The Journey Of A Lifetime
Student Ambassador Rachel Brown of Culver City
is heading to Europe
By Gail Wichert
Observer Reporter
People To People
Chooses Culver Resident
School is out. While many kids
are looking forward to a chance to do a
whole lot of nothing, 17-year-old Culver
City resident Rachel Brown is busy
preparing for the journey of a lifetime. She
leaves in July, but her adventure really
started in February with the arrival of an
unsolicited package from the People to
People Student Ambassador Program.
Enamored by Renaissance legends
of castles and royalty since her middle-school
education at St. Augustine's,
perhaps the fates had a hand in assuring
Rachel's participation in the Program's
2008 European Tour. More likely, she was
nominated by one of the Marymount High
School staff familiar with her fascination
with European history.
During our interview it became
obvious why Rachel was nominated as a
Student Ambassador. She is an experienced
historian. Last year she was one of
three Marymount students commissioned
to work on the Religious of the Sacred
Heart of Mary Oral History Project. She
even has diplomatic experience, having
held an elected seat on the Honor
Council. Not exactly a disciplinary committed,
the Council made, "recommendations
for consequences. We don't call them
punishments."
People to People International
was established in 1956 by President
Eisenhower in an effort to promote world
peace, one citizen ambassador at a time.
The Program was expanded in 1963 to
include the Student Ambassador Program
emphasizing the development of leadership
skills among America's youth.
Traveling under the banner of People to
People, these Student Ambassadors
Culver City High Graduation - Page 4
www.CulverCityObserver.Com
experience foreign cultures while serving
as representatives of the best of this country.
Rachel is part of the Hollywood
delegation which consists of 30 area students
and three delegate leaders. Prior to
departure, the delegates are required to
complete the "On-Board," program, a
challenging web-based curriculum
designed to properly prepare the young
Ambassadors for the adventure ahead.
"As a Student Ambassador I can
also earn high school and college credit
because of the many educational elements.
Because we are expected to act
like ambassadors, we have to know about
our own government, too."
The itinerary for the 20-day tour
includes a meeting with members of
Parliament while in London and Vatican
representatives when in Rome. "We'll get
to go behind the scenes," Rachel exudes.
"How better to experience Europe?"
"I am honored to have been
selected," Rachel wrote in her fund-raising
letter. "Upon my return I plan to share my
experience with family, friends and business
sponsors."
This is not an all-expenses paid
program. Because the cost is over
$6,000, fundraising is one of the first projects
would-be ambassadors are required
to take on. Rachel sent a fundraising letter
to over 100 Culver businesses and was
successful in getting three sponsors:
Michael Cohen of REMAX, Steven
Dumas, DDS and John Riordan of
Riordan Plumbing. With help from St.
Marks Church parishioners, friends and
family, Rachel was only able to achieve
two thirds of her fundraising goal before
the April 20 deadline.
School Board Adopts 'Terrible But Improved' Budget
By Lynne Bronstein
Observer Reporter
The 2008-2009 budget for the
Culver City School District has finally
been adopted. At Tuesday's meeting of
the Culver City School Board, Assistant
Superintendent for Business Services
David El Fattal gave the Board an
overview of the budget's components.
Briefly touching on Governor
Schwarzenegger's proposed state budget
with its "draconian" cuts to close a $14.5
billion budget gap in January 2008, El
Fattal outlined the fiscal impact of the proposed
budget on CCUSD: an initial 10 per
cent cut for all state agencies with a 1/2
per cent deficit factor and $850,000
accounted for in declining enrollment, led
to a total cut target of $3,500,000. After
the May Revise of the state budget, the
actual cuts adopted totalled $2,047,038.
"[It was] still a terrible budget, but
an improvement from the January proposal,"
El Fattal concluded.
CCUSD is projected to receive
additional revenues, estimated at
$856,266 for 2008-2009, $1,541,458 for
2009-2010, and $1,466,628 for 2010-
2011. These additional revenues will
depend what comes from state lottery
monies.
There will be another report in
September, the Unaudited Actuals, which
may show an increase or decrease in the
ending balance. States reserves are
available to mitigate an enrollment decline
or a worsening State budget next
January. Hopefully, things will not get
worse, noted El Fattal, but if they do, state
reserves may be required to fund any
shortfalls created by the very tight budget.
Also, a 1 per cent salary increase
for all employee groups is budgeted in all
years, a $150K increase in worker's compensation
premium is budgeted for 2009-
2010 and 2010-2011, a reserve of $250K
is established for retiree health benefits,
and another reserve of $650K for "salary
and staffing."
Board members had a few ques-
tions for El Fattal on specifics of percentages,
but overall they were satisfied with
the report, which President Dr. Dana
Russell described as "succinct and wellpresented."
