Ontario <strong>in</strong>dustry utilizes 100% transplants for plant<strong>in</strong>g. There are close to 40 acres ofgreenhouses used for transplants produc<strong>in</strong>g approximately 200 million tomatoseedl<strong>in</strong>gs for Ontario and U.S. growers.The seedl<strong>in</strong>gs are normally transplanted <strong>in</strong> early May, as soon as the risk of nightfrost has disappeared. About 90/95 days are needed between transplant<strong>in</strong>g andharvest for early varieties and 110/125 days for late varieties. Approximately 50% ofthe surface is irrigated. Generally spr<strong>in</strong>g and summer ra<strong>in</strong>s are sufficient to coverwater needs, however, drought conditions <strong>in</strong> some years has resulted <strong>in</strong> a strongfocus on drip irrigation with significant grower <strong>in</strong>vestment be<strong>in</strong>g made over. Harvesttakes place between early August and mid-October, and is fully mechanized.There are 8 tomato <strong>process<strong>in</strong>g</strong> facilities <strong>in</strong> the prov<strong>in</strong>ce, the largest three H.J. He<strong>in</strong>zCompany of <strong>Canada</strong> Ltd., CanGro Foods Inc. (formerly Kraft <strong>Canada</strong> Inc.) and Sun-Brite Cann<strong>in</strong>g Ltd. process approximately 85 % of the total volume. The distribution ofthe tomato production is usually as follows:o 70% of tomatoes are made <strong>in</strong>to tomato paste, manufactured dur<strong>in</strong>g harvestseason and reprocessed <strong>in</strong>ternally to manufacture ketchup, soups andsauces.o 20% made <strong>in</strong>to whole peeled tomatoes.o 10% made <strong>in</strong>to juice from fresh tomatoes.OPVG & OF&VPAWith<strong>in</strong> the WPTC, <strong>Canada</strong> is represented by both the Ontario Process<strong>in</strong>g VegetableGrowers (OPVG) and the Ontario Fruit & Vegetable Processors Association(OF&VPA).The Ontario Process<strong>in</strong>g Vegetable Growers is a producer organization established <strong>in</strong>1944 to barga<strong>in</strong> collectively for prices and terms and conditions of sale with Ontarioprocessors for 12 <strong>process<strong>in</strong>g</strong> crops, of which tomatoes are the largest. Eachproducer contracts directly with his own processor for quantities required, varieties tobe grown and plant<strong>in</strong>g schedules to be utilised. The board funds and co-ord<strong>in</strong>atesresearch relat<strong>in</strong>g to <strong>process<strong>in</strong>g</strong> vegetable production. In 1998 the Ontario Process<strong>in</strong>gVegetable Growers and the Ontario Food Processors Association jo<strong>in</strong>ed together toform the Ontario <strong>Tomato</strong> Research Institute which funds research relat<strong>in</strong>g to allaspects of <strong>process<strong>in</strong>g</strong> tomatoes. They also jo<strong>in</strong>tly organise the Ontario Process<strong>in</strong>gVegetable Industry Conference each January.
