Letter from the President/Capital Campaign update
Thanks to our community, Reflections, our annual gala, was a great success. Reflections celebrated
its 5th year with over 450 people in attendance who enjoyed the food, the amazing live auction, the
dancing, and the celebration! There were heartfelt speeches from our incredible honorees - Andy
and Audrey Franklin and Danny and Karli Sherwinter. Our community came together and raised over
$110,000 to support ongoing operations and programming that we all enjoy at the JCC. Where would
we be without this wonderfully vibrant and generous community?
As we continue to grow, we look forward to our move to the new facility. Because of our success in 2011, we are on track
to break ground in 2012. To those of you who have already made a commitment to our future, thank you. If you have not
yet joined us and would like more information, please contact me at susanrona@boulderjcc.org, or our executive director,
Jonathan Lev, at jonathan@boulderjcc.org.
Please stay updated on the progress of the building at www.boulderjccbuilding.org. You can also register to receive updates
and be advised when we are presenting to the City of Boulder. We would love to have our supporters out in big numbers for
those meetings. Thanks so much for being part of what makes Boulder so special.
Susan
Letter from the executive director
Greetings. As the Executive Director of the Boulder JCC, it is my great honor and pleasure to lead this
organization as we continue to grow our wonderful programming and enhance our ability to bring the Jewish
community together. Let me take a moment to celebrate with you many of our great accomplishments over
the past year. During the 2011, we:
• Hosted the largest Boulder Jewish fundraiser in a decade with over 575 people attending the Nov. 2nd Taste of the
Boulder JCC event.
• Established a formal Building Committee and a Design Advisory Group to work in conjunction with the architects on the
new facility and hired a Project Manager, Architects, and Construction Firm.
• Finalized design plans for the new Boulder JCC and selected architects, an owner’s representative, and contractors.
• Enhanced the reputation of the Boudler JCC in our community with several news articles published about us, a “go
to” booth at the Boulder Jewish Festival, and the implementation of new outreach programs that reached over 2500
participants.
• Launched summer and winter specialty day camp programs that reached over 115 campers.
• Enrolled 94 children in our preschool – the highest number ever.
• Built a Preschool garden that has become one of the preschool’s most popular programs.
• Began a planned giving and endowment program in conjunction with Rose Community Foundation’s Live On initiative.
• Continued our collaboration with Federation on programs including Kaleidoscope, Happy Hours and had the largest
attendance ever by Boulder women at the Choices event.
• Established the Boulder Jewish Teen Council of JTeen and opened a teen lounge.
• Upgraded our library system to enable a fully online searchable database.
• Won an award for our participation in the Crayons to Calculators program as “Community Partner – Honorable Mention.”
• Enhanced our multi-media department with the hire of a new Community Concierge and now have over 2300 views.
Visit us at www.youtube.com/boulderjcc.
I hope that you will join me and our amazing team of staff and volunteers in making 2012 an even bigger success. I look
forward to seeing you at the JCC soon.
Jewish Holidays
The months of March, April, and May are chock-full of
Jewish holidays. While some are most likely familiar
(Purim and Passover are examples) others might
be less well-known. The following information was
gleaned from Wikipedia, Jewish Literacy by Rabbi
Joseph Telushkin, and www.myjewishlearning.com.
Heard it all before? Take the quiz at the bottom on the
next page to see how much you really know!
Purim (March 7-8)
Purim, literally the Feast of Lots, is a joyous holiday that recounts the saving of the Jews of Persia from a potential massacre at
the hands of Haman, the Vizier to King Ahasuerus. The story is recorded in the Book Of Esther, (Megilat Esther) which is found
in the Writings section of the Old Testament. The holiday is traditionally celebrated by hearing a recitation of the megilla (story),
additional prayers being added to the Grace after the meal, giving gifts of food and drink (mishloach manot), giving gifts to
the poor (matanot l’evyonim) enjoying a celebratory meal (se’udah). Other customs include drinking wine, wearing masks and
costumes, and public celebration. In Walled Cities, people celebrate Purim on the 15th of Adar rather than the 14th. This later
celebration is called Shushan Purim.
