Awards and HonorsBerger Award Winners<strong>Cumberland</strong> College president, JamesH. Taylor, presented two <strong>Cumberland</strong>College seniors, LeeAnn Ruf and ChristianKey with <strong>the</strong> prestigious Berger Award during<strong>the</strong> commencement ceremony Saturday,May 11, 20<strong>02</strong>. The Berger Award is presentedeach year to <strong>the</strong> outstanding maleand female student <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> graduating classwho have excelled in academics and serviceand show exceptional potential for <strong>the</strong>future.Christian Key is <strong>the</strong> son <strong>of</strong> James andChristian Key Dottie Key <strong>of</strong> Williamsburg. A biologymajor and chemistry minor, Christian plansto someday attend medical school. While at <strong>Cumberland</strong>, Christian hasmaintained a cumulative 4.0 GPA, making <strong>the</strong> dean’s and president’s listsevery semester since enrolling in college.Christian is a five time All-American in track and field and a member <strong>of</strong><strong>the</strong> two-time NAIA Championship relay team that was ranked 12th in <strong>the</strong>world in 1999. He has also been a STAR in <strong>the</strong> Insights program for 2 yearsand a teaching assistant in <strong>the</strong> chemistry department during <strong>the</strong> fall semester<strong>of</strong> 2001. Christian also raised money and collected large numbers <strong>of</strong> usedrunning shoes to send to runners in Kenya who could not afford shoes. Inaddition to <strong>the</strong>se activities he has organized a leaf-raking ministry for seniorcitizens in <strong>the</strong> Williamsburg community. Christian spent <strong>the</strong> summer <strong>of</strong>2001 in London, England, as a research assistant in an exercise physiology labat South Bank <strong>University</strong>.Christians additional honors include receiving a presidential scholarshipin 1998; induction into <strong>the</strong> Alpha Lambda Delta Freshman Honor Societyin 1999; serving as vice president <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Beta Beta Beta Biology HonorSociety in 2001; and was an Academic All-American in 2001 and 20<strong>02</strong>.LeeAnn is <strong>the</strong> daughter <strong>of</strong> Gary and Donna Ruf from Connersville,Indiana. A pre-med major in biology and chemistry, she has been active inBeta Beta Beta, biology honor society, this year serving as president. She hasbeen a Knight Mentor, working for three years with an at-risk student whonow in high school is achieving successes both in <strong>the</strong> classroom and in socialdevelopment. In addition to <strong>the</strong>se activities, Lee Ann has volunteered in <strong>the</strong>biology department, played in <strong>the</strong> Pep Band,worked with Mountain Outreach, and hasdone volunteer work in her hometown.While maintaining a 4.0 grade point average,LeeAnn is involved in organizing a scienceoutreach program for elementary studentsteaching <strong>the</strong> message “science isn’t just fornerds.”LeeAnn also received <strong>the</strong> George S.Munro Prize for Excellence in Pre-MedicalStudies. This award is given in honor <strong>of</strong>George S. Munro, a pastor and long-timeboard member at <strong>Cumberland</strong> College, by his LeeAnn Rufson, Dr. Roger Munro, and daughter in law,Nancy K. Munro. It recognizes <strong>the</strong> graduating pre-medical student who hasachieved <strong>the</strong> highest grade point average through his or her college career. In<strong>the</strong> fall, LeeAnn will enroll at ei<strong>the</strong>r Indiana <strong>University</strong> or <strong>the</strong> <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong>Louisville School <strong>of</strong> Medicine.Angel Unaware<strong>Cumberland</strong> College honored several outstanding students Monday April29, 20<strong>02</strong>, during <strong>the</strong> Honors Day convocation service. Honors Day, heldannually in <strong>the</strong> O. Wayne Rollins Center on <strong>the</strong> <strong>Cumberland</strong> College campus,recognizes students who have excelled academically throughout <strong>the</strong> school year.LeeAnn Ruf was awarded <strong>the</strong> Angel Unaware Award. LeeAnn is <strong>the</strong> firstperson to receive this distinguished award. The award has been set aside torecognize a <strong>Cumberland</strong> College student who selflessly helps o<strong>the</strong>rs throughacts and deeds <strong>of</strong> kindness, who gives <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>mselves far beyond what isexpected, who is always <strong>the</strong>re to lend a helping hand, and who does so withoutexpecting recognition. Lu<strong>the</strong>r and Rosemary Smith’s employees at JordanDrug, Inc. instituted <strong>the</strong> award in <strong>the</strong> Smiths honor. Earnings are to be givento a campus organization in <strong>the</strong> name <strong>of</strong> each year’s award recipient.The Smiths are good friends <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> College. They are responsible for <strong>the</strong>commissioning <strong>of</strong> two beautiful domes at <strong>the</strong> College; one inside <strong>the</strong><strong>Cumberland</strong> Inn and ano<strong>the</strong>r inside <strong>the</strong> Grace Crum Rollins Fine ArtsCenter.