The annual report from CBAC (
Community Budget Advisory Committee),
was given by Richard Hibbs. The committee
met nine times during the 2007-2008
school year and gave recommendations
on the budget cuts, most of which were
adopted. During the year, CBAC also discussed
other topics which did not result in
recommendations, including: CCUSD
becoming a charter district, the district
receiving funds from the City's utility users
Water Efficiency Is The Goal
Getting 'serious' about water conservation, West Basin Municipal Water
District ('West Basin'), the City of Culver City ('Culver City'), and Golden State Water
Company ('Golden State') are giving away free water efficiency devices for outdoor use
to residents who qualify for the program.
West Basin's Green Garden program provides free outdoor residential audits
for homeowners to learn where to cut water use, reduce waste and determine whether
they qualify for a state-of-the-art, water efficient irrigation controller and rotating sprinkler
nozzle.
Sixty to eighty percent of southern California water use at home is outdoors.
The water piped to our homes is imported, potable water that has been treated to meet
drinking water quality standards. Conserving water at home by using less will save
money on your water bill and conserve precious drinking water.
Culver City recently adopted West Basin's "It's time to get serious" water conservation
campaign. The proclamation declares Culver City's intention to review its
ordinances, policies and programs to help residents and businesses do their part to
conserve water.
With Governor Schwarzenegger's recent declaration that California is in a
drought caused by climate change, a court-ordered 30% reduction in imported water
from northern California, eight years of drought on the Colorado River, and a below
average snow pack, makes free outdoor water audits for residents an extremely important
and timely program.
To find out if you qualify for a free water-efficiency survey, call (866) 861-0784.
In addition to West Basin, Culver City, and Golden State, this program is co-sponsored
by Metropolitan Water District of Southern California.
Congratulations to Marilyn
Schainwooks, selected the
June “Senior of the Month”
at the Culver City Senior
Center. Fortunately for the
Center Marilyn “can’t stand sitting around
and doing nothing,” so you’ll see her at
Membership Registration, at the Business
Desk and RSVP’s S.W.A.T. (Seniors With
Available Time) member, especially at the
dog clinic and the “Stitches from the
Heart” program. Then she shifts gears
and also helps out at the Muscular
Dystrophy Foundation, Santa Monica
Hospital, and is a poll watcher at election
time. She sneaks in some travel, (snorkeling
with husband at the Great Barrier
Reef was a recent favorite), plays
mahjong, does crossword and jigsaw
puzzles and reads extensively. And what
have you done in YOUR spare time lately?
It was a busy time for the Culver City
Rotary Club last week as they played an
important role in the 2008 Rotary
International Convention, held this year
(under the leadership of Paul Netzel) in
Los Angeles. They were back in action
locally yesterday in a joint meeting with
neighboring Westchester Rotary Club,
held at the Crown Plaza LAX Hotel. The
board has recently accepted,
with regret, the following
resignations George
Angelaccio due to hotel
relocation to Rancho
Mirage; Terry Futami for
health reasons, and Frank
Quiambo, due to a job
change. According to member
Art Endo, “Every one of
them practiced ‘Service
Above Self’ when they
were active participants in
the activities of the club so
we will miss them all and
hope they will visit when
Go Centaurs! The Class of 1958’s 50 th
Reunion is coming fast – from 6 p.m. to 11
on July 26 at the Beverly Hills Country
Club on Motor Avenue in Cheviot Hills.
The doors will swing open to live guitar
music playing in the background and hors
d’oeuvres being passed. Dress is casual
and a barbecue buffet will be available for
those seated both indoors and outdoors
on the covered patio. A no host bar will be
open through the night and the dance
music – surprise! – will be from the 50’s &
60’s.
The countdown’s on: The Culver City
Rock & Mineral Club’s “Fiesta of Gems”
show weekend is July 12-13 at the
Veterans’ Memorial Auditorium, and
Show Chair Robert Thirlaway is recruiting
volunteers, raffle prizes, grab bags, displays,
and more, all with great success.
With the temperature and gas prices both
soaring, club field trips have slowed down
and the rockhounds are devoting their
time to projects in the workshop and to
show preparation. (Show hours on
Saturday are 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.; Sunday,
10 a.m. until 5 p.m.)
Leave the fireworks to the professionals
and enjoy a spectacular show at
Culver City High School’s Helms Field on
July 4. The gates open at 5 p.m., so bring
your blankets, chairs and picnic suppers
and spread out on the field, or fill up the
stands with family and friends (as usual
the YMCA snack bar will be ready when
you need kettle corn, sno cones, hot
dogs, sodas, Krispy Kreme donuts or coffee
to keep you going until the fireworks
begin at 9 p.m.) Admission is by donation
($2.00 suggested) and everyone’s invited
to enjoy the Culver City Exchange Club’s
annual show.
Already looking forward to next year’s
exhibit are members of the Culver City
Senior Center, who ranked last month’s
Annual Art Exhibit as one of the best ever.
