So whileyou’re browsing, sign up for an event, get to know some of the other members, and recruit a few new ones while you’re at it.This issue of the Blues News would like to feature the guitar player andsongwriter from Nashville, Tennessee, Scott Holt. Scott was inspired to playguitar as a result of attending a Jimi Hendrix concert in Tampa, Florida when hewas 12 years old. His father took him to that concert which ended up changinghis life, guiding him to live his dream. Inspired by Buddy Guy, Jimi Hendrix, and yes, Prince, he managed to meet up with Buddy Guy and jam with himfrom time to time. Then one day out of the blue, Holt received a phone callasking if he would want to play in Buddy Guy’s band. What sane personwould turn that down? After touring with Buddy Guy worldwide for 10 years,Scott had released his second solo album Dark of the Night, which featuredmusicians from both Jimi Hendrix’s and Stevie Ray Vaughan’s bands, and gotpeople’s attention. Scott went on to release From Lettsworth to Legend: ATribute to Buddy Guy. His first release, “Messing with the Kid,” has someexcellent guitar work on it, but my personal favorite has to be “Chipped FrontTooth.” Scott is a great vocalist and lead guitarist that everyone should makean attempt to see live. He refers to the blues as “a supreme form of prayer.” I’veseen him in Hampton Roads twice, and was surprised at the low attendance atboth J.M. Randalls in Williamsburg and the Tap House in Norfolk. I’m sure thatthe first I ever heard of Scott Holt was on the radio station 88.7 one afternoon. As usual, I promptly called Jerry Carter to find out some details about thealbum and the artist, and headed over to Birdland to pick up the CD.I’ll see you around town at an NBN event in the near future.Jeff Karr, 2012 Presidentpresident@natchelblues.orgJULY/AUGUST 2012 • www.NatchelBlues.orgCONTENTSAd Rates..................................................... 4Membership Discounts.............................. 4Interview with Music Makers .................... 5Blues Heaven ....................................... 6, 7Blues CD Reviews.......................... 8, 16, 17July/August Blues Birthdays...................... 8River City Blues IBC Winners................... 9July Calendar.............................................. 9Blues At The Beach Lineup......................10Blues Around Town...................................11Blues At The Beach Volunteering.............11Blues Interview with Larry Berwald..........12First Friday Concerts.................................13New Members............................................13Company Members...................................13Corporate Sponsors..................................132012 Blues Music Awards Winners ....... 142012 Blues Music Awards ...................... 15Weekly Blues Jams...................................16NBN Mission..............................................16Blues Radio Shows...................................17Blues Bands in Hampton Roads..............18Newsletter Deadlines.................................18Membership Form.....................................18Recipient of theKeeping The BluesAlive Award forBlues Organizationof the Year 1998CD WINNERSYou may be a winner!Random monthly drawings pickedfrom the hat of New & RenewingMembers receive a FREE Blues CD.MAYRichard NoyesJUNEJerry Carter3

BLUES INTERVIEW - Music Makers Rock SchoOlTell us a little about yourselves. We are located in the Hilltop area of Virginia Beach. We opened ourdoors in Dec. 2009. We are a traditional “mom-n-pop” shop, ownedand operated by my wife and I. We did incorporate the beginningof this year (2012). We have approximately 75 students per weekthat come through our store. There are 6 instructors here that teachdrums, guitar, piano, bass, violin, upright bass, trumpet, vocals, banjo, clarinet, and saxophone. We also offer Rock School! That programoffers kids the opportunity to play in a band, learn songs & performat the end of the 8-week session. What motivated the two of you to get into this line of work? Our love for music and I’m a natural-born teacher/coach. I’ve beenteaching drums throughout my life and I’ve tried other careers andfinally decided that this is what I was meant to do.Were there any times where you had doubts that you wouldmake it? Or doubts that you made the right career choice?Of course we had doubts whether we would “make-it” - theeconomy is a huge factor in determining our financial