Passover (April 6-14)
Passover (Pesach) is the holiday that commemorates the Exodus of the Jews from slavery in Egypt to freedom in the Land of
Israel. The name Passover comes from the legend that the Angel of Death “passed over” the houses of the Israelites during the 10
Plagues, saving the Jewish sons from death while the Egyptian first born males perished. Passover is one of the most observed
Jewish holidays in America today, with many Jews choosing to attend a Seder, eat matzah, and do a thorough spring cleaning to
rid one’s house of any chametz (leavened foods) for the duration of the holiday. Passover is one of the three Pilgrimage Holidays
(Shalosh Regalim) where, in ancient times, Jews would come to Jerusalem to offer sacrifices. Since the destruction of the Temple,
Passover has become a home-based holiday.
yom HaShoah (April 19)
The full name of this modern day holiday is Yom Ha’Shoah v’ha Gevurah (Holocaust Memorial Day and the Day of Remembering
Acts of Courage). At 11 am on the 27th of Nissan, a siren is sounded for 2 minutes and all citizens are asked to stop and stand
at attention. People driving will get out of their cars and stand beside them (even on the highway!) There wasn’t a specific act of
the Holocaust that took place on the 27th of Nissan that the holiday commemorates; however, the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising was
fought during this time.
yom HaZikaron, observed (April 25)
Yom HaZikaron is Israel’s Memorial Day. The observance begins the night before when at 8 pm, a siren blasts for one minute
and all citizens are asked to stand in silence, commemorate the fallen and show respect. A two-minute siren is heard at 11:00 the
following morning, which marks the opening of the official memorial ceremonies and private remembrance gatherings at each
cemetery where soldiers are buried. Many Israelis visit the resting places of loved ones throughout the day. The holiday ends with
the start of the next holiday on the list, Yom Ha’Atzmaut.
yom Ha’Atzmaut, observed (April 26)
Yom Ha’Atzmaut is Israeli Independence Day and commemorates the Declaration of Israeli Statehood on May 14, 1948. It
intentionally falls 24 hours after Yom HaZikaron so Israelis experience the sadness of remembering those lost in war to the joy of
becoming an autonomous people in the historic Land of Israel.
Lag B’omer (May 10)
Lag B’Omer falls on the 33rd day of the counting of the Omer, which begins on the second night of Passover. The time between
Passover and Shavuot is a time of semi-mourning, and traditional Jews do not celebrate weddings at this time and men will not
shave their beards until Lag B’Omer. While the origins of this holiday are somewhat unclear, many use it to commemorate Rabbi
Akiba, who was a supporter of the Bar Kochba revolt against the Romans. Today, it is celebrated by lighting a bonfire and playing
with bows and arrows in the great outdoors.
yom yerushalayim (May 20)
Yom Yerushalayim is an Israeli National Holiday that celebrates the reunification of Jerusalem. When the War of Independence
concluded in 1948, Israel had control over much of the city of Jerusalem, but the Old City, including the Kotel (Western Wall) was
controlled by the Jordanians. For 19 years, Israelis were not permitted to enter the Old City, but that changed after the Israeli
victory in the Six Day War. In 1967, the Chief Rabbinate of Israel declared Jerusalem Day a minor religious holiday to thank God
for victory in the Six-Day War and for answering the 2,000-year-old prayer of “Next Year in Jerusalem”.
Shavuot (May 26-28)
Shavuot (Weeks) celebrates the Jews receiving the Torah at Mount Sinai. The date of Shavuot is closely related to Passover,
since it marks the conclusion of the counting of the Omer, which begins on the second night of Passover. This counting of days
and weeks is understood to express anticipation and desire for the Giving of the Torah. It is customary to celebrate Shavuot by
staying up all night studying and Ashkenazic Jews celebrate by eating dairy products like blintzes and cheesecake. Traditionally,
Shavuot is celebrated in Israel for one day but in the Diaspora for two days.