Among the contributors was our neighbor,
talented Irma Oberding, whose works
were among those on display in the lobby
of the Center.
Dear Editor
Letters To The Editor
My previous letter stated the issue of dividing the lot at 4227 Ince Bl was going
to be heard on 6/23; the council now has it listed for hearing on 7/28.
Larry Loughlin
Culver City
Dear Editor
On behalf of a great many persons, I would like to thank Vice Mayor Gary
Silbiger, Councilmember Christopher Armenta and Councilmember Mehaul O'Leary
for supporting a pilot animal control program in the Council meeting last Monday night.
For those who, like myself, have difficulty with large numbers, it may be worth
pointing out that the estimated cost comes to between $3 and $4 per Culver City resident
per year, or somewhat less than a single gallon of gas. The program, moreover,
will not only benefit pet owners.
I still have vivid memories of the Michigan animal control officer who took
away the dying rabid raccoon writhing on my front steps some 20 years ago. Last summer,
there being no one in Culver City to call for help, I had to deal with the rather large
snake--which didn't have a rattle so I hoped wasn't poisonous--in my study on my own.
However, since a principal reason for having a local animal control program
is to keep escaped pets from being sent to the nightmarish facility in Carson, I wish the
Council had accepted the local veterinarians' offer to shelter for 24 hours and attempt
to contact the owners of all licensed/microchipped animals picked up by the animal
control officer. Since the owners would have to pay a boarding fee, the service would
cost the public nothing.
Indeed, since it would provide a major incentive for pet-owners to get their animals
licensed, and licensing fees go to the city, such a service might substantially offset
the cost of the animal control program.
First Street Closure Begins
This Weekend
By Stephen Hadland
Expo Line Construction Begins
At the City Council meeting Monday night Eric Olsen, Chief Project Officer for
the Metro Construction Authority, gave a full presentation on the pending construction
of the Exposition Line through Culver City.
The first closure will occur this weekend. The Exposition Construction
Authority will close Jefferson Boulevard from La Cienega Boulevard to Rodeo Road
and National Boulevard from Hayden Avenue to Jefferson Boulevard in order to
accommodate the light rail transit construction activities at the Ballona Creek Bridge.
The street closure will take place from 10 p.m. on Friday through 3 p.m. on Saturday..
Construction crews will reconfigure traffic on Jefferson Boulevard to accommodate
construction activities at the Ballona Creek Bridge as part of the light rail transit
project. Activities will include setting concrete barriers (K-rail), re-striping the street,
installing temporary signals and construction of new medians.
Traffic will be detoured off Jefferson Boulevard from La Cienega Boulevard to
Rodeo Road and National Boulevard from Hayden Avenue to Jefferson Boulevard during
this construction activity. Traffic traveling on Jefferson Boulevard will be directed
around construction areas by using La Cienega Boulevard, Rodeo Road, Hayden
Avenue and National Boulevard.
Directional signage, electronic message boards and flagmen will be used to
safely direct drivers around the construction zones in order to minimize the disruption
to traffic. Parking restrictions in all construction areas will be strictly enforced at all
times.
Completion of the phase of the project to Culver City is expected in July of
2010.
In a tribute to retiring city commission and committee members Mayor Scott
Malsin opened the meeting with retiring Disability Advisory Committee Member Steve
Bauer leading those in the chamber in the pledge of allegiance to our flag. Following
the pledge retiring Parks and Recreation Commissioner Charles Deen and other retiring
committee members were called to the dais to receive their proclamations or certificates
of recognition.
Their were a number of Public Hearings, the only one that involved any discussion
was a discussion of fee increases involving many areas of city finance.
Councilmember Gary Silbiger was stuck on the percentage of collections of the cost of
service instead of looking at the entire issue of what is being charged in comparison to
surrounding cities. Many in the audience mentioned to this reporter that the comparisons
vary from city to city"
It is like comparing one apple to another when one is Granny Smith and the
other is a Fuji."
"The most subsidized area is parks and recreation, that is not a bad thing
since Culver City children are a true resource for our city," said Malsin.
The discussion was a jungle of points from many of the council members to
bring their specific theme into focus. The discussion led to approval of the staff report
that was previously reviewed by the council budget and finance committee that Malsin
and Councilmember Christopher Armenta sits on.
A quick approval of a composting program that is funded by Los Angeles
County Taxpayer money was next on the agenda and met with praise from the council.
The demonstration project is set for Carlson Park.
Just weeks after asking the council to establish a youth advisory
council, Silbiger presented another idea to establish a community
council in the city. With many city commissions, committees
and an upcoming review of the City's General council members
expressed the belief that the residents had enough opportunities
to participate and voice their views and concerns. With only
the support of Armenta the issue died.
