Awards and Honors20<strong>02</strong> Faculty/Staff Awards<strong>Cumberland</strong> College held <strong>the</strong> 10th annual Faculty and StaffRecognition Dinner on Saturday, April 27, 20<strong>02</strong>. Three members<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> faculty and staff were honored with awards <strong>of</strong> meritfor <strong>the</strong>ir commitment and service to <strong>the</strong> college.Ms. Barbara Cox, wife <strong>of</strong> Hoyt Cox andmo<strong>the</strong>r to Jessica and Courtney, received <strong>the</strong>Service Award for full-time administratorsand non-teaching staff. <strong>Cumberland</strong> alumnusMike Duncan, class <strong>of</strong> 1971, sponsorsthis award. Ms. Cox who currently works asassistant registrar, has served <strong>the</strong> College inmany capacities for <strong>the</strong> past 19 years, as asecretary in student services and also as assistantmanager in <strong>the</strong> campus bookstore.Performing her many and varied duties in<strong>the</strong> Office <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Registrar, she comes in contactwith almost every student dealing withMs. Barbara Coxregistration, planned programs, dropping andadding courses, to <strong>the</strong> final goal <strong>of</strong> picking up a diploma. As a supervisor for <strong>the</strong>registrar staff and workstudy students she has gained great respect from her coworkers.“Barb is a very caring person and probably one <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> most compassionatepeople I have ever known. Barb truly wants to help and be <strong>of</strong> service toall who cross her path during <strong>the</strong> day,” one <strong>of</strong> her co-workers reveals, “All <strong>of</strong><strong>the</strong>se traits, and many more, truly make her an asset at <strong>Cumberland</strong> College.”Dr. Garland Young was presented <strong>the</strong>William T. Miles Community ServiceAward for his dedication to <strong>the</strong> College andhis service in <strong>the</strong> community and localchurches. At Williamsburg IndependentSchool he has given much time to <strong>the</strong> academicteams, including moderating manymatches. In city government he has served asa member <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> committee for Blightedand Deteriorated Properties. He currentlyserves as a member <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Ethics Committeeat Baptist Regional Medical Center. In addition,he has actively worked with <strong>the</strong>Dr. Garland YoungAppalachian College Association and supervises<strong>the</strong> ACA Virtual Center for Religion and Philosophy.Young, husband <strong>of</strong> Darlene Young and fa<strong>the</strong>r to Lindsay, assists at FirstBaptist Church by teaching Sunday School, serving as a deacon, and singingin <strong>the</strong> choir. He has served twice as interim pastor at First Baptist Church,Jellico, TN, and has preached and led Bible studies in o<strong>the</strong>r area churches.Dr. Julie Tan is <strong>the</strong> recipient <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Class <strong>of</strong> 1936 Award for Excellencein Teaching. An alumnus <strong>of</strong> <strong>Cumberland</strong>, Dr. Tan returned in 1991 to teachorganic chemistry. Not only is she dedicated to her students but also to herhusband, Chin Tan <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> business administration department, and her sonsWilliam and Christian.Colleagues mention her creativity andenthusiasm in <strong>the</strong> classroom. A faculty colleaguedescribed Dr. Tan as <strong>Cumberland</strong>College’s “greatest hidden treasure.” Studentsrecognize her knowledge <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> material shepresents. One student wrote, “[she] rarelyhas to consult <strong>the</strong> book and handles <strong>the</strong> mostprobing questions with ease.” Students arechallenged to excel as well. One studentexplained that her examinations “were some<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> hardest I have taken because <strong>the</strong>ystressed <strong>the</strong> need for a deep understanding <strong>of</strong><strong>the</strong> concepts.” Her classroom is not confined Dr. Julie Tanto <strong>the</strong> campus. On several occasions she hasjoined forces with teachers at Williamsburg Independent School.In addition to her work in <strong>the</strong> classroom and laboratory, she has publishedresearch in scholarly journals. As a faculty sponsor <strong>of</strong> PresidentialScholar Research, she has directed talented students in <strong>the</strong> completion <strong>of</strong>major research projects.Fine Arts Center — Foyer DedicationOn Monday, April 15th, <strong>Cumberland</strong>College friend and supporter Mrs. JoanCralle Day, Louisville was honored during adedication ceremony held in <strong>the</strong> Joan DayFoyer, located inside <strong>the</strong> College’s fine artsbuilding.Joan Day, a well-known philanthropist in<strong>the</strong> Louisville area and across <strong>the</strong>Commonwealth, is <strong>the</strong> president <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>Cralle Foundation <strong>of</strong> Louisville, KY. SheMrs. Joan Day holds degrees from both, Indiana <strong>University</strong>and <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> Louisville as well as anhonorary doctorate <strong>of</strong> laws degree from <strong>Cumberland</strong> College. She serveson many boards <strong>of</strong> charitable institutions and has served on <strong>the</strong> St.Mat<strong>the</strong>w’s Episcopal Church, Louisville vestry committee.The Cralle Foundation is a family foundation established by LeeE. Cralle, Day’s fa<strong>the</strong>r and well-known businessman and philanthropist.The Foundation supports a variety <strong>of</strong> initiatives with primaryemphasis on private education. The Cralle Chapel, used by <strong>the</strong><strong>Cumberland</strong> College family for convocation programs and <strong>the</strong> like, isalso named in recognition <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> support <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Cralle Foundationand Mrs. Joan Day.During his remarks, Dr. Taylor thanked Day for her commitmentand dedication to <strong>the</strong> college. Words <strong>of</strong> appreciation were also deliveredby <strong>Cumberland</strong> College Board <strong>of</strong> Trustees Chair, Dr. Judy Rose; VicePresident for Academic Affairs, Dr. Don Good; Department <strong>of</strong>Communication and Theatre Arts Chair, Dr. Keith Semmel;Department <strong>of</strong> Music Chair, Dr. Jeff Smoak; and <strong>Cumberland</strong> senior,Amy Stroud, a senior majoring in communication.9
