, Kidd 

can be the Mavericks' missing piece to their 

championship hopes. Imagine how valuable 

he would have been in the first round of the 

playoffs last season when the No. 1-seeded 

Mavericks were taken out of their rhythm and 

upset by the No, 8-seeded Warriors. 

Do you think that would have happened 

if the Mavericks had Kidd handling the 

ball against pressure defense? 

I repeat what I wrote last week, that 

I'll make no predictions about the outcome of 

the Western race because who knows what's 

going to happen with the new players. But I 

think one of the recently-acquired players is 

going to represent the difference.

Which one? I don't know. Do you? 

I do think the NBA should take a serious 

look at its rules that allow retired players to be 

part of trades. It makes the league look foolish. 

In order to satisfy a league rule that 

salaries must be roughly equal to complete a 

trade the league allowed the Lakers to sign 

Aaron McKie , who had retired and was an 

assistant coach with the 76ers, and swap him 

to the Grizzlies to get Gasol. 

And now the Mavericks have included 

Keith Van Horn, who retired two seasons ago, 

in the deal with the Nets. 

These retired players aren't expected to 

come out of retirement. They're just on the 

books to complete the transaction. 

McKie made $750,000 in the last season 

he played and Van Horn made $4.3 million. 

Presumably they'll be payed a portion of that 

for the remaining games of this season 

although neither is expected to play. 

The NBA insists the maneuvers were 

legal. But it sure looks bad. 

Well, let's enjoy the stretch run with a lot 

of great games coming up. The Lakers played 

the Suns Wednesday night, they have a 

Sunday afternoon home game against the 

Mavericks coming up, they have a March trip 

to San Antonio, Utah and Houston. The rout 

of the Hawks Tuesday was encouraging, but 

it's the games against Western contenders 

that is going to settle the race. 

Lakers To Hold Youth Camp 

The Lakers will conduct "Camp Lakers", presented by dazadi.com, a youth 

basketball camp for boys ages 9-18, this July in two sessions, it was announced by the

Lasorda To Manage 

Dodgers For A Week 

The Dodgers have announced that Hall of Fame Manager and Special 

Advisor to the Chairman Tommy Lasorda will return to the dugout to manage a 

Dodgers' spring training split squad during the final week of Grapefruit League action 

while Manager Joe Torre is in China with the balance of the team. 

"There is no one else in the game of baseball like Tommy Lasorda," said Torre. 

"I can't think of a more fitting tribute to a man who embodies the Dodger organization 

than to have him lead the team during our final week of games here in Vero Beach." 

Lasorda will take over the reins of the split squad on March 11 when Torre and 

a split squad depart for an historic two-game series in Beijing, the first of its kind in 

Major League history. Lasorda will manage the team for seven games, highlighted by 

the final home game at Holman Stadium on March 17 when the Dodgers will continue 

the long-standing tradition of wearing green hats for St. Patrick's Day. Lasorda will 

throw out the ceremonial first pitch before the game. 

The March 17 contest will culminate a series of events this spring to pay tribute 

to the many Dodger legends that have created lasting memories for Dodger fans 

across the globe during the team's six decades at Dodgertown.

The Culver City High girls' soccer team got the first goal last week in its 

CIF Southern Section Division III first-round playoff game against Chadwick of 

Palos Verdes, but the Centaurs couldn't hold the early lead. 

After Euricka Atkinson scored for the Centaurs two minutes into the game, 

Chadwick rallied with three goals for a 3-1 victory. 

Culver City ended its season with a 14-12-2 record. Chadwick improved 

to 19-1-2. 

Chadwick tied the score 1-1 on a goal by Ashley Nendick in the 29th 

minute, and Eleni Marmarellis' goal in the 38th minute gave the Dolphins a 2-1 

lead at halftime. Marmarellis scored her second goal of the game in the 66th 

minute to make it 3-1. 

Chadwick won despite playing without its leading scorer, Channing Press, 

who was sidelined with a knee injury she suffered in practice two days before the 

game.

Culver Girls Earn Playoff Win

The Culver City High girls' basketball team won its first playoff game in 

at least five years, as the Centaurs defeated South Pasadena, 63-55, last Friday 

in the first round of the CIF Southern Section Division II-AA playoffs. 

Savannah Erskine had 19 points and Latijera Avery added 13 points, 

seven rebounds and four blocks for visiting Culver City (22-5), which led by 10 

points at halftime and by 13 after three quarters. 