success.Overall, what we found is when you put out a good product andyou care about your customers, the business ultimately does well.We never doubted that we made the right career choice. What is the most fun or most rewarding part of your day?Just being involved with the development and shared experienceof all the kids & adults actually performing songs. Our motto is “Wetake our students from the lesson room to the stage” - and watchingthat happen is the greatest reward!Tell us about some of the bands that have formed bystudents who met at your school. We have formed or been involved with the formation of manybands. From The Renegades, Ziplock, Nova 6 - and many more. Mostrecently, Soulshine. Soulshine is a new & exciting adult blues bandthat formed with a couple of dads in our Rock School program. They’ll be the opening act for my band, DEJA, at the Jewish Mother,Hilltop this Saturday (6/9).How do you market your services? Direct mail, word ofmouth, advertising in paper, on radio, on TV?We’ve tried commercial forms of advertising (radio, mass mailers),but nothing is better than word-of-mouth. And like I said earlier, ifyou’re putting out a quality product, people will talk about it, forsure. Is there an average length of lessons? In other words doyou have year-long contracts, or how does that work? Our private lessons run for half-an-hour, usually scheduled once aweek. The student learns enough in that 30 minutes to keep thembusy practicing at home till their next lesson. We don’t require ourcustomers to sign contracts. We have had some students for over 2years, some others for only a few months. It all depends.Do you produce CD’s?We have a recording studio in-house where we record solo artistsor full bands. We also film videos in our in-house theater. Here’s alink to a video that was shot in our theater: www.youtube.com/user/DEJAbandAlthough we do many things at Music Makers (recordings, video,buy/sell new & used equipment, etc.), our main focus is onteaching private lessons & Rock School to children and adults.Teaching is our greatest asset and also brings us the greatestrewards. Over the years I’ve found that you can have a greatmusician who just can’t communicate effectively as a teacher. We’revery proud of the fact that Music Makers focuses on the individualstudent’s needs and constantly strives to help every student feelgreat about their learning experience and enjoy music to its fullest. Thanks Drew!~ By Jack Campbellwww.musicmakersvb.comwww.facebook.com/musicmakersvbDo you have a busy time of year? Slack time?We haven’t really experienced a definite slow time or busy time. There’s a consistent ebb and flow. We definitely feel the surge whenwe have Rock School sign-ups 4 times a year.Editor’s Note: Music Makers isproviding backline equipmentfor NBN’s IBC at Jewish Mother-Hilltop on July 29th.JULY/AUGUST 2012 • www.NatchelBlues.org5

BLUES HEAVEN - Levon HelmLevon Helm, singer and drummer for The Band, died on April 19th in New York of throat cancer. He was 71.In the late ‘90s, Helm – whose singing anchored Band classics like “The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down,” “Up on Cripple Creek,” “Rag MamaRag,” and “The Weight” – was diagnosed with throat cancer and underwent 28 radiation treatments, eventually recovering his voice. In recentweeks, however, Helm had canceled a number of showsBorn May 26, 1940 in Arkansas, Helm was literally a witness to the birth of rock & roll; as a teenager, he saw Elvis Presley, Little Richard, JohnnyCash and Jerry Lee Lewis in concert and was inspired to play drums after seeing Lewis’ drummer, Jimmy Van Eaton. (Helm went on to playmandolin and other stringed instruments as well). In 1960, Helm joined the backup band of rockabilly wildman Ronnie Hawkins – a groupthat would eventually include Robbie Robertson, Richard Manuel, Rick Danko and Garth Hudson, all futuremembers of The Band. The musicians broke from Hawkins to form their own group – their names included the Crackers and Levon& the Hawks – but it was their association with Bob Dylan that cemented their reputation. After Dylan saw thegroup in a club, he invited Helm and guitarist Robertson to join his electric band. “Bob Dylan was unknown tous,” Helm wrote in his 1993 memoir This Wheel’s on Fire. “I knew he was a folksinger and songwriter whosehero was Woody Guthrie. And that’s it.” Robertson and Helm were in Dylan’s electric band for his controversial, frequently booed