Seven governmentDelta 2 launches occurred in 2004; eight areplanned for 2005.Delta 4 – The Boeing CompanyThe Delta 4 family of launch vehicles has a commonbooster core first stage that uses the first new largeliquid rocket engine developed in the United Statessince the Space Shuttle Main Engine (SSME) wasdeveloped in the 1970s. This engine, the RocketdyneRS-68, is based on the J-2 engine used on the secondstage of the Saturn 5 launch vehicleand technology from the SSME.However, the RS-68 is larger andsimpler than the SSME. Dependingon customer needs, two or foursolid-fuel strap-on boosters, twotypes of upper stages, and threepayload fairings can supplement theRS-68 engine. This vehicle will belaunched from VAFB and CCAFS.The first Delta 4 launch took place Delta 4 launchon November 20, 2002, successfullylofting the Eutelsat W5 spacecraft from CCAFS. 7Federal Aviation Administration/Office of Commercial Space Transportation 9