Quiz
How many times is G-d’s name mentioned in the Book of Esther?
a) 0 b) 18 c) 100 d) 180
The word seder means
a) Story b) Order c) Plague d) Service
Had the Knesset (Israeli Parliament) not selected the 27th of Nissan to observe Yom Ha’Shoah, what other dates might
have been chosen?
a) T’sha B’Av (the date commemorating the destruction of the Temple)
b) The 10th of Tevet (the day the walls of the Temple were breeched)
c) None, new holidays shouldn’t be created
d) The 15th of Nissan (the first night of Passover)
Why are Yom HaZikaron and Yom Ha’Atzmaut listed as “observed” and not any other of the holidays on this list?
Which of the following is NOT one of the Shalosh Regalim (three pilgrimage holidays)?
a) Shavuot b) Passover c) Rosh HaShanah d) Sukkot
Which holiday is the newest addition to the Jewish calendar?
a)Yom Ha’Atzmaut b) Yom Yerushalayim c) Yom HaZikaron d) Lag B’Omer
True or False: Shavuot has no mitzvot (Torah-prescribed commandments) associated with it.
A B ALL OF THE ABOVE! Most interesting to the author is D. April 19, 1943 was the date the Warsaw Uprising
began, however, it was also the 15th of Nissan, the first night of Passover! Due to this fact, the Knesset decided against
observing Yom HaShoah on this date. Shabbat impacts the dates of the holiday! The holidays are always celebrated on the
4th and 5th of Iyar except for years in which the 5th of Iyar is Shabbat (like this year!) C B TRUE! Shavuot has many
customs, but no commandments that outline how the holiday should be observed.
“the rape of europa”
With talk back by Cu Art History
Professor Kira van Lil
This stunning 2006 documentary tells the
epic story of the systematic theft, deliberate
destruction, and miraculous survival of Europe’s
art treasures during the Third Reich and WWII. The
film takes the audience on a journey through seven
countries into a violent whirlwind of fanaticism,
greed, and warfare that threatened to wipe out the
artistic heritage of Europe. Joan Allen narrates this
breathtaking chronicle about the battle over the
very survival of centuries of western culture.
ART AND
CONSCIENCE
“Modigliani”
With talk back by Mizel Museum Curator
Georgina Kolber
Set in Paris in 1919 when the city’s bohemian
community was in full flower, this feature film stars
Andy Garcia as the Jewish Italian artist Amedeo
Modigliani. An honest portrait of the uniquely
gifted painter and sculptor, the film focuses on the
troubled artist’s last days, depicting his rivalry with
Pablo Picasso and his tragic romance with Jeanne
(Elsa Zylberstein), who was disowned by her
wealthy family for falling in love with a Jew.
Four Tuesday nights at 7 pm
Dairy center’s Boedecker Theater, 2590 Walnut St.
“Herb and dorothy”
With talk back by art collector david raddock
Herb and Dorothy Vogel redefine what it means to be an
art collector, as this 2008 documentary so astonishingly
attests. Herbert Vogel, the son of a Russian Jewish
garment worker, spent his life working as a clerk at the
post office. Dorothy Faye Hoffmann, the daughter of an
Orthodox stationary merchant, worked as a librarian.
Herb and Dorothy married in 1962 and in their cramped
one bedroom apartment amassed one of the world’s most
important collections of Minimalist and Conceptual art.
MARcH 27
“American Splendor”
With special pre-show talk at
6:30 by Kathryn Bernheimer
Jewish Comic Book Creators:
From Superman, Batman,
Spiderman, and X-Men to
R. Crumb’s underground comix
Paul Giamatti plays cult comic book creator Harvey Pekar
in this 2003 biographical comedy-drama about a morose
artist who shares the sad monotony of everyday life with
his fans. When he meets fellow neurotic Joyce Brabner
(Hope Davis), he finds his depressive soul mate. The
deadly funny film employs a combination of live-action film,
video, and animation, including narration and commentary
from the real-life Harvey Pekar.
“Movies about artists’ lives are usually deadly and
diminishing. This cubistic approach, blurring the line
between the man and his work, gives us the impression
we’re seeing the world from inside Pekar’s head. It’s
as if the filmmakers let themselves be invaded by their
subject’s quirky, cranky spirit.”