show at New York’s Forest Hills Tennis Stadium. Afterward, various members of The Bandplayed on Dylan’s Blonde on Blonde and toured with him in 1966. They also recorded the landmark BasementTapes. In 1976, at Robertson’s urging, the Band broke up after its farewell concert, known as “The Last Waltz.” TheBand was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 1994.BLUES HEAVEN - Michael “Iron Man” BurksMichael “Iron Man” Burks, July 30th, 1957 - May 6, 2012Guitarist, vocalist, songwriter Michael “Iron Man” Burks died in Atlanta on May 6, 2012. He was 54 years old. He was returning from a tour of Europe and collapsed atHartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport. He was rushed to South Fulton Medical Center where he could not be revived. The preliminary diagnosis for cause ofdeath was a heart attack.Michael “Iron Man” Burks earned his moniker by his hours-long, intensely physical performances, fearsome guitar attack, and tough, smoky vocals. He also earned it by thethousands of miles he personally logged behind the wheel of his touring van. Burks was a true modern blues hero whose music was driven by an intense, blue-collar workethic that had won him well-deserved national and international recognition. His instantly identifiable guitar sound and his live charisma earned him four Blues Music Awardnominations. He won the 2004 Living Blues magazine Critics’ Award for Best Guitarist. Burks received a nomination for the 2012 Blues Music Award for Best Guitarist.Born in Milwaukee in 1957, Burks grew up immersed in the blues, and learned to play guitar at an early age. His family moved to Camden, Arkansas in the early 1970s.There, Burks and his siblings helped their father build the Bradley Ferry Country Club -- a 300-seat juke joint. By this time Michael was fronting his own band as wellas backing several of the blues and R&B greats that passed through town. Burks left music to raise a family and returned toperforming blues in the 1990s.After self-releasing his first CD in 1997, Burks signed with Chicago’s Alligator Records in 2001 and released three criticallyacclaimed albums. GuitarOne named his debut album, Make It Rain, one of the Top 200 greatest guitar recordings of all time. Hehas toured the world, headlining blues festivals, concert halls and clubs. His status as an Arkansas musical hero was confirmed byhis receipt of the prestigious Sonny Payne Award for Blues Excellence in 2006, presented by the Delta Cultural Center, and by hismultiple headlining appearances at The Arkansas Blues & Heritage Festival. Burks had just finished recording his fourth AlligatorCD, which is due for release at the end of July 2012.“Burks has learned to burn his own signature onto almost everything he touches. The aching passion of Burks’ voice and theprobing intensity of his guitar lines come together in a searing evocation of desire and desperation. Burks has the ability and theimagination to fuse the best of the old and the new.”--Living Blues6 www.NatchelBlues.org • JULY/AUGUST 2012

Legendary bass player ‘Duck’ Dunn dies in TokyoBLUES HEAVEN - Donald “Duck” DunnDonald “Duck” Dunn, the bassist who helped create the gritty Memphis soul sound at Stax Records in the 1960s as part of the legendary group Booker T. & the MGs and contributed to such classics as “In theMidnight Hour,” ‘”Hold On, I’m Coming” and “Sitting on the Dock of the Bay,” died May 13, 2012 at 70. Dunn, whose legacy as one of the most respected session musicians in the business also included work withJohn Belushi and Dan Aykroyd’s Blues Brothers as well as with Levon Helm, Eric Clapton, Neil Young and Bob Dylan, died while on tour in Tokyo.News of his death was posted on the Facebook site of his friend and fellow musician Steve Cropper, who was on the same tour. Cropper said Dunn died in his sleep. Dunn was born in Memphis, Tenn., in 1941,and according to the biography on his official website, was nicknamed for the cartoon character by his father. His father, a candy maker, did not want him to be a musician.