Pete plays all of theinstruments on his latest album, Blue Stew, and I had a chance to seehim again recently at the Chicago Blues Festival (see more on PistolPete inside this issue). His favorite album of mine is the 1995 release called Loaded. There are15 original songs on this album, and the guitar work is very incredible. The band’s website is www.guitargypsy.com. jackie scott performs in chicago - jeff karrJackie Scott performsat the Chicago Blues FestivalAs a small-time, hopelessly average guitar player, the most fun that I canever hope for is to play live at some “real” venue somewhere and show offa couple of guitar riffs that have been practiced over and over, and hopethat I don’t screw it up. Not the case for Hampton Roads’ Jackie Scott. My wife and I traveled to Chicago in June and got to see her performon the big stage at the Chicago Blues Festival. Jackie was part of the“Celebrating Women in Blues” performance, paying tribute to Koko Taylor. As we sat in the amphitheatre, and people were looking through theprogram waiting for the show to begin, Jackie was easily recognized bythe Chicago audience. When she came on stage, she blew the place away with songs like“Mother Nature,” “Voodoo Woman” and “Let the Juke Joint Jump.” Not only was Jackie dazzlinga huge audience with her powerful performance, but her efforts were also plastered all over theblues society tents that were raising awareness and money for children interested in the arts andmusical education. Go Jackie Go!... Meanwhile on Another StagE - jeff karrAt the Chicago blues festival, while Jackie Scottwas dazzling a different generation of blues loverswith a career advancing performance, this youngman was hitting the streets, literally. The WindyCity Blues Society (WCBS) held their IBC challengeout in the middle of the street at the festival.him perform live three times, but fresh off of therelease of his new album Blue Stew, this was thebest. He was gracious enough to accommodate ashort interview, so here is a little background onone of the best blues guitar players/songwritersthat I’ve ever seen.Pistol Pete was the Windy City’s 2011 IBC winner, and returned this year to be the headliner for the2012 challenge. What really impressed me aboutthis talented guitar slinger was his relationshipwith the local blues society. He seemed to befriends with all of thefolks at the WCBS, wasnice to all of the fans, and was anxious toparticipate in the event.Pistol Pete’s performancespoke for itself. I’ve seenFrom the Chicago area, Pistol Pete’s favorite placesto tour and perform are Japan and Italy, where hisband is always very well received. When I saw himseveral years ago in Key West, the posters read,“Where Jimi Hendrix meets the Blues.” And did itever. His influences include guitar greats such asJimi Hendrix, Steve Vai, Albert King, and believe itor not, Frank Zappa. Pistol Pete’s high energy andmesmerizing stage presence will captivate anyaudience. I highly recommend tracking him downon Facebook, watching his videos on You Tube, and seeing him live if you ever have the chance.SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER 2012 • www.NatchelBlues.org5

BLUES HEAVEN - KAY KAY GREENWADECATFOOD RECORDS ARTIST KAY KAY GREENWADE PASSES AFTER A LONG ILLNESS.Blues singer Kay Kay Greenwade died on July 9, at age 56 in an Odessa, Texas, nursing home. She had endured several health issues after sufferinga stroke in 2006, including diabetes and a brain tumor, and was unable to resume her career. Most of us may know of her band Kay Kay & the Rays, the band she fronted for many years.“Kay Kay was an amazing talent and a good friend,” said Bob Trenchard, head of Catfood Records. “You had to hear and see her live to realize howpowerful she was and the effect she could have on the crowd. I have talked to several former band members and all of us agree that while it is sadto think of what could have been had we been able to continue working together, we are glad to have had the opportunity to work with Kay Kayand know her.”Kay Kay was a gospel singer who was a choir member and an in-demand soloist before she began performing secular music with Kay Kay & theRays. Last November, Catfood Records released a 15-track compilation CD, The Best of Kay Kay & the Rays, to immense critical acclaim. Theretrospective included tracks from all three of the band’s recorded catalogue: Kay & the Rays Featuring AbnerBurnett (1999), Texas Justice (2001) and Big Bad Girl (2003).“The song ‘Big Bad Girl’ says, ‘she was six feet one with three inch heels.’ That was Kay Kay, the big woman withthe big voice who could bring the crowd to its feet cheering,” said the album’s liner notes. “The music of Kay Kay& the Rays was a fusion of soul, funk and blues. The lyrics were often social commentary.”Johnny Rawls produced the band’s second album, Texas Justice, in 2001, which gained the group nationalattention. In 2003, the band released its Big Bad Girl album, produced by multiple Grammy winner Jim Gaines, which received rave reviews, resulting in the Big Bad Girl CD hitting the top ten blues radio charts.Family tragedies caused the band to break up a few months after tours to Florida and California. The music on TheBest of Kay Kay & the Rays is a wonderful reminder that Kay Kay & the Rays really were a “seamless blend ofsoul and funk” as they were described by Blues Revue, and that Kay Kay Greenwade had “established herself as aleading light of contemporary blues” as noted by Living Blues.INTERNATIONAL BLUES CHALLENGE MEMPHIS, TN JAN 29-FEB 2, 2013The 29th International Blues Challenge is set to begin Tuesday, January 29, 2013 and conclude on SaturdayFebruary 2, 2013. I want to take what’s authentic and powerful about the music I grew up loving and bring in other influences without losingthe heart and conviction of it.”Li’l Ronnie’s Blues Harmonica RevueLi’l Ronnie & the Grand Dukes are, to quote one reviewer, “...the real deal! ... superb talents well versed in traditional blues.” They are led by harpist, singer/songwriter andHohner Harmonica endorsee Ronnie Owens. The REAL deal. The Incognito BrothersThe Incognito Brothers Blues Band was conceived by their late bandleader, Warren Seaburg, as an alternative to the parent band, Lost Then Found. Other members included Lloyd Bohlinger (drums, vocals), Dave Edwards (bass, vocals), and Ronny Parker (harp, vocals). They later added sister Terri McCallister on keyboards and vocals. After Warren’s passing, theymorphed into a 10-piece band that includes a horn section, fondly known as the “Beacon Brass.”In addition to Ronny, Dave Edwards, Terri and Lloyd, the band now includes Jeff LeMoine (lead guitar), Susan Hall (keyboards, vocals), Bob Leighton (percussion),David Christianson (saxophone), Keith Adkins (trumpet), and Mark Gregory (trombone). With his fourth release, My Kinda Blues is a powerful collection ofmostly original cuts with a few slamming covers thrown in for good measure. This catcan write, sing, and just play his fingers off on the guitar. I read one reviewer call him a “virtuoso guitar slinger.” AllI can say is this guy is just hot as pavement in July.Dennis is from Baltimore, MD, but sounds like he’s from Chicago. To give a nod to our recent International BluesChallenge (IBC) competition we just held at the Jewish Mother in Virginia Beach, Dennis won the IBC in 2004when he played with Zac Harmon. Dennis’ style covers many styles and ranges on the CD, from some funky bluesto a picking acoustic piece featuring Kenny Neal. The CD definitely works the styling of the three “K’s” (Albert,Freddie, and B.B.) and takes some definite influences from the three “J’s” (Hendrix, Johnny Winter, and JimmyPage). This is one of those CDs that you can put in and just let it roll right through till the end. Some top picks of mine arethe title track, “My Kinda Blues,” “Best That I Can Be,” “You Took My Baby” (a Texas style blues number that reallykicks with Guitar Shorty lending a hand on lead guitar (right channel!), “One More Dance,” a smooth lil’ number;and the nice, long jam, “Baltimore Blues.” Final word, you just can’t go wrong with this one, folks.NBN’s MISSION• Promote, perpetuate, andpreserve Blues music as a trueAmerican art form.• Develop and provide aneducational resource for thecommunity (i.e. schools, churches, civic organizations, etc.) as to the history andevolution of the Blues.• Disseminate information toand act as a network for Bluesmusicians and others interestedin the Blues, both locally andnationally.• Advocate and work toward anincrease in contributed supportfor the Blues in the GreaterHampton Roads area.Blues CD Reviews - Brian The Bluesman BeachumCEE CEE JAMESBlood Red BluesFWG Recordswww.ceeceejames.comLet’s get one thing straight right out of the gate, blues fans. This CD ain’t no walkin the park. It’s rough, hard, raw, drenched in cheap whisky and blue smoke with ahard dose of snakebite and broken heart. And that’s just a start, brothers and sisters.Cee Cee is the real deal when it comes to singing the blues. She’s got a voice thatwould put a Mack big rig 18-wheeler gravel hauler to shame. She’s been compared too often to the lateJanis Joplin, which you can hear in her voice, but I think she stands strong on her own two feet. This is Cee Cee’s fourth release. Some previous releases tried some funk, some pop and some good, raw liveblues. She won the Klamath, Oregon International Blues Challenge in 2009 and headed off to Memphis, TN.In 2010, FWG Records released her first CD Seriously Raw, a real powerhouse. But let’s get back to this one. Some of my favorite cuts on Blood Red Blues start with the title cut. “Let’s All Get Loose” will get everythingin your body movin’, “Cover Me Up With Love” is a really up number with a great piano backing, “ComfortOf A Good Heart” is one sweet roll, and “100 Ways To Make Love” speaks for itself. This is another one of those “just stick it in and let it play” CDs. Over and over and over. You’ll findsomething new each time it goes ‘round. Just watch out. This one just might cut ya.16 www.NatchelBlues.org • SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER 2012

