Parish History From 1980 ToThe 75 th Jubilee Year 2005e are a diverse communitycelebrating one another’sethnic heritage. MonthlyQuincea-neras, Our Lady ofGuadalupe and Simbang Gabicelebrations, bilingual Masses andbilingual Triduum bring us together asa people of faith.Just as in our first 50 years, our Parishcommunity is served from “before birthto after death”.We are a diverse community of manyages. We serve the not-yet-born, thepreschooler, the elementary child, junior and senior high students, middleaged adults and the elderly. Morerecently, before and after school carewas added to the list of availableservices within our community. Mostrecently, the very young have found aplace in our Caritas Childcare Center. Our community ministry and outreachare as diverse as we are. Parishionersparticipate in ministry of SharedResponsibility and Governance of theParish, in Liturgical Life, Pastoral Care,Faith Formation for Adults and forChildren, Youth Ministry, SocialOutreach and Justice, Conviviality andCommunity Building. Care for theAged and the Dying completes the circleof life within our parish family. Our Community has faced manychanges and met many challengesduring the past 25 years. In 1985 when Father Doherty leftChrist the King for neighboring St.Catherine’s, Father Andrew Bullwinkelwas assigned as our Pastor.Father Andy, as he was affectionatelyknown, had served Kirkland’s HolyFamily Churchbefore coming toChrist the King.He was raised inSt. Joseph’sParish andattended SeattlePrep.Parishionersremember himFather Andrew Bullwinkelas a warm, caring “progressive”. He was a manwith whom they said they couldcommunicate. He welcomed womenFather Andrew Bullwinkel and first communicants,First Eucharist, 1992into the liturgical ministry and made all“feel a part of the Eucharist”. Oneparishioner tells the story of threeweary male altar servers who were theonly boys in the parish who hadaccepted the ministry of serving Mass.

Father Andy asked the young girls ofthe same age, to serve, and girlsbecame highly visible on the altar.Father Bullwinkel was “acutely aware ofthe liturgical needs of the parish” and“ushered in a renewal of worshipvitality,” said another long-timeparishioner. Yet another said thatFather Andy would always beremembered for his “personal style”,and the fact that he didn’t use thepulpit, preferring to deliver his sermonsfrom a variety of places in thesanctuary. In 1986, Father Horacio Chavarriaestablished the North Seattle HispanicCommunity and in response to FatherAndy’s invitation, the Christ the Kingand the Cristo Rey communities begansharing liturgical space. On the 50 thAnniversary(1986) of theSchool, thePavilion wasdedicated inhonor of DickPowers, alongtimeparishioner, whoFather Horacio Chavarriaspearheaded thesale of tiles to pay for its construction, and Loretta Lennox, a former Christ theKing school teacher. The Pavilion servesas the site for the annual “Fall Fest,” aDeacon Rollie Ellis, Father Rick Spicer, Archbishop ThomasMurphy, Father Andrew Bullwinkel, Confirmation, 1995Parishioners discovered new ways tolive their faith. From the mid 1980s tothe late 1990s, the parish, through theinteraction of the Social JusticeCommittee, provided valuable financialsupport for medical equipment and amedical clinic in the rural village ofTumbalá, Chiapas, Mexico. ParishionerPete Antoncich was the coordinator ofthis effort for many years. Heattempted at least three visits to thevillage and was successful at least onetime. On his other attempts, weatherprevented access to the remoteterritory. It wasduring this time that our communityboasted over 1,100 registered families. However, by 1995, only 944 familieswere registered and it seemed thattough times had befallen the Parish.Once again, the parish family rose tothe challenge. They filled the vacuumwith active laity.Father Andy named the convent inhonor of Sister Valerie Brannan, whohad served as a Mother Superior of theSisters of the Good Shepherd. Plans forthe use of the convent began to takeshape. He also designated to the ParishLibrary as “theDeLongLibrary,” inhonor of SisterEileen DeLong.Sister Eileenhad been veryinvolved withthe AdultReligiousEducationprograms atChrist the King.Sister Eileen DeLongThe loss of a section of the convent roofduring the winter of 1998 did not slowthe renovation of the Brannan House. The kitchen and dining room were soonconverted into the Extended CareFacility, and the front room wastransformed into a meeting room. TheChapel was renovated to accommodatea small group of worshippers. In 1997, theSisters of theGood Shepherdleft Christ theKing. Thedeparture of theSisters, whohad been soactive in thedaily running ofthe parish, left ahuge void.Sister Valerie Brannan, June 1997The Fitzgerald Room was given a freshcoat of paint, anew floor, andnew carpeting. Also during1997, FatherAlberto Cerezowas assigned asParochial Vicarto the CristoRey Community.Father Alberto Cerezo

We needed to reach beyondour parish boundaries.“Catholic education at the turn of themillennium in Seattle,” quoting ourPastoral Life Director, Patty, “mustaccomplish two tasks. The first is thatof conserving the Catholic tradition andvalues by forming young people in theCatholic imagination…this cornerstonemust permeate the very environment ofour schools. The second task isprophetic. We must teach youngpeople how to live out thissacramentality during interestingtimes….” The school successfullyraised monies during Annual FundCampaigns to help maintain affordabletuition levels. The principals, staff, andsome very dedicated volunteers workedtogether to realize the tasks describedby Patty (enrollment was not increasingand something had to be done toachieve that). It was determined that in order toincrease the size of the schoolpopulation, the school needed to offerchildcare for the very young; ages twoand one half to five. Thus, the CaritasChildcare Center concept was born.By June of 2004, work on the Centerbegan. This necessitated that theKindergarten be relocated within theschool facility and that the SchoolLibrary be moved to the BrannanHouse.Thenumberofregisteredfamiliesin theparish in2004 was899.TheHispanicDr. Maryann Johnston, Father WardOakshott, Patty Repikoff, Father Arturo,S.J.