“He thought I would become a drug addict and die. Most parents in those days thought music was a pastime, something you did as a hobby, not a profession,” Dunn said. But by the time Dunn was in high school,he was in a band with Cropper. Cropper left to become a session player at Stax, the Memphis record company that would become known for its soul recordings and artists such as Otis Redding, Sam & Dave,Isaac Hayes and the Staples Singers.Dunn soon followed Cropper and joined the Stax house band, also known as Booker T. & the MGs. It was one of the first racially integrated soul groups, with two whites (Dunn on bass and Cropper on guitar)and two blacks (Booker T. Jones on organ and Al Jackson on drums), and was later inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. The group had its heyday in the 1960s as backup for various Stax artists. Dunnplayed on Redding’s “Respect” and “Sitting on the Dock of the Bay,” Sam & Dave’s “Hold On, I’m Coming” and Wilson Pickett’s “In the Midnight Hour.”Booker T. & the MGs had its own hits as well, including “Hang ‘Em High,” “‘Soul-Limbo” and, before Dunn joined the band, the cool 1962 instrumental “GreenOnions.” “I would have liked to have been on the road more, but the record company wanted us in the studio. Man, we were recording almost a hit a dayfor a while there,” Dunn said. In the 1970s, the group’s members drifted apart. Jackson was killed in Memphis in 1975 by an intruder in his home.Cropper and Dunn reunited when they joined Aykroyd and Belushi’s Blues Brothers band and appeared in the 1980 Blues Brothers movie. “How couldanybody not want to work with John and Dan? I was really kind of hesitant to do that show, but my wife talked me into it,” Dunn said in a 2007 interviewwith Vintage Guitar magazine, “and other than Booker’s band, that’s the most fun band I’ve ever been in.”Dunn also did session work on recordings by Clapton, Young, Dylan, Rod Stewart, Stevie Nicks and Tom Petty, according to his discography. Dunn once saidthat he and Cropper were “like married people.” “I can look at him and know what he’ll order for dinner,” he said. “When we play music together we bothknow where we’re going.” Dunn received a lifetime achievement Grammy in 2007. He is survived by his wife, June; a son, Jeff; and a grandchild, Michael, said Michael Leahy, Dunn’s agent.http://www.duckdunn.comSoul-Blues Singer Lou Pride Passes.BLUES HEAVEN - Lou PrideAnother classic soul-blues voice has been stilled with the announcement of the passing of Severn Records artist, Lou Pride, who died in his hometown ofChicago on June 5, 2012 of natural causes while in hospice care. Pride had undergone numerous medical challenges for many years, having suffered severalheart attacks and additional circulatory problems.Over the course of many months last year and into early 2012, Lou Pride had been recording a new album for Severn Records, and that CD, Ain’t No More Lovein this House, will be released in the fall. Lou Pride’s powerful soul-drenched voice will be heard on a number of new songs, as well as an amazing version ofthe Simply Red classic, “Holding Back the Years,” which will leave an indelible legacy of the artist’s career.Severn Records released three prior CDs on Lou Pride, including Words of Caution in 2002 and Keep on Believing in 2005, as well as compilation of some ofhis greatest early singles and unreleased tracks, titled The Memphis/El Paso Sessions (1970-73). That CD included a number of tracksrecorded at Willie Mitchell’s famous Royal Recording Studios in Memphis and featured him backed the Hi Records house band of TeenieHodges (guitar) Charles Hodges (organ), Leroy Hodges (bass) and Howard Grimes (drums), along with the Memphis Horns and MemphisStrings.Although not as widely known as some of his contemporaries, such as Bobby “Blue” Bland, Little Milton and Johnnie Taylor, Lou Pride’stalent and soulfulness were the equal of any of those iconic singers. He was known for his electrifying live shows and a vocal deliverythat went from a whisper to a commanding growl.Born George Lou Pride on May 24, 1944 in Chicago, he grew up on the Windy City’s north side and first experienced singing gospelmusic, attending the Baptist Church pastored by Nat King Cole’s father. Watching a live B.B. King performance converted Pride, however, and he was soon on his way singing soul and blues on the Chitlin’ Circuit throughout the South and Midwest. His first acclaimed singleswere recorded in the early ‘70s while living in El Paso, Texas, and he soon relocated to New Mexico. He toured early on with such artistsas B.B. King, Clarence Carter, Betty Wright, Koko Taylor and Kool & the Gang. After returning home to Chicago, he was introduced to the great Curtis Mayfield, who recorded him for his Curtom Records label. Helater recorded for a number of other labels, including several albums for Ichiban in the ‘90s before hooking up with Severn Records atthe turn of the 21st century.JULY/AUGUST 2012 • www.NatchelBlues.org7

