Heather Ball, the head <strong>of</strong> the Art and <strong>Architecture</strong> Library forVirg<strong>in</strong>ia Tech, was elected to the executive committee <strong>of</strong> theIAWA’s Board <strong>of</strong> Advisors and appo<strong>in</strong>ted IAWA Secretary. DonnaDunay and Marcia Feuerste<strong>in</strong> were re-elected to the Board <strong>of</strong>Advisors. Pr<strong>of</strong>essor Dunay will cont<strong>in</strong>ue to lead the MilkaBliznakov Prize committee and Pr<strong>of</strong>essor Feuerste<strong>in</strong> was reelectedto cont<strong>in</strong>ue as Chair <strong>of</strong> the Board <strong>of</strong> Advisors.Barbara Nadel, FAIA, was elected as an <strong>of</strong>f-campus Advisor onBoard. Ms. Nadel, an architect <strong>in</strong> Forest Hills, New York, isthe editor and author <strong>of</strong> the award w<strong>in</strong>n<strong>in</strong>g book Build<strong>in</strong>g SecurityHandbook for Architectural Plann<strong>in</strong>g and Design, for which shereceived a commendation from the Milka Bliznakov Prize. Nadelbr<strong>in</strong>gs to us her extensive experience as an author andpractitioner <strong>in</strong> the greater New York City area. A past president<strong>of</strong> the AIA New York City Chapter, she is perfectly situated toidentify women who practiced <strong>in</strong> the New York metropolitanarea and beyond. She is vibrant spokesperson throughout thearchitectural community who will give voice to the IAWAthroughout the country. Off-campus advisor Gerrianne Schaad,Archivist <strong>of</strong> the University <strong>of</strong> Texas at San Antonio, was alsore-elected to another term on the Board <strong>of</strong> Advisors. Pr<strong>of</strong>essorSchaad has been <strong>in</strong>strumental <strong>in</strong> the development <strong>of</strong> the IAWAcollection development policy, which is still under review.Desp<strong>in</strong>a Stratigakos, who retired from the Board this year, waselected Honorary Advisor to the IAWA. Dr. Stratigakos, teachesat Harvard University and specializes <strong>in</strong> modern Europeanarchitecture and urban plann<strong>in</strong>g, women architects anddesigners <strong>in</strong> Europe and the United States, and theories <strong>of</strong>gender and design. She will cont<strong>in</strong>ue to be active on the MilkaBliznakov Prize committee. Mitzi Vernon, on-campus advisorand secretary, retired from the Board <strong>in</strong> order to return to herresearch. We also recognize Jennifer Meehan, past IAWAArchivist. In addition to her careful archival knowledge andexperience, she developed a number <strong>of</strong> grants to preserve andma<strong>in</strong>ta<strong>in</strong> the IAWA collection. These will be used as a templatefor future fund<strong>in</strong>g applications.Ute Weström at 14th Annual UIFA <strong>in</strong> Toulouse, FranceRecent applicants for both stages <strong>of</strong> the Milka Bliznakov Prizerevealed a number <strong>of</strong> significant proposals for the annual MilkaBliznakov prize. While a prize was not awarded this year, twoprojects warranted special consideration and were awardedcommendations by the jury: Dorita Hannah from Well<strong>in</strong>gton,New Zealand (un-hous<strong>in</strong>g performance: The Heart <strong>of</strong> PQ, “anexhibition/event on the Senses <strong>in</strong> Performance,” constructedat the Prague Quadrennial (PQ)) and Janet Stoyel from Sheldon,United K<strong>in</strong>gdom (Sonicloth c. , a new product and design).These are announced elsewhere <strong>in</strong> this Newsletter.As an <strong>in</strong>ternational archive dedicated to preserv<strong>in</strong>g the physicalrecord <strong>of</strong> women’s <strong>in</strong>volvement <strong>in</strong> and contributions toarchitecture and related design fields, we thank you for yourcont<strong>in</strong>ued support <strong>of</strong> the IAWA mission, collection, andprograms. The only such archive <strong>in</strong> the world, the IAWA hasplayed a crucial role <strong>in</strong> collect<strong>in</strong>g work that would otherwise belost. The archive collects materials from the modern andcontemporary periods, with an emphasis on the first generation<strong>of</strong> female practitioners (before WWII). As the collections haveexpanded, the archive has also become an important researchand study center on gender and women <strong>in</strong> architecture. Feuerste<strong>in</strong>, Chair, IAWA Board <strong>of</strong> AdvisorsNews <strong>of</strong> Our AdvisorsSolange d’ Herbez de la Tour, dist<strong>in</strong>guished member <strong>of</strong> theIAWA Board <strong>of</strong> Advisors, has been recognized by the Frenchgovernment. On April 5, 2005 she was awarded the prestigioustitle Commander de la Legion d’ Honneur for her unique serviceto France and to the world. Solange founded the <strong>International</strong>Union <strong>of</strong> <strong>Women</strong> Architects <strong>in</strong> 1963; the organization has amembership represent<strong>in</strong>g over 80 countries. She also organizedthe fourteen congresses <strong>of</strong> this organization, each gather<strong>in</strong>gconcurrent with an <strong>in</strong>ternational exhibition <strong>of</strong> recent works bywomen architects from around the world. These congressestook place <strong>in</strong> Paris, France (1963, 1978, 1983), Monte Carlo,Monaco (1969), Bucharest, Romania (1972), Ramsar, Iran(1976), Seattle, Wash<strong>in</strong>gton and Wash<strong>in</strong>gton, D.C. (1979,1988), Berl<strong>in</strong>, Germany (1976, 1981, 1984), Copenhagen,Denmark (1991), Capetown, South Africa (1993), Budapest,Hungary (1996), Tokyo, Japan (1998), Vienna, Austria (2001),and Toulouse, France (2004). Each congress addressed aspecific issue such as “Participation <strong>in</strong> the Shap<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> NewTowns,” “The Humanization <strong>of</strong> Urban Space,” “Hous<strong>in</strong>g and theEnvironment <strong>of</strong> Children,” and “Reconstruction and Rehabilitation<strong>of</strong> the National Architectural Heritage.” Many participat<strong>in</strong>gwomen, <strong>in</strong> the exhibitions for these congresses, have donatedtheir exhibit panels to the IAWA or have sent some <strong>of</strong> their workfor <strong>in</strong>clusion <strong>in</strong> the <strong>Archive</strong>. All UIFA Congresses have createda friendly, stimulat<strong>in</strong>g and highly <strong>in</strong>formative atmosphere. Theyhave augmented the global vision <strong>of</strong> the pr<strong>of</strong>ession, promoted<strong>in</strong>ternational understand<strong>in</strong>g and cooperation, and consolidatedpermanent friendships.