Under council comments Silbiger did his weekly berating of
City Manager Jerry Fulwood again. The issue revolved around
televising a non-city community meeting. It appeared to be just
another opportunity of the councilmember to vent on his belief of
a lack of communications with the city manager. Fulwood in his
normally stylish way explained to the councilmen that after their
telephone conversation on Saturday a response was sent by the
Community Development Director on Monday, The councilmen
apparently had not yet read his email.
Continued From Page 5
The crowd that filled the Council
chambers bespeaks widespread local
support for a humane and responsive animal
control program. The cost looks to be
minimal. Some of the specifics, however,
remain to be worked out, and I hope that
the Council and community will continue
their terrific efforts to ensure that this trial
succeeds.
Culver City
Dear Editor,
Last Monday I was on my way to
a Culver City Council meeting when I
must have entered a time warp or something.
Instead of Culver City, I ended up in
Bizarro World.
You remember Bizarro World
from the Superman comics. It is where up
is down, left is right, bad is good, etc. I
even went to a Bizarro World Council
meeting where their Councilmen looked
just like the Culver City Councilmen. But I
could tell it wasn't the Culver City Council
meeting because the BW (Bizarro World)
Councilmen Weissman and Malkin
expressed concern that there wasn't
enough community notification for the
item being discussed.
And we all know that even if Mr.
Fulwood went house to house, telling residents
about an upcoming meeting, the
CC Councilman Silbiger wouldn't think
that was sufficient notification. But the BW
Councilman Silbiger felt the two-day notification
to a limited audience was ample
notification.
And while the BW Councilman
Silbiger didn't feel this item was being
rushed through, BW Councilman Malkin
did believe the item was being rushed.
This was just the opposite positions taken
by their Culver City counterparts during
the Entrada discussions. And why the difference?
I guess it is as the old saying
goes, "It depends on whose ox is being
gored". But soon, if your ox is being
gored, you can call our local animal control
officer.
I went to the Council meeting for
an item that was postponed but I waited to
listen to the animal control officer discussion.
I went to the meeting with no opinion
about the need for an animal control officer
and left before the vote with still no
opinion. I listened and understood the
complaints about the poor service we are
getting from the County. But I was unconvinced
that having our own animal control
officer would necessarily improve the
service we will get.
I am assuming our animal control
officer will be a 40-hour a week position;
eight hours a day, five days a week. If
someone has an animal problem while
our officer is on his weekend, who will
handle the problem? Will it be necessary
to wait until he returns to work?
Who will handle a complaint at 6
in the evening? Will the problem need to
wait until our animal control officer reports
for work in the morning? This sounds like
the service we are getting from the
County.
And do we have 40 hours of work
for an animal control officer to do? Do we
have 40 hours of work in five eight-hour
blocks for an animal control officer? There
are no packs of wild dogs running around
my neighborhood. I don't see that many
dead animals on our streets. It sounds like
the main task of our animal control officer
will be tracking down scofflaws in the City
who aren't licensing their dogs.
But this isn't what the speakers at
the meeting were complaining about. This
was only discussed in relation to funding
the animal control officer for the tasks normally
associated with the job. It seems to
me that there may have been a better
method for supplying the service the people
wanted. Could we have teamed with
other neighboring small cities, taking
advantages of economies of scale, to
supply 24/7 coverage in all of the cities?
The other thing that I didn't feel
was addressed in the final decision was
what to do with animals that are picked up
by our animal control officer. Many of the
speakers talked about the terrible conditions
at the Carson shelter. But it appears
that with the decision reached Monday
night, our animal control officer will need
to take strays picked up in Culver City to
the Carson shelter. There was a lot of talk
about looking into finding better places to
take the strays, but looking into something
is just that.
Talking is not having. Until there
is a shelter in Culver City or an acceptable
shelter nearby that can be used, the
biggest complaint from the speakers that
evening remains unsolved. It appears that
the decision was not made to solve a
problem but to approve a new program
before the budget was approved.
And finally, I watched the conclusion
of the meeting on television.
There were originally two motions made
on the issue. And while they looked different,
they were actually the same.
Councilman Armenta made the motion
that the City Council approves the plans
to hire and fund a full-time animal control
officer. Councilman O'Leary made a substitute
motion to conduct a 24 month pilot
program with a local animal control officer.
We would employ a full-time animal
control officer and evaluate the program
after two years. I don't know what
Councilman O'Leary's experience is with
American government programs.
In my experience there is no
such thing as a temporary program or a
pilot program when talking about government
programs. We are still paying a temporary
sales tax increase from a dozen or
more years ago.
Government programs are like a boulder
on the top of a mountain. Once you get it
rolling down the hillside, there is no stopping
it. Or as one speaker put it that night,
"Once the camel gets its nose in the tent,
you're not getting it out."
But of course we will soon be
able to call our local animal control officer
to remove the camel.