On the cover of this CD was a photo of a cigarbox guitar. Okay, you’ve got my interest. Now let’s see who these guys are. Nobody I’veever heard of (which is actually a plus.) Any harmonica players? Oooh wait. Jason Ricci? I’ll be giving this one alisten. And I’m glad I made that decision. JP Soars is awesome. Competing as JP Soars & the Red Hots in the bandcategory, Soars won the 2009 IBC in Memphis. He also took the IBC Best Guitarist Award. It’s no wonder someoneonce said, “Soars can stroke, persuade, bend, and stretch notes from places other guitarists haven’t even heard of.”His influences include: T-Bone Walker, Johnny Guitar Watson, Guitar Slim, Muddy Waters, Jessie Mae Hemphill andDjango Reinhardt. Here are some of the songs I really liked: “Doggin’”-–Oh yeah. Dis one got da funk fo sho. Translation: this cut hasa very infectious beat. It would be hard for a person not to start moving to the rhythm once they hear it. “SweetBlood Call”- - This old Louisiana Red tune is certainly the most chauvinistic song in music history. So try listening tothe music, the feeling, the emotion, and try not to dwell on the message. “Chasing Whiskey With Whiskey”--What isit about blues songs and whiskey that go together like…I don’t know…bees with honey?Blues CD Reviews - Jack CampbellMIKEY JRIt Ain’t Hard To Tell8th Train Records 8 TH 090www.mikeyjunior.comSinger songwriter and harmonica whiz Mikey Junior hails from EasternPennsylvania and came into the blues by way of his father’s extensive recordcollection. His harmonica heroes include: Steve Guyger (another eastern PA native),William Clarke, and George “Harmonica” Smith. Harp guys who listen to this CDwould say, “Yeah, I can hear all that.” Mikey is helped out by bandmates Matt Daniels on guitar, JimmyPritchard on electric bass, and Adam Stranburg on drums. Here are some of the songs you might like: “It Ain’t Hard To Tell,” the title cut, is classic fat toned ChicagoBlues. It’s a song about a man loving the wrong woman. He’s hooked for sure, just not too proud ofhimself. “Chitlin Con Carne” is a nice chromatic harmonica take on the classic Kenny Burrell jazzinstrumental.“You All Alone” has a west coast swing style to it. Daniels really slays the guitar on this cut. “Hand Jive” -this version of the Johnny Otis original is heated up beyond hot. Anyone trying to do the hand jive alongwith this number will likely lose a finger. “Telephone Blues” – this is where the George Smith influenceis so evident. In a recent online conversation I was involved with, the original was ranked in the top tenharmonica songs of all time. BLUES INTERVIEW - Larry BerwaldLarry Berwald is a guitarist, songwriter, producer, guitar teacher, and theowner of Rosewood Guitar Repair, located inside the School of Rock at430 Boush St., Norfolk, VA. He repairs guitars, teaches guitar, and gigs outtwo to three nights per week. He currently gigs with Bobby “BlackHat”Walters and Seth Stainback, and is occasionally seen with LawrenceLambert, Mike Aiken, Karl Werne and others from time to time.He was born in Virginia and moved to Florida with his family when veryyoung. He went to high school and a few years of college in Florida. Thenthe call of music became too strong to ignore.Tell me about your childhood. Was yours a musical household? Did yourparents or aunts and uncles play music? Both of my parents and my maternal grandmother were professional musicians andteachers so I heard lots of traditional classical music around the house, but my dadalso dug some swing and jazz, and was a pretty big calypso music fan. When did you feel like you wanted to be a musician?I had taken a few piano and trumpet lessons, but it was the early Beatles thattricked my trigger and sent me running to guitar. So how did you get back into the music scene? The business was overwhelming so the family agreed to sell off to another personand I was able to retire around year 2000. Inspired by local guitar virtuoso, StephenBennett, I took an interest in fingerstyle acoustic guitar playing, something Icould do without the time consumption of a band, and in 2001 I released a CDof solo guitar music. Then, itching to play some electric guitar, I began to showup at Goodfellas open mic nights, and jamming with local players. The BobbyBlackHat Band evolved from this, and led to three records with him, two of which