Research is underway toquantify the effects of different cropping systems andtillage practices on carbon sequestration.<strong>Building</strong> soil organic matterThe first step in effective management of soil organicmatter is to determine your management goals (Figure6). Do you want to build the amount of soil organicmatter quickly? Do you want to supply nutrients in thefirst year of amendment application? Or is your maingoal to improve the structure of the soil, graduallyover time?Choose those practices that are most effective inpromoting the goal(s) you have in mind <strong>for</strong> your soil.<strong>Building</strong> and maintaining soil organic matter requires asustained ef<strong>for</strong>t. But it can be done.<strong>Building</strong> soil organic matter <strong>with</strong> covercrops and green manuresCover crops are those crops planted after the main(cash) crop is harvested. Some cover crops are seededover the standing cash crop so they can get a headstart on growth while the cash crop is still in the field.Cover crops are usually killed the following spring,prior to planting the next season’s cash crop.Planting cover crops or green manures build soilorganic matter in several ways. Both protect the topsoilcompletely and greatly decrease soil erosion by reducingraindrop impact.