Tom Supple
Culver City
Dear Editor,
I look so forward to Culver City
finally having it's own Animal Control
Officer (AC0)!
Many of us here in Culver City
have had similar experiences - we've
approached stray dogs, if friendly enough
Letters To The Editor
and read the tag, if there's one and have
tried to contact the guardian for the dog to
be retrieved. Many of us also have found
dead pets or birds and disposed of them.
An ACO for Culver City is not just about
dead animals. And many of us know that
if the Carson shelter showed up in four
hours, that is a record time for them and
not the norm. You'd have to wonder how
long it took to try and get a hold of them.
You might also wonder what happened to
an unfortunate dog that was abandoned
at the Carson Shelter - he most likely is
now dead based on the County's high
euthanasia rate.
I've lived here in Culver City for
22 years and have seen many stray dogs
through out the years, both friendly and
unapproachable. I've seen many stray
cats as well as several sick possum,
squirrels or birds. I've come across
many people, myself included, with lost
pets of their own or that they've just
found and they don't know who to call.
If they do know and do call Carson, they
get horrible service, if any.
During the council meeting this
past Monday, Vice Mayor Gary Silbiger
put it something like this - "It depends on
where your priorities are".
In other words, everyone has
their priorities and depending on where
yours are, that is where your votes will go.
Of course an ACO for Culver City, isn't a
priority for everyone. But it is obviously
currently one (amongst other priorities
and concerns), for many Culver City folks.
That may be one of the many reasons
that Mr. Armenta and Mr. O'Leary were
Continued From Page 5
voted in by the citizens of Culver City.
I saw the estimated program
costs proposed by CC's staff and believe,
as many others do that they are over
inflated. Culver City, being a small city,
should be able to find a way to work
together and run a much more efficient
and cost effective program than we are
getting from outsourcing. We should be
able to provide a much better service for
our public and animals and run a cost
effective operation that our city can be
proud of. That given some time, those
who have a concern about the programs
cost will hopefully come to realize the
decision was in the best interest of Culver
City.
As far as the new West LA shelter
- the director of Friends of Culver City
Animals (FCCA) is ahead of the game in
that matter and has had several discussions
with the head of L.A. Animal
Services. They have just taken on the city
of Beverly Hills and are more than aware
that Culver City is interested and next in
line. The WLA shelter would absolutely
be a great improvement and hopefully we
can look forward to that being one of our
next steps with this issue!
El Fattal also summarized a list of summer maintenance and operations projects.
Among these, a new project involving the installation of new lockers for high
school athletes, was a concern to Dr. Jessica Beagle-Roos, who said that it seemed
there were more lockers for boys than for girls, and that this might violate Title IX. El
Fattal promised to look into the issue.
On a lighter note, a group of students received American Citizenship Awards,
and several teachers were honored with "Culver City Building Blocks." These are
inscribed plaques that are installed in the walls of the lobby at the Board of Education
headquarters.
Elizabeth Lowery (donated by students at Farragut Elementary). Also honored was the
late Chuck Baird, a firefighter who had often been a guest at school functions and
accompanied students on class trips. Baird's plaque or block, was donated by his family,
in his memory, and was inscribed "Every Kindergartner's Favorite Firefighter."
Due to her work load at school and studying for the SAT's, the fundraising efforts had
to come to an end. Not one to give up, Rachel struck a deal with her parents. She
Exhibiting keen analytical skills, Rachel determined that, "20 days in Europe is better
After going against teammates in spring practice, the Culver City High football
The 2008 version of the Centaurs started play last weekend at the Beverly
and no linemen, it gave Culver City's coaching staff the chance to look at players
who will be key performers during the upcoming season. This summer will be particularly
important in the development of the Centaurs, because Culver City has almost
no starters back on offense and defense from last season.
Culver City won three of five games in the Beverly Hills tournament, winning
two of three in pool play and one game in the playoff round before being knocked out
in the quarterfinals by Narbonne, which went on to win the tournament by defeating
Roosevelt in the championship game..
"I was pleased with how the kids played," Centaurs coach Tom Salter said. "It
was a very good first test for us. I think we'll improve off of it because we have so many
inexperienced players, and a lot of them got to play. The kids competed and never
backed down, and that was very encouraging to see."
Salter said he liked what he saw of quarterback Marquel Carter, who will be
replacing Darius Banks. Carter showed good arm strength but also good touch,
Centaurs assistant coach Greg Goodyear said.
"We've been working with Marquel on his mechanics and fundamentals, and
he's progressed very well," Goodyear said. "He's got a Division I college arm, and he's
got all the intangibles. He just needs some experience. He runs the team well and
reads defenses well. And what was really impressive is that he made a lot of different
throws at different speeds. He has learned that you don't have to throw the ball 100
mph all the time. He showed good touch."
