Wedo not escape our self-chosen destiny. I would not say this ifI had not tried again and again to train myself to say “Yes”to my karmic opponent. You yourself have prescribed theopposition to yourself, just as a doctor prescribes a bittertastingmedicine so that you can become well. If we succeedin working together within polarities, something comesinto being. Rudolf Steiner drew our attention to it. One canhardly describe what arises then of new forces. The archetypalexample is Goethe and Schiller. They could not stand eachother. All of the habits of Schiller, who, for instance, made useof the smell of rotting apples to stimulate his creative work,were unendurable to Goethe. Schiller’s excessive drinkingof coffee was something Goethe could not stand. The twonevertheless found a basis for working together. They havealready set us an example.We have only one alternative. Either we manage it thistime or the next time it will only be worse, I can assure youof that. That is the alternative. That is why we must reallytry, as well as we can, to form the basis for a positive solutionwith our colleagues now, for we will encounter each otheragain and the unresolved karma will build up. It cannotbecome easier, it can only become harder. This is connectedwith the fact that we live in a century that is an exception.Rudolf Steiner actually said that the twentieth century cannotbe compared with any other century in history which isaccessible to our perception. This means that no century existsin Kali Yuga — that is, from 3000 bc to 2000 ad, which canbe compared to the revolutionary character of this century.It has an extraordinary place. There are three mysteries58
working in this century: the mystery of Christ, the mysteryof the Anti-Christ, and the mystery of Michael. Today, we aredealing with these three mysteries. Wherever human beingswant to form communities, wherever they want to serve ahigher goal, we encounter Christian influences. Whereverlight and clarity of thought are formed, where thoughts ofthe heart come into being, we are dealing with the Michaelicmystery. And wherever there is inhumanity, and a lack ofhuman dignity occurs, we are dealing with the mystery of theAnti-Christ. These three forces are active today throughouthumanity; we stand in this field of battle. We cannot besurprised if we encounter difficulties among ourselves, for weare children of our age and have an inner connection with allthese forces.Now, I spoke to you about the exceptional characterof this century. This is the last thing I would like to add tothat. On September 8, 1919, and once again on September15, in Berlin, Rudolf Steiner unveiled the mysterybehind the founding of the school to the members of theAnthroposophical Society. He said that today, the spiritualworld is no longer interested in the human being. Why? Theimage of man has been completely worked out and is finished,the entire picture of the human being. Today — these aremy words — the human being must become interesting tothe spiritual world; he can become this only by being activespiritually. Only then will the spiritual world help. We muststretch out our arms, the arms of our striving for knowledge;we must become active and begin to work with the spiritualworld. We spoke of it yesterday when we discussed how theteacher seeks an inner connection to the beings of the thirdhierarchy. That is the reason. People sense this today.