Champagne and Chagall:
Celebrating Hadassah’s Centennial
As thousands gather across the country to toast Hadassah’s
100th anniversary on March 22, Boulder celebrates with a
party that includes champagne and cake, and a screening of a
60-minute documentary about Marc Chagall, the legendary and
quintessentially Jewish artist. Chagall’s stained glass windows
at the Hadassah hospital in Jerusalem, created and donated
for Hadassah’s 50th anniversary, are among the artist’s most
beloved and well-known works. Hadassah is blessed with many
works of art which convey the message that soothing the soul
is as important as healing the body, and Chagall’s spiritual and
spirited works are testaments to that faith in the healing power of
art.
Join us for a Japanese dinner and a comedy about Israeli sumo wrestlers.
Hilarious and heart-warming, this brand new Israeli-hit comedy about
four overweight guys who learn to love themselves through the Japanese
sport of sumo wrestling is a “coming out” story with a twist. When Herzl
(Itzik Cohen) starts working in a Japanese restaurant, he discovers the
world of Sumo, where large people such as himself are honored and
appreciated. Through the restaurant owner, a former Japanese Sumo
coach, Herzl and his friends fall in love with a sport involving “two fatsos
in diapers and girly hairdos.” Utterly irresistible!
“Finding My Way:
An American Maverick in China”
With David Raddock
Looking back on more than 40 years of time spent in China,
David Raddock has written a memoir that is as much
about him as it is about China. The central message of
these recollections is that Americans see things in different
cultural ways: He gets caught up in several cross-cultural
misunderstandings, in his own disregard for the magical
secrecy that the Chinese invoke, and the utilization of
police and arrest. Along the way, the writer, professor, and
businessman becomes one of the first American scholars to
collect and write about vanguard art in China.
Teddy BearTea
and Concert
You are invited to a “beary” special party!
For families with children 2 ½ - 5 ½ years
You’re invited to a “beary” special tea party and a special Teddy Bear concert with Amy and Kelye of Musicare ® .
At the party, we’ll dance and sing along to lots of teddy bear songs. During our “tea-riffic” celebration, there will be
a visit by a big, dancing teddy bear, so you may want to bring your camera! We’ll finish by sipping herbal tea and
eating teddy bear treats.
Please bring your child’s favorite plastic tea cup (tea cups for adults provided). Also, if they have a favorite teddy
bear have them bring it along as well (if not we will have extra teddy bears available). The tea party will feel even
more special if
your children wear their “tea-party best”.
Sunday, March 11 | 4 - 5 pm
$14 per child BJcc or MM Members | $16 Guests
No cost for adults. Infants in carriers are welcome,
but please no siblings under 2 ½ years.
Space is limited, so buy your tickets early! If the event sells out,
tickets will not be sold at the door.
Helping adults and families for 20 years.
We look forward to springtime and awakening the garden! As we play outside, we
see so many signs of new growth (and lots of snow!). Not only is our natural world
budding, flowering and turning green, but our children are also growing. Their
expanding confidence in themselves opens the door for a whole new arena of
possibilities. We see things all around us that drive our interest in finding out more.
And through trial and error, we generate a whole new set of questions that continues
the flow of learning and all of the wonderful opportunities that go with it.
We are in the process of registering for summer camp and for the next school year (2012-13).
Please call the preschool office to schedule a tour, 303-448-9939 and you can check out the
Community Supported Agriculture
(CSA) program is now open!!!
Community Supported Agriculture is a unique
way to support small scale, sustainable
organic farms. When you buy a
CSA share, you effectively
buy a share in a local
farm. Farmers benefit by
receiving money early
in the growing season
to buy seeds and cover
expenses. You benefit later
in the growing season when
you reap the rewards of the
harvest including a weekly share of fresh picked organic
vegetables loaded with flavor and nutrition. Tuv Ha’Aretz
goes one step beyond the traditional CSA by giving Jewish
individuals and families the opportunity to join a unique
Jewish community and to further engage with the questions
related to the intersection of food, sustainability and Jewish
tradition through education and experience.