Culver City opened the tournament with a 10-0 victory over Dorsey, as Carter
threw a touchdown pass and Malik Stansbury and Corey Shaw each had interceptions.
Then the Centaurs beat Lincoln 20-6 as Carter threw for three touchdowns and
Edwin Tillman had an interception. Culver City wrapped up pool play with an 18-14
loss to Ridgeview of Bakersfield as Carter had two touchdown passes and Stansbury
had an interception.
In the playoff round, the Centaurs defeated Southeast of L.A. 20-18 as Carter
threw for three touchdowns and Tillman had an interception. Then Culver City's run in
the tournament came to an end as the Centaurs lost to Narbonne 20-6 as backup
quarterback Jordan Arrington threw a touchdown pass.
Salter said the Centaurs' spread offense worked well even with mostly new
players, and even with experienced players such as Zach Davis (hamstring) and Cruz
Cueva (hand) out with injuries.
"Shaw and Stansbury both played well, and Derek Sanchez also came in after
Ed Howard got hurt (while colliding with another player) and did a great job on
defense," Salter said. "On offense, Marquel played very well, and Julian Walker looked
good at receiver.
"We ran the offense we've been running the past few years, and things looked
good. We've got a long way to go, but the good thing is that the kids were competitive
and were up to the competition."
Baseball Should Ban Dangerous Maple Bats
Sports editor
Mitch Chortkoff’s
Weekly Column
I t ' s
taken some
scary and
dangerous
moments for
major league
baseball to
even consider
outlawing
the newest
menace in
the sport -
maple bats.
W h y
are we even
talking about
this? Why am
I investing space in the newspaper that
could be put to better use? It's because it's
better to call attention to a problem before
anyone becomes seriously injured.
Wood bats used to be used at
every level of baseball. They sometimes
broke and the expense of replacing them
became a problem at the lower levels. So
metal bats, the ones that make a ping on
contact, became popular in high school
and college baseball.
Balls struck by those bats travel
fast, and allowing grown men - seasoned
pros - to use them would really be dangerous.
So they aren't used in the major
leagues.
This causes some problems for
scouts trying to evaluate young players.
The scouts have to project how far the kids
can hit a ball with a wooden bat against
superior pitching. Some college players
compete in wood bat leagues in the summer
to provide information.
But now maple bats have come
along and they shatter quicker than standard
wood bats. It's ridiculous. Game after
game we see this happen, and the danger
comes in when slivers fill the field - a standard
scene being hitters running toward
first base with a small piece in their hand
and the pitcher and infielders ducking from
the flying maple.
On Tuesday night in Kansas City,
umpire Brian O'Nora was hit in the head by
a broken bat and had to leave the game.
It didn't take long for fans, the
media and players to realize these bats
didn't belong. But Bud Selig, the commissioner,
was slow to do anything about the
problem.
At last, some action was taken
when a baseball safety committee met
Tuesday to discuss the problem. Stan
Holman, the founder of the Canadian com-
Coach Tom Salter
pany that manufactures the maple bats
made popular by Barry Bonds, said major
league teams could solve the problem by
paying triple.
Holman's reasoning was that
manufacturers could then afford to use a
better quality of wood.
Swift action isn't expected. A study
was proposed. Suggestions that larger
netting be put into ballparks to protect
spectators remains only a suggestion.

Lakers' Shakeup Likely
for Economic Reasons
Lakers' general manager Mitch Kupchak has indicated
the roster won't change significantly next season. He
also said the team isn't likely to pursue expensive free
agents.
But I find it hard to believe that once the Lakers are
satisfied with Andrew Bynum's recovery from a knee injury
they won't find a way to rid themselves of one big contract.
They'll have to decide not to give Bynum the huge
contract he's going to get from someone or choose between
Pau Gasol and Lamar Odom.
Oh, I suppose there's one more option -- send Kobe Bryant
away. Since that's not going to happen, a simple look at the
economics dictates that someone else will be reduced from
the payroll.
It's the way things are in the NBA. No team is willing
to have four contracts at $13 million or more per season.
But that's what Gasol and Odom make. Bryant makes
more, and Bynum is heading that way. The Lakers will have
the kid next season at a bargain price but then he will get
paid like a dominating center should.
There's no hurry because Bynum isn't eligible for
the big money yet, but don't expect Gasol and Odom to both
be on the team in two seasons if Bynum has established
himself.
The trick will be the Lakers' need to make the proper
evaluation. If one player is being sent away, make sure
it's the right one.
That evaluation will be the Lakers' most important
decision in the next two years. The problem is they weren't
able to find anything out this season because Bynum and
Gasol never were on the court together.
And because the Lakers were never able to see if
a Bynum-Gasol-Odom frontcourt would succeed.
