of teachers, I shall then add the external aspect — a task isestablished. We create something ahead of its time in theforming of a body of teachers, something which mankind willhave to attain in the future, a new form of group, no longerbound by blood ties — we have spoken of that — but by ourcommon aims.Dear friends, the past separates us; we come from verydifferent corners of the world, from very different parts ofthe world, but the future unites us, and this is the conditionfor establishing a body of teachers: We who form the body ofteachers make the school our common concern. This is theaim to which we want to dedicate all our energies. The futureunites us; the past divides us in many cases. I would like toadd an anecdote. There were some personalities in Dornachwho had great difficulties with each other. When RudolfSteiner was asked about this, he said: “Well, if you knew therelationship that existed between them in the past, in a formerincarnation, you wouldn’t be surprised if they now attackedeach other with weapons.” Dear friends, I am relating nothingto you but what I have acquired through my study of spiritualscience and what I have observed in my social experiences. What has been described is a goal, an ideal, a distant goal. And it is important that all of this live in the consciousnessof each one here, even when he returns to his own group ofteachers, where the reality looks very different. The tensionbetween the goal in thought (Zielgedanke) and the externalreality is something that modern man must endure; that ishis test in life. But thoughts are realities, feelings are realities.Children sense immediately what kind of feelings the teacherhas for the Child. Grown-ups, too, have a very fine sense forthe disposition of another person. If you carry these thoughtsand bring them to life within you, they become realities.64
What we think today, we will be tomorrow — an occult truthexpressed by Rudolf Steiner. What we think today, we willbe tomorrow. Naturally, it does not mean twenty-four hoursfrom now; it refers to the future. We prepare the future in thatwe inwardly call it up within us; the future lives in us.One last thought. In 500 bc, Buddha formulated theeightfold path. We must tread the sixfold path, otherwise wewill not be able to function in a social sense, we will not beable to function in a group; nor will we be ready for peace, orcapable of peace. The control of thinking, the control of will, the control of feeling, a positive attitude, open-mindedness,equanimity, inner calm, inner balance ... it is formulated indifferent ways. The way I presented it now is found in How toKnow Higher Worlds.Yesterday, I related how the College of Teachers (interneKonferenz) came into being. Although it isn’t handled like thiseverywhere today, it is in most cases. One who joins a schoolmight not be a member of the College of Teachers for a while;it is a time of mutual testing. After a time, there will be aconversation for the purpose of mutual orientation, and thenthe question is posed whether the new colleague is preparedto commit himself to this school with all the inner ego forcehe can muster, whether he wants to work in it responsiblywith the others. Then he becomes a member of the College ofTeachers. As a rule, the meditations for teachers are handedout at this time — not earlier — unless there be a specific, justifiable reason. Usually then, if the person in questionwishes it — this must be done in freedom — the two teachermeditations, of which we have not yet spoken, are given tothe teacher. Perhaps the Imagination at the beginning ofThe Study of Man, of which we have spoken, is read aloud, either personally to the new teacher or in the meeting.