Iproduced. Since then I’ve been fortunate to perform and/or record with many areaartists including Jackie Scott, Mike Aiken, Lawrence Lambert, Julie Clark and SethStainback to name a few. I was fortunate to co-produce Seth’s new record whichwas an excellent project with some great area players at Soul Haven Studios inVirginia Beach. We’ve talked about Blues, Rock, Acoustic, Indie/Americana. What othertypes of music do you enjoy?I really like jazz, western swing (steel guitar) and the American Songbook. My radiopresets also include a classical music station. I study jazz guitar techniques so I canincorporate them into my playing, but I don’t profess to be a jazz musician, as Iconsider that a high achievement.Did you take many lessons?Beatles songbooks with their cool chords taught me more than the couple lessonsI had, and soul music like Sam & Dave and Aretha taught me about feel and groove. When did your career start to form?Soon after I began playing at age 15, I lucked into a high school band that wastalented, well organized and disciplined, teaching me what it meant to behaveprofessionally as a musician. We were run by one of the kid’s dads, Chris Hess, whowas a dobro player and brother of Nashville gospel great, Jake Hess. Before I wasout of high school we also felt the blues in the loss of our drummer at age 17, whosuccumbed to Hodgkin’s disease. And when did the call of playing music take you on the road?Fat Chance Band was an original music, blues rock group out of Orlando, Florida, with whom I toured clubs through the southeast for several years, and madecontacts with Capricorn Records and the Macon, GA Allman Brothers scene, whichwas cooking in the mid-seventies. I was signed as a songwriter to Alan Walden,Phil Walden’s brother who had several of the great Southern Rock bands. Theseconnections helped me to get an audition in 1977 when Wet Willie was looking fora new guitarist. They had just signed with Epic Records when I got in the band, sofor three years there was lots of travel and recording. Epic dropped Wet Willie, butgave a solo contract to the singer, Jimmy Hall. I moved to Nashville from Atlanta, and wrote, recorded and toured with Jimmy for the next three years, also doing afair amount of session work in town when we weren’t on the road. How many students do you have?I have about eight students now at the School of Rock, Norfolk--a mix of adults andschool kids. You have essentially three jobs. What parts of each job is your favorite?Really four--producing is my favorite because it’s the culmination of all my talentsand all my years of experience playing and recording music with some majorplayers and big time producers. When I play live gigs I love musical interactionwith good players, and the occasional transcendent moments that happen, not tomention the immediate gratification through applause. When I teach, I relish thoselight bulb moments when the student really gets something that was a mystery, orwas completely unknown to them. When I’m repairing guitars, those Zen momentswhen nothing exists but me and the guitar are priceless. I love to see a person’sreaction when they feel the difference in the way their guitar plays after I’veworked on it.Any advice to a musician that wants to produce a CD?Realize that you are not objective about your own music. Find someone to workwith you who will bring fresh ideas and insights, and that will very often improvethe results of the whole project. Collaboration does not mean compromising yourart.~ By Jack CampbellWhat were some of the highlights from those days?Lots of little show biz stories to tell…performing in London for CBS Records’convention, with an audience that included Mick Jagger, Ringo Starr, James Taylor,Boz Scaggs, meeting heroes like Jeff Beck, touring with great bands of the day likeAerosmith, Doobies, Bob Segar. Had a nice moment when touring with CharlieDaniels when Bonnie Raiit showed up in our dressing room singing a song I hadwritten with Jimmy. Got to jam with Gregg Allman, Dickie Betts, Steve Morse, andChuck Level. Why did it all come to an end?About the time that Epic Records non-renewed Jimmy’s contract, my father-in-lawinvited us to Hampton to join his government contracting business. At that point, the guitars went into the closet for some years because that was a huge, but veryinteresting undertaking.12 www.NatchelBlues.org • JULY/AUGUST 2012

