A spectacular cover, with interestingcontents: “one of the most notorious rogues in Europe, Civigni of Cefalonia, ran off withone of the Russian maids of honour and a portion of the Empress’ jewels”. Plate 135 TE, barely touched at lower-right, goodto large margins other sides, tied by “131” in diamond of bars cancellation, on reverse,Clara (23 June), Portarlington (23 June) and blue Belfast (24 June) datestamps, fine. Theonly recorded use of this Late Fee marking used solely as a cancellation on cover £12,000-15,000Note: Many Postmasters operated a Late Fee system of 1d. or 6d. extra (their perquisite), if aletter were posted after the closure of the normal mail39
