WORKFORCE DEVELOPMENT AND PROFESSIONAL GROWTHRecruitment and RetentionBaptist Health has developeda comprehensive program torecruit, train and retain the bestnurses. As a result, significantinroads continued to be made inaddressing the national nursingshortage, with Baptist Healthcutting its nursing vacancy rateto 10 percent, compared with astatewide nursing vacancy rate of15 percent, according to a FloridaHospital Association survey. Wealso purchased and renovated a199-unit apartment complexnear Baptist Hospital to expandthe temporary housing availableto newly hired nurses. Theeconomic crisis in 2009 helped tofurther cut the nursing vacancyrate to 4 percent, as some nursesput off retirement or returned tothe workforce.Nurse ScholarsIn 2001, Baptist Healthlaunched our innovative ScholarsProgram, a crucial and effectivecomponent of our recruitmentand retention plan. Each year,about 210 new nursing studentsbecome Nurse Scholars, receivingscholarships for clinical and classroominstruction in partnershipwith a community college oruniversity. In addition, experiencedBaptist Health nurses guide andmentor students on-site. In returnfor receiving the scholarship,Nurse Scholars commit to workat a Baptist Health affiliate. Sincethe program started, we haveaccepted more than 1,600 nursingstudents in the continuallyexpanding program.Baptist Health has formednursing education partnershipsfor entry-level registered nurseswith Miami Dade College, BarryUniversity, Nova SoutheasternUniversity and Florida KeysNurse Scholars have classroom instruction at local colleges and universities, as well as at Baptist Health hospitals.BAPTIST HEALTH 6 NURSING REPORT
