Since then it has trainedthousands of people in traditional and non-traditionalcourses, in response to community demand.DEVELOPING ENTREPRENEURIAL SKILLSBUSINESS MANAGEMENT SKILLS TRAININGThis 4-day course is an integral part of the vocational trainingprogramme. The objective is to guide participants interested instarting and managing small scale business.WOMEN AT THE THRESHOLDThe Vocational TrainingProgramme offers rural women theopportunity to develop andstrengthen their skills. The idea is toprovide women with themanagerial and productive skills tobegin or enhance a home-basedbusiness. The most popular courses


amongst women are : embroidery, dress designing, tailoring, tieand dye, beverage making, and jam, jelly and juice making.A RAY OF LIGHT FOR PERSONS WITH DISABILITIESPersons with disabilities are often denied the opportunity todevelop their capacities to build abetter future. As they have thesame right as others to earn adecent living , the vocationaltrainingprogramme offersspecially-designed trainingcourses for men and women.These include basic and advancetailoring, beautician, basic andadvance computer, householdappliances repair, mobile phone repairing, paper mache,fabric painting, book binding, tube light chock making, motorwinding, graphic designing, fan dimmer making and glasspainting, amongst others.GAINFUL EMPLOYMENTAfter graduating from the training courses many people servean apprenticeship to gain experience. They then either starttheir own business or find employment as skilled labour. Somegraduates of the vocational training programme have foundemployment outside Pakistan.<strong>NRSP</strong>'s micro-credit programme complements the trainingprogrammes by providing start up funds for enterprisedevelopment.VOCATIONAL TRAINING PORTFOLIOThe portfolio of the Vocational Training Programme consists ofaround 100 training courses developed in response to needsidentified by community organizations. SELECTION CRITERIAThe Social Organizer (SO) informs the Community Organization(CO) members of the available courses. The prospective traineethen identifies his or her need for a particular skill training in theCO meeting. The CO determines the applicant's need. If it isgenuine, and if the SO considers the applicant to be eligible anddeserving, a resolution is passed on to the SO in favour of theapplicant. The applicant is then nominated for the training.<strong>NRSP</strong> enters into an agreement, called Terms of Partnership(ToP), with each CO. The ToP identifies the responsibilities whichboth <strong>NRSP</strong> and the community members must undertake. TheCO is responsible for selecting the appropriate candidate andensuring that he or she will effectively utilize the skills learnedafter the training. <strong>NRSP</strong> identifies the appropriate public orprivate sector training institutes and assists the institutes indesigning appropriate training modules. <strong>NRSP</strong> also arranges theboarding and lodging of the trainees. The ToP also includes anagreement that a certain portion of the tuition fee will be borneby the CO.PARTNERS IN TRAININGThe training courses are conducted in collaboration withgovernment, non-government institutes and agencies. Thegovernment institutes house excellent resources in terms ofbuildings, hostels, resource centers and trained teaching staff.The private sector does not have the same scale and level ofresources.This collaboration has a dual purpose: First is to provide highqualitytraining to rural men and women and second is tomake use of the available government resources whichpreviously were under utilized. <strong>NRSP</strong> has collaborated with thefollowing training institutes:• Apprenticeship Training Centre, Government of Pakistan,Islamabad• Islamabad Tailoring College• National Institute of Science and Technical Education,Government of Pakistan, Islamabad• Federal Institute of Technology Al-Hamd Institute• Iqra Centre for Technical Education (International IslamicUniversity)• SOS - Technical Training Institute, RawalpindiThe Vocational Training Programme also extends support toother RSPs and to development agencies which enhance themarketable skills of their community members.


<strong>IRM</strong> PROFILE• The <strong>NRSP</strong> - Institute of Rural Management, established in 1993, is one ofPakistan's leading training institutes in the non-profit sector. Its mandate isto reduce poverty through skill enhancement and capacity buildinginitiatives.TRAINING PROGRAMMES OFFERED• The Community Training Programme works to enhance the capacity ofcommunity organization members in managerial, technical andvocational skills. The main components of CTP are the CommunityManagement Training Programme, Social Sector Services TrainingProgramme, Environment and Natural Resource Management TrainingProgramme, Vocational Training Programme, and EnterpriseDevelopment Programme.• The Staff Training Programme aims to enhance the knowledge, skills andattitudes of the staff of other RSPs, government departments,national and international organizations. The main components of STPare the Internship Training Programme, Management DevelopmentProgramme, and Micro Finance Training Programme.• The Professional Development Programme implemented in partnershipwith the Rural Support Programmes Network, aims to enhance theprofessional competencies of senior and mid-level managers bydeveloping a needs-based curriculum for training courses that upgradeacademic, technical and managerial skills.• The Women's Leadership Programme enables women professionals toimprove and develop their leadership and management skills. Thisunique programme consists of five 2-week sessions over one year. Thesessions are complemented with 'distance learning' and mentoring.• The Academics Programme offers Post Graduate Diplomas in HumanResource Management and NGO Leadership and Management. It alsooffers Executive Diploma in English Language Proficiency. These diplomasare designed for professionals from government, corporate sector andcivil society organizations.PROFESSIONAL SERVICES AND SUPPORT• The Advocacy, Communication and Networking section aims to providesupport to the activities of <strong>IRM</strong> through its reports, brochures, newsletters,case studies, leaflets, and documentaries. ACN has proved to beinstrumental in enhancing the involvement of government and civilsociety organizations in participatory development by generatingopportunities to learn and share new approaches, technologies andinformation.• The Akhter Hameed Khan Resource Center was set up to honor thecontributions of this renowned scholar and activist to social mobilizationand participatory development. The AHKRC serves as a repository ofknowledge, both contemporary and historical. One significant point offocus is the archives of the RSPs' field experiences and Akhter HameedKhan. (www.ahkrc.net.pk)• The Teachers’ Resource Up-gradation Center was established in 2005 todesign and deliver training to primary school teachers. The objective is tomake them effective facilitators in the classroom.
