Spaceports2005 U.S. Commercial Space Transportation Developments and ConceptsCape Canaveral Spaceportand Missile Center. The Eastern Space and MissileCenter became part of Air Force Space Commandin October 1990 when the Air Force transferredspace and launch responsibilities from Air ForceSystems Command to Air Force Space Command.Today, CCAFS encompasses six active launchcomplexes for Delta, Atlas, Titan, and soundingrocket launch vehicles. Plans are currently in workto deactivate two of those launch complexes (LC 40for Titan 4 and LC 36 for Atlas 2/3) in 2005.Cape Canaveral SpaceportThe Cape Canaveral Spaceport is geographicallycomprised of the USAF CCAFS and NASA KSC inFlorida.The 45th Space Wing, headquartered at nearbyPatrick AFB, conducts launch operations andprovides range support for military, civil, and commerciallaunches. The 45th Space Wing is the hostorganization for Patrick AFB, CCAFS, Antigua AirStation, Ascension Auxiliary Air Field, and manymission partners. The Wing is part of Air ForceSpace Command at Peterson AFB, Colorado, andreports to the 14th Air Force at VAFB.The Wing manages the Eastern Range, provideslaunch and tracking facilities, safety procedures andtest data to a wide variety of users. It also manageslaunch operations for DoD space programs. Usersinclude the USAF, Navy, NASA, and various privateindustry contractors.The Eastern Range is used to gather and processdata on a variety of East Coast launches and deliverit to range users. To accomplish this task, the rangeconsists of a series of tracking stations located atCCAFS, Antigua Air Station, and Ascension AuxiliaryAir Field. The range also uses the Jonathan Dickinsonand the Malabar Tracking Annexes on the Floridamainland. These stations may be augmented with afleet of advanced range instrumentation aircraft aswell as a site located in Argentia, Newfoundland.Major events at the Eastern Range in 2004 includedthe 50th launch of a GPS satellite, and the lastAtlas launch from LC 36A on August 31. Runwayimprovements at CCAFS are continuing with a $4.5million renovation. In June, the 8th Annual CapeCanaveral Spaceport Symposium was held to discussrecent developments and the future of commercialspace transportation.Edwards Air Force BaseWith its mission partners, the Wing processesa variety of satellites and launches them on Atlas,Delta, and Titan ELVs. The Wing also provides supportfor the Space Shuttle program and U.S. Navysubmarine ballistic missile testing.The 45th Space Wing was established Nov.12, 1991. Its origins date back to 1950 with theArmy and Air Force’s establishment of the JointLong Range Proving Ground. A year later, the AirForce assumed full control of the new facility, designatingit the Air Force Missile Test Center. In1964, it was renamed the Air Force Eastern TestRange, and in 1979 it became the Eastern SpaceEdwards Air Force BaseLocated in California, EAFB is the home of morethan 250 first flights and about 290 world records.It was the original landing site for the SpaceShuttle. The first two Shuttle flights landed onRogers Dry Lake, a natural hard-pack riverbed40 Federal Aviation Administration/Office of Commercial Space Transportation