South Pasadena (17-7), with a small, quick team that Culver City 

matched up well against, wasn't able to make a serious run in the second half. 

"They were similar to us, not real big but quick, which helped us," 

Centaurs coach Jack Nakanishi said. "We didn't have to worry about one or two 

big girls, which helped. And we were able to play up-tempo, which we're good 

at." 

Culver City was scheduled to play at home on Wednesday (Feb. 20) in a 

second-round game against Santiago of Corona. Santiago, which won its firstround 

game over Charter Oak 71-29, is 19-9 overall and is the first-place team 

from the Mountain View League. 

The Culver City High boys didn't qualify for the playoffs. Among Ocean 

League teams, league champion Santa Monica advanced with a home win over 

Ramona of Riverside but Hawthorne and Inglewood lost their first round games. 

Culver City National Little 

League Opens 53rd Season 

Culver City National Little League will open its 53rd season Saturday. 

Opening Day Ceremonies commence on Saturday from 10 a.m to 11:30 at Bill Botts 

Field, located at the top of Culver City Park, and will signal the official start of the 2008 

season. More than 1,000 people are expected to attend. 

"This year over 400 boys and girls, ages 5 to 14, will participate in CCNLL's 

baseball and softball program," says CCNLL Board President George Aceves. "The

A Hybrid That's A

Hybrid cars are getting a lot of attention. While sales of hybrids are still only a 

very small part of the total number of vehicles sold, a huge portion of people who are 

considering a new vehicle do consider the prospect of buying a hybrid. A few weeks 

ago I got to drive several mid-size hybrid sedans and I wasn't particularly kind, so I got 

a phone call. 

Nissan was surprised that I was underwhelmed with their 2008 Altima Hybrid 

and, to be fair, I did only get to drive it for about 10-15 minutes in that comparison. Also, 

I drove these gas sippers right after driving the very performance-oriented Honda 

Accord V6, which definitely colored my judgement. So, the solution was to give me one 

for an entire week to see what I thought of it. 

What's Hot 

The obvious appeal of hybrids is that they have the ability to utilize either electric 

motors or the gasoline engine to propel the car. Under extreme demand they use 

both, under very limited demand they only use the electric motor. For most driving they 

use some combination of the two and also use all sorts of methods to charge the batteries 

that operate the electric motor. 

This gee-wiz technology is licensed from Toyota, who thought of it first for their 

Prius and is quite happy to license the idea to others including Nissan and Ford. The 

logic behind this kind of technology is that many people don't really need that V6 they 

really wanted because they spend a lot of time inching along in traffic jams or crawling 

around the city looking for a parking space so why not use energy saved up to move 

the vehicle via an electric motor? 

That's just the type of driving I did this week with the Altima, spending a week 

traveling to and from a trade show while mostly sitting in traffic. While this is normally 

the conditions that create the worst fuel economy, a hybrid lives for these conditions. 

The tested Altima achieved an indicated 33.4 miles per gallon in the week that I had it, 

which is actually pretty good considering the traffic and driving I did. 

In my previous and brief look at the Altima Hybrid, I had just driven the Honda Accord 

V6 and all the evaluation driving was done on open roads - not the best place to showoff 

a hybrid's strengths. This time I spent time driving the car where it performs the best.

So the result? 

I actually enjoyed driving the Altima Hybrid. Like most owners of these sorts of 

cars, I considered it a challenge to keep a feather weight on the accelerator pedal so 

that I could run on only the electric motor when the traffic slowed to a crawl. As for performance 

in any traffic situation, the Altima Hybrid was just fine. Getting onto the freeway 

via an uphill on ramp was a breeze and performance was acceptable all around. 

My perception is different when I haven't driven a very strong car within minutes of driving 

the Altima Hybrid. 

Also, this car was quite comfortable, unlike the one I had driven previously. In 

the last ride in the Altima Hybrid I couldn't fight the feeling that the seats were literally 

pushing me out of them. That wasn't the case this time, with the seats being comfortable 

for all the driving I did this week. 

In Summary 

What scares me about hybrids is the incredible technology it takes to make 

them work. Keeping this much complexity working the way it's supposed to could be a 

challenge, but we shall see over time. There is also no mention of battery replacement, 

although this will certainly become an issue after the years and miles rack up. Maybe 

I'm chicken little, or maybe I'm king rooster when it comes to the longevity of this technology 

- either way only time will tell. 

Nissan describes the Altima as the first hybrid that drives like a Nissan. Well,