Let's say it does. Then the roster would have to
change anyway because three small forwards, Vladimir
Radmanovic, Luke Walton and Trevor Ariza would be getting
millions to be reserves. No NBA team is going to invest
millions for three guys at the same position who aren't
starters.
When the Lakers acquired Ariza in a mid-season
trade they inherited a contract that had a $3.1 million player
option for next season. Ariza exercised it this week, so the
Lakers have to pay him that much for 2008-'09 unless they
Mitch Chortkoff is in his
31tst year writing about
the Lakers, the first 23
the Lakers' three
Chamberlain, Kareem
Abdul-Jabbar and
Shaquille O'Neal. His
pro basketball column
will appear each week
throughout the season.
trade him. And the price for Radmanovic and Walton is
much higher.
No, the roster doesn't fit. So Kupchak may be
telling the truth when he says a major free agent isn't coming
here. But anyone who believes the same guys will represent
the Lakers for the next couple of years is naive.
WANTED
by debbie lynn elias
If I knew nothing at all about
WANTED before sitting down in my theatre
seat, with the opening frame, I would
know all that I needed to know to solidify
my belief that not only did I want to see
this film, I needed to see this film. A huge
fan of director Timur
Bekmambetov, it only
takes a second of
frame to know that he is
the mastermind, the
wizard, behind a film
and WANTED is no different.
On seeing
Bekmambetov’s signature
works “Daywatch”
and “Nightwatch”, several
years ago I predicted
that it wouldn’t be
long before
Bekmambetov’s kickass,
high octane,
hyperkinetic, supercharged,
out-of-breath
,visually exhilarating
style would capture the
attention of Hollywood
and the world. And so it has as
Bekmambetov ratchets up the excitement,
the effects, the stunts and thrills to
levels never seen before in filmmaking
with WANTED.
Wesley Gibson has a life that no
one would want. Stuck in a cubicle by day
with a donut-scarfing frustrated loser of a
boss whose only form of entertainment
and exertion of power comes in the form
of clacking a stapler over Wesley’s head
every 30 seconds, he leaves that hell only
to go home to the hell of a girlfriend who
takes nagging to new levels of annoyance
and disdainful disgust. Oh, and she just
happens to be having an affair with
Wesley’s best friend. Plagued by what he
believes are anxiety attacks, Wesley
medicates himself regularly - and heavily
- which only contributes to his downtrodden
dejection. If only Wesley knew what
was waiting for him around the corner.
And while poor Wesley muddles
along in life, on the other side of town
there is more action going on than he
could ever possibly imagine as high tech
assassins are taking aim at one another
leaving the town littered with dead bodies
on roof tops and kin the streets. But it
doesn’t take long before the two worlds
collide.
Cornered at the local pharmacy
by the oh-so-sexy Fox, Wesley is dropped
a bombshell (other than the fact this gorgeous
woman is actually talking to him of
all people). One of the “dead bodies” in
the news was his father. Never knowing
his father, Wesley dismisses Fox as a nut
job, that is until bullets start flying, with
Wesley seemingly the target. But it goes
beyond that as the battle at hand defies
all known laws of physics. Bullets “bend”
in mid-air, bodies manipulate as if moving
through another dimension and cars, well,
cars defy every known principal and
mechanism ever discovered by Henry
Ford or the best German automotive
experts. But the kicker - all of this is
accomplished by honing in on inner talents,
genetic traits if you will, training to
excess and leading mind and body to new
dimensions, all under the guiding hand of
a man named Sloan and the secret group
of assassin called “The Fraternity.” And
Wesley is heir-apparent to the best of
them all - his father.
Now this isn’t just any group of
assassins. The Fraternity is highly specialized
and has a definite and distinct
purpose. Founded centuries ago by a
group of weavers, the Fraternity believes
there is a divine purpose to all aspects of
life and it is their sworn duty to insure that
life proceeds as Fate would have it go.
And for the purposes of Fraternity, Fate is
determined by codings interwoven into
fabrics woven on a special loom “from
above” which has guided the brethren all
these hundreds of years. And the man
who interprets the codes and hands out
“assignments” is Sloan. Cool, calm, collected.
He nary breaks a sweat as he
assigns each Fraternity member their
daily task - kill the person identified by
Fate on the loom. And now, he needs
Wesley. He wants Wesley in the fold.
(Why Sloan wants him so desperately is
for you to see for yourself.) And with no
life of any consequence, and a chance to
avenge his father’s death, Wesley comes
under the care, guidance and training of
Fox as she unlocks the powers within him
that have
been dormant
all these
years.
But as
Wesley gets
deeper into
the Fraternity,
truths come to
light. Truths
that will alter
the Fraternity
and Fate as
we know it
and ultimately
s h a p e
Wesley’s destiny
into
something
unexpected.
