Rabbit SnaresRabbit snares can be made out of 4, 6 or 8 strand brass wire with and an eyelet.Click to Enlarge. The wire is twisted tightly around the eyelet, then cutoff to about 16" to 18" long. The cut end should be passed through (If it has got one),the large facet of the eyelet. Now, depending on what type of support you are going to use, either a metal tealer orthe old fashioned split hazel, leave the cut end as it is, or twist a straightforward eye inthe end.Eyelets, brass wire or complete rigs, can be bought HERE or HERE or HEREThese are only suggested sites. I have no financial connection with any of them, so ifyou know of any more, let me know.Metal TealerAt one time, there was a copious supply of metal coat hangers, but as these seem tohave disappeared, try to get some 2mm or 2.5 mm galvanised wire from either anagricultural merchant or hardware store. Cut a piece approx 18" long and make spiralof about 3 turns in one end, with hole of about 2mm. If you are going to make a lot, ajig would be easier. Two headless 2mm nails are knocked into some timber, the shortone, should be about the same thickness of your wire, the gap between them also thesame thickness. Put one end of the wire between the nails with about 1/4" protruding, then wrap tightly around the longer one for about 3 turns, pull off the long nail andtidy up the short end with some long nosed pliers. Then 10" from the spiral, bend thewire back on itself, so that approx 3" from the bend there is a 1" gap, then at thispoint, bend back towards the main stem so it is at a right angle to it. Now tightly wrapthe remaining end around the stem. Now thread the cut end of the snare through thetop of the tealer and tie a knot. Fasten some cord to the triangular part of the tealer andto a good stout peg.Click thumbnails to enlarge

Hazel TealerJig Tealer Shape Tealer with snareA hazel tealer is simple. Cut an approx 1' length of straight hazel , about 1/2" thick, sharpen at one end and make a 2"split with a sharp knife at the other. Set the noose toabout 7" to 8" wide and 5" to 6" high, then just behind the eyelet, jam the snare wireinto the split and push stick into ground. Fasten the other snare loop to a stout peg bysome non-slip cord.Noose heightWhichever tealer you are using, when setting the snare, ensure that the loop is about7" to 8" wide and 5" to 6" high and about 5" to 6" off the ground, so that the noosecover the maximum width of the track.