We are not friends anymore…unless you go directly to Birdlandand buy this CD. I will be checking with each and every one of you personally. That ishow strongly I feel about this beautiful collaboration among Hart, Bonamassa, and KevinShirley (the producer). Hart and Bonamassa have crossed paths many times in their careersand in 2010 Bonamassa asked Hart to add her raw, powerful, and heartfelt vocals to a project he had envisioned. They chose 10 soul classics originally performed by some heavyweights of the music industry. Says Hart, “I was abit intimidated by such great material and musicians, but at the end of the day I feel very happy and grateful for thewhole experience.” And you too will be happy you purchased this CD. It will be in heavy rotation on your iPod,home or car for months, maybe years. This is one of those CD’s that you can take right to your iPod and uploadevery cut. No need to pick and choose. Just load the whole thing in there. So while all the songs are great, bear with me while I highlight my favorites. First and foremost, their version of “I’dRather Go Blind” is indeed the best cover of the Etta James original I have ever heard. This is goose bump materialmy friends. Then there’s the Delaney and Bonnie classic “Well, Well.” This song features the only duet on the CDbetween Hart and Bonamassa. And I haven’t even begun to extol the virtues of Bonamassa’s guitar prowess. But alas, I’m out of room. Guess you’llhave to go and buy the CD.Blues CD Reviews - Jack CampbellSEAN COSTELLOAt His Best - LiveLandslide Records LDCD1040www.landsliderecords.comwww.seancostellofund.orgSean, Sean, Sean…you left us too soon, buddy. One day shy of your 30th birthday. We all loved you. You were at the top of your game, man. But we didn’t know yourdemons. Bipolar Disorder is a serious disease and sadly it took its toll on you. Sonow, in your honor, here is a CD that captures some of your best live performancesin the United States and France. Your guitar playing has been described as “fiercely traditional,” “possessedof jaw-dropping talents,” “relentless attack,” “undeniable beauty,” “transcendent,” and “fearless creativity.”Superlatives, yes, but all are accurate descriptions and so true. Sean, you’ll be happy to know that a portionof the proceeds from the sale of this CD will benefit the Sean Costello Fund for Bipolar Research. They included 17 of your greatest performances on this CD, but I particularly like--“I Get A Feeling,”recorded at an unnamed venue in Boston, MA. You must have channeled some of your groovy inner R&Bvibes that night. Wish I could have been there! “Can I Change My Mind” was recorded at the Double Doorin Charlotte back in 2002. Again, with the bluesy R&B soul. Wow! “Reconsider Baby” was captured atUpfront & Company in Marquette, MI. I’m pretty sure I heard Lowell Fulson cheering in the background. Ibet you guys are playing regularly together now.“Hold On This Time” was from your performance at The House of Blues in Cleveland in 2005. Soulful, tasteful, tight and smooth…those are what come to mind when I listen to this cut. I just wish you couldhave held on longer too, my friend.16 www.NatchelBlues.org • JULY/AUGUST 2012

Blues CD Reviews - Brian “The Bluesman” BeachumPINETOP PERKINSHeavenBlind Pig Records BPCD5145www.blindpigrecords.comBlind Pig Records released a real gem on April 17th, 2012. It’s a collection of previously unreleasedmaterial titled Heaven. It’s an appropriate title, since it could have been produced in Heaven. The CD isa collection of work from the recently passed Joseph William Perkins, a.k.a Pinetop Perkins, one of the last original MississippiDelta bluesmen. At 73 years young at the time of these recordings, Pinetop delivers his musical expertise with a range from solos to high-energyjams with an all-star backing band (with guest appearances by Willie “Big Eyes” Smith and Otis Clay). Unfortunately, Pinetoppassed away about a month after this session was recorded. Lucky for us this music was captured before his passing.Top picks from this “heavy-hitter” CD include notable genre standards such as “44 Blues,” “Sweet Home Chicago,” “Sitting on Topof the World,” “Willow Weep for Me,” “That’s All Right” and a few signature greats like “Pinetop’s Boogie Woogie” and “Pinetop’sBlues.” Pick up this great Blind Pig CD, stick it in, and let it roll. Close your eyes and see what Heaven could be like.BluesConnectAre you a Player looking for a Band? Do you have a Band andlooking for a Player? Looking for music or sound equipment?