Blues CD Reviews - Jack CampbellGEORGE THOROGOOD & THE DESTROYERS2120 South Michigan AvenueCapitol Recordsvwww.capitolrecords.comLocation: School of Rock - Anytown, USATeacher: Today class, we will review the latest release from George Thorogood & the Destroyers. Who remembers them?Class: SilenceTeacher: Really? Anyone? Anyone? Bueller?Bueller: George Thorogood was the front man and guitar slinger for a popular regional group that was thrust into the spotlightin the early ‘80s with their big hit “Bad To The Bone” which was followed quickly by “Move It On Over” and “Who Do You Love.”He is a huge baseball fan, played semi pro ball in the ‘70s, and was once quoted in a Rolling Stone Magazine interview as saying…Teacher: ALRIGHT! That’s quite enough, Bueller. Put a sock in it for Chrissakes.Bueller (meekly): Yes, Sir.Teacher: Now, who thinks that this CD by this ancient group is just another watered down, road weary rehash of the same old stuff presented in an effort to regainthe glory of lost youth.Class: We do!!!Teacher: AU CONTRAIRE my little French Toast sticks!!! You couldn’t be more wrong. George and the boys have lost none of their original Mojo. Mr. Thorogood’svoice is more powerful than ever. The musicianship is tight as a tick, top notch I’m tellin’ ya. Why, just listen to the drums on the cut “Bo Diddley” and tell me itdoesn’t make you feel like you are at Congo Square in New Orleans around the turn of the century. Primal doesn’t begin to describe the feelings they evoke. Then givea listen to the time honored classic “High Heeled Sneakers,” complete with none other than Buddy Guy lending a hand on guitar. And then there’s “Spoonful,” “MyBabe,” “Talk To Your Daughter,” and…Bueller: I’m still not sold. Sounds to me like they’re a bunch of aging rockers that needed to pay some overdue bills.Teacher: Shut up, Bueller! Get the wax out of your ears and listen up. (Teacher plays the CD. All the students start moving with the beat, and tapping out therhythms, and bobbing their heads. All except Bueller, who is standing in the corner with a dunce cap on.)Teacher: Okay, which was your favorite song and why?Cool Kid: Man, that last instrumental blew me away. Was that a remake of the Rolling Stones arrangement “2120 South Michigan Avenue”? The heavy Hammond B-3 organintro and the cool bass line overlaid with some of Thorogood’s diminished chords were whack! And when Charlie Musselwhite came in with that harp solo? Booyah!Blues CD Reviews - BETH JAROCKGAYE ADEGBALOLABlues In All FlavorsHot Toddy Music HTMCD 2220www.adegbalola.comGaye Adegbalola, co-founder of Saffire-the Uppity Blues Women, has made audiences ponder and laugh for years (in an “ooh…I can’t believe shesaid that!” way) with her suggestive, double entendre songwriting. It seems natural that this former 8th grade science teacher, Virginia Teacher ofthe Year, and Blues Music Award-winning songwriter, has combined her passions (teaching and music) to release a children’s CD. Yes, a G-rated,educational blues CD for the whole family to enjoy!Grandparents and parents will love this CD as much as the children. Blues In All Flavors includes 14 songs performed in a variety of blues styles (flavors)—Piedmont, Delta,Boogie-Woogie, Jump, Chicago Blues, New Orleans Blues, Doo-Wop and more. Adegbalola’s website includes guitar chords and interactive learning activities for every song. The CD’s 16-page insert booklet features not only lyrics, but also a learning activity to accompany each song. Some of the topics included in the CD are Self-Confidence,Health, Manners, Kindness, Responsibility, the Environment, Bullying and Compassion.I’ve been listening to the CD with my favorite 4-year old, Zada. She sings along and dances to songs like “The Sunshine Shake,” “Grandma & Grandpa’s House,” “Blues for theGreens,” “Please Please Please Please,” “The Cleanest Kid,” and “The Thank You Song.” Do something special for a child and yourself! Get Blues In All Flavors from Gaye’swebsite, CD Baby, or at children’s bookstores.SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER 2012 • www.NatchelBlues.org17