I was
never very impressed by Angelina Jolie
until “Mr. & Mrs. Smith.” She blew me out
of the water with her action packed, and
often comedic, performance. I didn’t think
she could top that. Boy, was I wrong. As
Fox, she is indescribable. Besides being
a kick-ass assassin with mind-blowing
unrivaled and unparalleled physicality, the
tacitly nuanced aspects she brings to Fox
are inspired and again, often quite
comedic. (Look for a few scenes where
she appears to be channeling Brad Pitt’s
“Rusty” from the “Oceans” trilogy and
you’ll know what I mean.) Her timing is
impeccable. Her facial expressiveness
speaks volumes. She is action star personified.
According to Bekmembetov,
“there is nothing she can’t do.” During the
most exhilarating action sequences, Jolie
has stated she had one thought. “'God
this is fun! Really fun.' I just had to try to
keep a straight face." Part of the appeal
of Fox according to Jolie, and I agree, is
that Fox is “like a soldier. She’s not out for
a boyfriend or relationships." She doesn’t
see herself as sexy or gorgeous and as a
result, she is “very casual about her
body...throwing it over a car wearing a
cocktail dress and heels.” This makes the
character and performance even more
intriguing and irrisistable.
Personalizing the part, not only
were Jolie’s many tattoos showcased as
part of Fox, but temporary ones were
added with Bekmamatov focusing on
those “related to this sense of justice” as
they were intrigal to the theme. “ I have
'Strength of Will' in one language, and we
added it in four other languages on my
arm." Even quotes from Winston
Churchill’s “blood toil, tears and sweat”
speech were included.
Talk about a surprise though.
James McAvoy as Wesley Gibson.
Outstanding. His put-upon antics are lovingly
hilarious and his comedic timing
flawless. Not known for action or adventure,
McAvoy’s physicality is beyond
impressive. This is the most well-rounded
full-bodied performance of his career.
Most notable, however, is his going toeto-toe
with Morgan Freeman. And what
about Freeman? As Sloan, he oozes
mysterious cool with a collected calm that
belies Sloan’s true purpose and nature.
And the quickness of a master magician,
turns on a dime, and shows an entirely
different persona. Magnificent to watch
Freeman in action.
And ladies, look out for Thomas
Kretschmann as Cross. Gorgeous, talented.
As if your heart won’t already be
racing from the film’s adrenalin rush,
Kretschmann will definitely have yours
beating faster. As Cross, he provides an
authentic moral grounding or centering,
along with veteran Terence Stamps’
Petwarsky, that is courageous and affirming.
Based on the graphic cult “comic
book” novel and series created by Mark
Millar and J.G. Jones, screenwriters
Michael Brandt, Derek Haas and Chris
Morgan do a more than acceptable adaptation,
keeping dialogue to a minimum
(boding well with the thematic secrecy of
The Fraternity), punctuating drama and
action with comedy impeccably executed
and delivered by the actors and letting
Bekmambetov run wild with his patented
brand of other-wordly exhilaration.
Importantly, the writers spent time delving
into the backstory of The Fraternity and
the character of Wesley providing depth
and reason to the story.
A humble man, Bekmambetov
describes the movie magic as “witchcraft.”
“You never know how it works. How shots
will look. There are a lot of pieces. They
are all part of the puzzle.” Key to Timur’s
success with this film is his work with
Millar and Jones in bringing their comic
book vision to the screen. He recently
laughingly admitted, “I read the script and
didn't understand how to make this movie.
Then I read the comic book. The humor
is very British. Very funny.”
Technically, the film is a masterpiece.
There is no filmmaker that can
compare with Bekmambetov’s technique,
style and executuion. Capitalizing on the
principles started by the Wachowskis with
“Matrix”, starting with “Nightwatch”,
Bekmambetov amps up the energy, the
thrills, the stunts, the CGI and with
WANTED, is no-holds-barred, not a
minute to catch your breath action. Mindboggling.
Mind-blowing. A hyperkinetic
sensory feast. All of which is thanks in no
small part to cinematographer Mitchell
Amundsen whose own talents surpass
anything he has previously achieved
either as a camera operator (which aids
with his keen eye for cinematography) or
at the right of the likes of Michael Bay and
films such as “Transformers”,
“Armageddon” or “Pirates of the
Caribbean.” Clean, razor-edged lensing
is impeccably crisp and beauteous.
According to Bekmambetov, the real
witchcraft comes in editing. “In the editing
room [is] where it all comes together.”
Here, he’s got one of the best in David
Brenner who together with Bekmambetov
“puts all the different pieces together” creating
masterful movie magic with rapidfire
pacing building to a heart-pounding
frenzy. Oh yeah!!!
As is patented with
Bekmambetov, the score is key to the
theme and film and he went with one of
the best in Danny Elfman who works his
own magic with a score to rival the visual
intensity and superiority of the on screen
imagery.
WANTED. Trust me on this.