Passover
Dining
Halibut in a Velvet Lemon Sauce
1 large onion, thinly sliced
1/4 cup sugar
2 teaspoons sea salt
Pinch white pepper
1 1/2 to 2 pounds bone-in halibut, about 6 to 8 pieces
(salmon steaks may be substituted)
The Sauce
2 large eggs
5 tablespoons fresh lemon juice
2 teaspoons potato starch,
mixed to a cream with the minimum of water
In a lidded skillet, large enough to hold all the fish in 1 layer, bring 2
cups water, the onion, sugar, salt and pepper to the boil. (Adding
the sugar at this stage greatly improves the fish without noticeably
sweetening it.) Lower the heat while you prepare the fish.
Wash and salt the fish and put in the skillet. Bring the poaching liquid
back to the boil, then lower the heat so it is barely bubbling. Partly
cover and simmer very gently for 20 minutes.
Lift out the fish with a slotted spoon or fish slice, draining any liquid
back into the skillet. Place the fish in an oval serving dish about 1 ½
inches deep. Remove any skin but leave in the bone, then leave to
cool while you make the sauce.
To make the sauce, boil the remaining fish poaching liquid for 3
minutes to concentrate the flavor, then strain it and measure out 1
cupful. Beat the eggs thoroughly with a rotary whisk, then whisk in
the cup of fish liquid, the lemon juice and the potato starch cream.
Alternatively, mix all the sauce ingredients for 10 seconds in a food
processor or blender. This makes it easier to thicken the sauce
without fear of its curdling.
Put this liquid in a thick-bottom saucepan and cook gently over low
heat until the sauce thickens to the consistency of a coating custard
-- you will need to stir it constantly. Do not let it boil or the eggs may
curdle. To make the sauce in the microwave, cook the blended
ingredients, uncovered, in a jug or bowl on 50 percent power for
2 minutes; whisk well, then cook for a further 2 to 3 minutes, until
thickened.
Taste the sauce and add extra lemon juice, if necessary, to make
it equally sweet and sour. Pour the sauce over the fish, coating it
completely. Leave in the refrigerator overnight, covered with aluminum
foil. This classic Passover dish needs to be refrigerated at least 24
hours and up to 4 days before serving. Serves 6 to 8.
Macaroon Crusted orange tart
For the coconut tart shell:
3 1/3 cups unsweetened shredded coconut
3 large egg whites
1 1/2 cups kosher confectioners’ sugar*
3/4 teaspoon vanilla extract
For the orange filling:
4 large egg yolks
1 (14-ounce) can sweetened condensed milk
1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
1 teaspoon orange oil or extract
1/2 cup orange juice
2 oranges, zested
Tart Shell: Preheat oven to 375 degrees F. In a medium
bowl, mix the 3 1/3 cups coconut, egg whites, confectioners’
sugar, and vanilla together. Lightly press this macaroon
mixture against the sides and bottom of a buttered 9-inch tart
pan to form the walls of the tart.
Bake the shell until the bottom crust is tanned and the sides
are golden brown, about 10 minutes. Let cool on a rack.
Lower oven temperature to 325 degrees F.
Orange Filling: While the shell is cooling, in a medium bowl,
mix the yolks, sweetened condensed milk, extract, oil, orange
juice, and zest together. Pour the filling into the cooled shell
and bake until just set, about 15 minutes. Set on a rack to
cool, then refrigerate until chilled.
* Kosher confectioner’s Sugar
To make Kosher for Passover confectioner’s sugar, replace
1/2 Tbsp. from 1 cup of sugar with 1/2 Tbsp. potato starch
and process until very fine.
Science Matters in Colorado offers an exciting and educational program
for children five through twelve years of age at the Boulder JCC!
Investigate the wonders of the ocean and marine biology while examining different types of ocean
life—like sharks and squid- and experimenting with blubber and kelp! Students will explore the
layering of water and salinity, the types of living things that thrive in the world’s oceans, and learn
about sonar and submarines. We’ll even investigate the evidence that Colorado was once covered by
a HUGE ocean, and you’ll uncover the clues why this was true! We get to look inside/outside a shark in
this 4 day WONDER CAMP. We’ll be swimming deep into the wild wonders of the deep blue seas!
