Year by the Connecticut Art Education Association (CAEA)<br />

SHS Chorale teacher Dr. Stuart Younse named Secondary Music Teacher<br />

SHS Science teacher Keirsten Huttig earns <strong>2007</strong>-08 Siemens Award for<br />

Advanced Placement.<br />

SHS Social Studies teacher Liz McKay recognized by the American<br />

Psychological Association (APA) for her outstanding paper,<br />

“Psychological Sense <strong>of</strong> School Membership Mediates the Relationship<br />

Between Attachment and Academic Motivation in High School Students”<br />

HJMS Vice Principal Patty-Lou Peters named by the <strong>Simsbury</strong> Board <strong>of</strong><br />

Education as Educator <strong>of</strong> the Year.<br />

Tariffville Grade 5 teacher Terry Henault became one <strong>of</strong> the fi nalists for<br />

CAS Elementary Exemplary Educator <strong>of</strong> the Year.<br />

Three SHS students, Brandt Smallwood, Alex Makkaveyev, and Kevin<br />

Su qualifi ed for the American Invitational Mathematics Exam (AIME).<br />

Brandt Smallwood was elected as State Vice President <strong>of</strong> Future Business<br />

Leaders <strong>of</strong> America (FBLA).<br />

At Berklee Jazz Festival Swati Pullela received a Judges Choice for her<br />

performance in the ensemble and an Outstanding Jazz Soloist Award<br />

overall; P J Duffy received a Judges Choice Award for his performance<br />

in the High School Big Band and an Outstanding Musicianship<br />

Award overall.<br />

SHS student Divya Bajekal named <strong>2008</strong> Governors Scholar<br />

SHS student Richard Saunders named <strong>2008</strong> Presidential Scholar<br />

SHS senior Cody Hughes received a National Silver Scholastic Art<br />

Award for his mixed media sculpture.<br />

Administrative Services<br />

The Director <strong>of</strong> Administrative Services recommends management<br />

policy to the First Selectman and to the Personnel Sub-Committee.<br />

Under the direction <strong>of</strong> the First Selectman, who serves as the <strong>Town</strong>’s<br />

Personnel Director, the Director <strong>of</strong> Administrative Services administers<br />

and evaluates the staffi ng program for approximately 146 full time<br />

and up to 50 regular part time employees. In addition, the Director<br />

<strong>of</strong> Administrative Services provides management support to the<br />

Departments & Services<br />

First Selectman and Board <strong>of</strong> Selectmen in the administration <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>Town</strong> operations.<br />

Animal Control Officer<br />

Animal Control is a function <strong>of</strong> the Police Department that provides a<br />

response to all animal related needs. The Animal Control Offi cer provides<br />

service for domestic and farm animals and is licensed and certifi ed by the<br />

Department <strong>of</strong> Environmental Protection for nuisance wildlife control.<br />

Accomplishments <strong>of</strong> <strong>2007</strong> – <strong>2008</strong><br />

Public Health and Safety<br />

Pet owner compliance for rabies vaccinations and dog licensing through<br />

the <strong>Annual</strong> Dog License Survey.<br />

Public Awareness and Education<br />

Educational programs with community groups – <strong>Simsbury</strong> Rotary Club,<br />

McLean Home, Citizens’ Police Academy, <strong>Simsbury</strong> Public Schools and<br />

daycare facilities.<br />

Awareness through media sources such as television, newspapers and the<br />

website with the addition <strong>of</strong> streaming video.<br />

Service Development<br />

Hosted a regional Bear Awareness and Response Seminar for police and<br />

animal control <strong>of</strong>fi cers, conducted by a former member <strong>of</strong> the Canadian<br />

Fish and Wildlife.<br />

Emergency Preparedness Operations Planning.<br />

Increased level <strong>of</strong> service for injured animals through immediate<br />

emergency care and fi rst aid.<br />

Expanded knowledge base for equestrian needs through the Connecticut<br />

Department <strong>of</strong> Agriculture and the Connecticut Horse Council.<br />

Goals for <strong>2008</strong> – 2009<br />

Host the <strong>Annual</strong> Rabies Vaccination Clinic in conjunction with canine<br />

education and adoption event.<br />

Expand educational programs for students and parents <strong>of</strong> the <strong>Simsbury</strong><br />

public and private schools, school bus drivers and school crossing guards.<br />

Continue education and awareness efforts through the media outlets.<br />

Enhance knowledge and service delivery through continued animal<br />

related training and education seminars.<br />

Expand our available resources to respond to community needs.<br />
